    Hi there. I realize this video is two years old, but I just found it. I went to college at HSU starting in 89. I want to thank you for documenting so much of the town in this video. Even though I haven’t lived there in years it always felt like my true home and I still believe I left part of my soul there when I left. I can’t and Incan believe how much it still looks the same and I’m so happy to see that so many shops I patronized back then are still in operation (at least two years ago). I took a film class at HSU and it was basically going to that old theater each week to watch a movie and then writing a paper about it. I rode my bike from Arcata through the bottoms and then I to Mckinleyville to work at a pizza place there. This video is what my soul needed tonight. I’m hoping to start a more nomadic life in the next year now that my kids are grown and going home to Arcata is definitely on my list of places to go. Thanks again for doing such an amazing job on this video. Peace☮️✌️

      You are welcome. This video was a labor of love. It was the first video I made after finally learning to edit a video. Arcata is that place you dream about after you leave. I can tell you, it still has that energy. I don't know what it is, but it feels so good. We were here at the same time. I came in 88! It was sooo hippie! And people think hippies just lived in the 60s. Were you a "Humboldt Honey"? Remember? Thanks for your comment and I hope you get to come back some day.

    I love the history. When i younger i couldn't stand history. But as i got older more like in my 30s i really enjoy history now well i am older than 30's lol. I love a town with history or a beautiful old house with a story. Awww beaches are beautiful and so calm and can be wild like Santa Monica Beach. I lived in Ventura by the beach and i would just walk on the sand and it felt good on my bare feet 😄 even though i did live there i hardly went to the beach only because i worked a lot and get off very tired. But it was nice there till i moved. Some day i will visit but not any time soon.

    Julia, great job editing! I, too, will be 51 in March, never married, no children. Your experiences, both positive and challenging, have made you into the deep, thoughtful, intelligent, caring person you are today. I believe we OG single women have so much to offer, bc we had to develop skills that a married woman with kids did not necessarily have to develop. Being with yourself can force you to grow roots deeper, and find what you truly believe, without the distraction of caring for a family. You must become self-sufficient, protect yourself, and solve problems on your own. Although a good marriage and offspring can a beautiful experience, not everyone will have that. We must grow where we are planted! Peace, blessings, and much respect!🌿

    Howzit Julia! Great video about Arcata. It was more conservative when I was there. I remember logging was big and there was a paper mill in Eureka that smelled bad. Have you ever gone up Fickle Hill Rd to a place called Top of the World? Great place to hang out. I lived at 1390 I st in a frat called Tau Kappa Epsilon. The freeway was not finished yet. So many memories. Going to Walts Friendly Tavern in Blue Lake with fake ids.
    They had the best live music. I could go on but that's enough for now. Have great day in the Redwoods 😀🤙

    • @thegroovypatriot
      @thegroovypatriot  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh I understand that logging was huge still, but about to be severely challenged in the 80s by the hippies and environmentalists (because we were cutting everything and about to go for the national forest lands too). Pacific Lumber was eventually bought out by a TX oil company I believe. They increased cutting by 300%. They took what they wanted and the lumber industry basically died as a major economy of this area. Luckily, the hippies had already developed Cannabis which took off and saved the area's economy.

    • @thegroovypatriot
      @thegroovypatriot  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The mill was still running in the 80s and was disgusting, spewing dioxin in the air and chlorine in the water. We would all get sick from it and called the yellow phlegm the "Humboldt Crud". When I returned to see that smoke stack no longer running, I thought, NOW this place is perfect. Unfortunately woke is now destroying everything good the hippies made up here.

      Hi! Well, I've decided I need a small RV or bus in order to really sew. A stand up van won't work. I just won't be able to earn enough that way with constantly getting water, emptying toilet, fuel, cleaning up fur. I spend almost every day doing these errands, then trying to sew at night in the freezing cold. It's not working. Much Love.

    I love this video, what a truly beautiful place. So excited for you and your bus! Having the extra room is live changing. Beginning of this year i sold my van and got a mini Toyota rv and even though finding parking has been a bit harder in SoCal, I have done more art projects in one month living in it than I did in a whole year in my van. Having the space to spread out and stand up anywhere is the best for healing physically and mentally. As much as I miss my stealthy van sometimes, the mental clarity I’ve had with more space has been the best and what I want to do wouldn’t be possible even in a larger sprinter type van. Really happy for you finding your home in Arcadia, it seems like the perfect place and definitely shows our hope is not lost!

