You basically lit a fuse when you tried to spark up that tube. The gas was accumulating in the battery, then in the printed tube and then in the needle, when you lit the needle it set off a chain reaction with the gas in the printed part and the battery. Had you put in a flame arrestor and a longer piece of tube you might have got a better result, but still not advisable, because of any back pressure issues, where was your bubbler to stop the gas returning into the tube. Very dangerous what you did glad you were ok, but just one other thing if that was sulphuric acid in the cells not a good idea.

The question is though, how efficient is this? I asked that because I saw another design which is practically the same thing, but you need different materials inside the battery to be able to make it as efficient as this paper states.

Sorry but even for education purposes building something like this is not wise.
Why didn't you go through a flash trap? Run your gas through a water trap. That way you won't have the explosion blowing your manifold apart.
