    This is literally the very best self-build off grid minimal house that I have ever seen and I have seen them all - I have watched pretty much all of them on youtube over the past couple of years! This build is truly inspirational! My best friend has designed a yacht which I am going to help him build, it's going to be fully self sufficiant so it's wonderful to draw inspiration from builds like this. Superb work Kris! I see an earlier comment about a cat, yes a cat will keep away any mice for sure, as soon as a cat is introduced into the home the smell of the cat alone will ward off mice.

    A definition of 'off the grid':
    "Off-the-grid is a system and lifestyle designed to help people function without the support of remote infrastructure, such as an electrical grid. In electricity, off-grid can be stand-alone power system or mini-grids typically to provide a smaller community with electricity.
    Off-grid electrification is an approach to access electricity used in countries and areas with little access to electricity, due to scattered or distant population. The term off-the-grid (OTG) can refer to living in a self-sufficient manner without reliance on one or more public utilities. People who adopt this lifestyle are called off-gridders.
    Off-the-grid homes are autonomous; they do not rely on municipal water supply, sewer, natural gas, electrical power grid, or similar utility services. A true off-grid house is able to operate completely independently of all traditional public utility services."
    He is producing his own energy, not from the city or any other public means; enough to have internet, he is still off the grid. 'Off the grid' just refers to how you produce your energy which doesn't come from the regular grid cities, towns or other will have; has nothing to do with living in-communicated or like a caveman without internet.

      Two things that might hey people who want to live off grid but sty should perfer a lemonade amount of electricity. the old days they would live next to a water source and or a good sized Brook there by harnessing the power of the water. I know you all about solar panels which I think is another great idea. And then last but not least wind generated power, i. E. The windmill
      Just some ideas slow out and around. Open helps in God bless!! !!

    So many people don't understand the concept of off grid living.

      If I have a fresh water source or a well I can get off the water grid. If I have a fireplace and candles, or even a generator, I can get off the electric grid. These things are replaceable by other means. There is no way to pick web berries off an internet bush and grow my own Google. Internet access is ABSOLUTELY to be considered “on the grid”

Plus it would make the logs stand out again like when you were building it. Maybe you like the natural look better but linseed oil is pretty natural :)

It’s been a long standing dream of mine to have my own land, also in Wales (born and bred), and build my own home. My partner and I are making plans to do just that. We’ll be building a tiny house using the straw bale technique and living off the land as much as possible. A lot of what I’ve seen in your videos has shown what we could do and how easy it could be done. So thank you very much for doing these videos. I may just move on to your Hydro power and trees now. 😍

I think it may just overwhelm their sense of smell, but last year I was having issues with field mice getting into my house and a friend suggested the mint. I put in four plants - one each in different rooms and have not seen one since. Hope it helps.

    Burning the wood before building would of given the wood a permanent seal. There are wood structures 1000's of years old in China that are still as sturdy and strong as the first day they were made. Charkle the wood before building next time.

    It's really amazing what you can accomplish by living simple and alternative and off grid! I can't believe you can achieve having EVERYTHING a normal house would have in your simple off grid house. Maybe in time you can have more people join you living in the same area as the simple off grid house. And have a shop at simple off grid house. And paved roads at your simple off grid house. And have your jobs in the vicinity of your simple off grid house. And schools and hospitals and a city hall at your simple off grid house. And have public transportation at your simple off grid house. And THEN you can REALLY show off how advanced your simple off grid house is.

    Ha WHEN volunteers come , Kris think ja going to need a few more than that single jug lol , over the period of time watching this bloom into its own backdrop. It's not for all this style of living but really it's how we all should live , it's only takes a little planning and sourcing info and help from all out there . Land is the task to find with natural resources, it's out there just go look . Each journey starts with an idea , Kris well done on what you've achieved so far . Overall what's the plans further down the line ? I think from memory your wish this to be a wealth of knowledge for others to master?

    Hey Kris, have you thought about getting into bee keeping? You could brew your own mead with the honey you get from them. Or just sell the honey at a local market for some extra cash.

    • @KrisHarbour
      @KrisHarbour  6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      yes i have, i just have so many things planned i think old man kris will be messing with bees. young kris has to build things.

    • @MrPaulviles
      @MrPaulviles 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kris, firstly love what you are doing! LOVED the hydro system build! Makes me want to go buy a block just with a stream to build one, hard to get in sunny Qld Australia!
      The bee idea should be a young kris thing! I got into bees only 18 months ago and there is such good money in them and really not much labour. Plus I just made my own honey mead and wow! Simple and great!
      You need to start young on bees so you can build your hives up cheap and not have to buy them. Buy 2-3 and then just split them off and make free new hives as they grow.
      Either way great work! An great work by your girlfriend too! She seems like a worker!

      But I hear they are all dying. sad

    • @MrPaulviles
      @MrPaulviles 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      mexcan fun a lot of bees are getting killed by poisons used to protect crops from other insects, yes. Do we need to work hard to repair the damage getting caused, yes we do. In Japan they have killed off such a high percentage of their bee population that little men with special paint brushes go around orchards in flowering season to spread pollen..........
      I wouldn't say we are in threat of total bee die off though. Nations like Australia have very strong bee populations and are exporting millions of hives a year. We also are the only continent that doesn't have the bee diseases that other continents do.

    • @MrPaulviles
      @MrPaulviles 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patriot thanks for that thought. My Bee's are fine though since I am in Australia and here disease is very limited, poisons on crops are very heavily regulated to protect Bee's, humans and also the great barrier reef.
      My statement was more a generalisation of how farming practices and disease spread is having very negative but I don't believe catastrophic impact on Bee's internationally.

    Instaed of burning wood in the wood stove try having giant paper bales delivered from the recycling center at about $1 each and simply make paper bricks for burning in winter they are incredibly long lasting and a better alternative than cutting down trees for fire wood. Also paper bales can also be cobbed an are a cheaper alternative to straw bales. This method however usually consists of a Crete method of cobbing and does use more of a concrete mixture rather than a cob mixture.

    Cool house. These type of houses would be way better and would cause less pollution and usage of resources. But yeah 95% of the world uses the world as a slave and there is not really anything that we can do about it. The government also doesn't really support this stuff. In the Netherlands it would be quite impossible to get a building permit for this kind of thing.