    • @Alicealexandra4
      @Alicealexandra4 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lindac7146 they only made them from 87-92 so there aren’t too many around. I got lucky looking for anything under 22ft that I could afford. I found it on offer up. Apparently toyota rvs have a huge following kinda like VW, there’s Facebook pages where you can maybe find a good deal on one! And yes they are Toyota, they come in different styles like mine is the seabreeze, there’s dolphin, odyssey and sun radar seem to be the most common ones.

    May 18, 2024. Been following you, love your videos. But this, this so touched my heart as i used to live in Sonoma county, 1974- 1978, and had been to Arcata. I read Ecotopia there. The world's a friggin shit show and I really don’t think there is much time left. If Arcata is still like it was when you recorded this, what a great place it would be to ride out the storm in. This video is so well done.Thank You. ✌️💥👍🙋‍♂️

      Thank you! It took a LOT of hours to make, and was a labor of Love to Arcata and Humboldt. It is a good place to ride out the storm. But I gotta say, the weather is starting to really bother me and I'm itching for a trip!

      My heart still pines for being a Part Ranger I admit! And I also love Eureka, in a different way. Didn't like it so much when the pulp mill was here. Remember we used to get the Humboldt Crud" every year from that mill? Eureka always got the bad rap next to Arcata. But I love Eureka's old buildings and especially the waterfront. Even the old industrial stuff, so cool. Eureka has done a lot to re- integrate their wetlands with the tidal flow - awesome. There's a sticker everyone's sporting around here now..." I Like Eureka". ❤️

    So glad this just showed up in my 'recommended'. As someone who was born in Mad River Hospital and has lived in Arcata all of my 43 years, this was amazing. Not a lot of folks really 'get' what's going on here, so when I find someone who obviously does, but also can paint the picture so eloquently, I just have to tip my hat n say: 'Thank You'.

    • @thegroovypatriot

      Thanks so much! A lot of it was really based on how I remembered it from the 80s. I've found even though things have changed, as I said in the video, these roots run deep. It's truly amazing here. And to you as a born and bred local, I tip my hat to you as well!

    I thought I recognized the thumbnail as this is where I live lol it's neat to see it through another's minds' eye...just throwing it out there: my dad could use a friend like you lol but seriously. He's got dreads like you, a huge heart, and loves his dogs like yourself. You have great energy...we call people that aren't technically from here, but who fit right in(and sometimes end up staying) "fromboldt". It's cool that you used to live in Dr. Dick's place("in town"). This place is kinda like a vortex. It always seems to call ya back if ya leave so I've heard. Great video, and welcome back home 💜

    • @thegroovypatriot
      @thegroovypatriot  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Fromboldt"!! Now to be fair, I AM from NorCal! Sonoma County mostly, the Russian River which is like a miniature, less dramatic, less fresh version of here!! Anyway, from the moment I came back ( and wanted to for years) it felt like Home, seriously.
      Now back in the day one of my roommates in that house was a gal who sang and played drums, and she was blind by the way, one time asking me, " But really, what is Fuschia like?"! She had left and lived in SF for 10 years...and came back! I have no idea if she's still here or even what her name was. Oh, about your dad...does he like vans?

    • @Sil3ntsongbird
      @Sil3ntsongbird 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thegroovypatriot right on! I was starting to watch more of your videos last night, but hadn't yet discovered where you originally came from. Aww I wonder if your old roommate is still around...that would be cool to reconnect with her. I appreciate your poetic descriptions... I'll bet you described fuscia quite well to her. My dad has done a little bit of van and motorhome life here and there in the past...he moved back here to the mountains from the Chicago area back in the 80's when he found out that we had land out here... it's beautiful and all, but now that I'm grown my dad is alone... well with his dogs alone. It's better when you have someone to share life with ya know. Anyways I think he would enjoy van life as he's talked about doing something like that... he's not very technological, but can garden like the OG he is... he's always trying to tell me to help him find a good woman as he can't figure out how to do dating sites, emails etc(and is out in the coastal mountains)...he said "your in town..put a cardboard sign on your balcony that says my dad needs a date w my phone number" lol I haven't done that yet, but stumbled upon your video and was instantly drawn to your heart/energy/spirit...Anywho, ya never know...I appreciate you and what you do. It's pretty admirable and fun to watch so thank you✨💜

      @@Sil3ntsongbird FusCia! God, I can never get that one right, and I pride myself on spelling. Does your dad like spelling? Just kidding. Ya, I think it's really hard to meet people these days, and if you're older, like your dad and I, it's even more difficult. I would say it all happens naturally, energetically when you're ready. But since you are bringing it up now, that's energetically happening too. Can you email me at the address below? That's be grand.
