    I own 2 Bromptons and like them and ride them a lot. I just stumbled across this youtube channel.
    This guy talks a lot of sense. He's no troll and doesn't seem at all to be in the game of just gratuitously dissing Bromptons.
    Good on you, mate!

    I have full on beater 25 year old bromton. In the winter I go to work sometimes in salt covered snow and ice roads. In the summer I folded the bike and yeet it over fallen trees.

    just take the thing apart and replace the gunked up grease. good as new. As for aluminum fatigue, really? Where is the data to support the claim that the handlebar can break after 5000 miles? sounds like marketing by Brompton to sell parts.

      @@TheCheapBikeChannel i am actually wondering on buying a decathlon folding bike. However, I live in an area with irregular pavement (and cobblestones!), and I heard/read some customers complaining that the tilt 500 e would open in half due to such solicitations. Do you have any insight on this? It looks like a good deal, despite the fact of not having any suspension. As a background, I need a folding bike as i live in an old house with lots of stairs and little storage place. For these reasons, I place Folding and comfort riding at the same level. thanks in advance and congratulations for this channel.

      @@FrancescoNavarrini Thank you for your comment Francesco. I can see the closing mechanism for the centre of the Tilt 500 frame is cheap plastic, which will wear away easily, so I can understand how the frame then opens when going over bumps. I would not advise taking such risks with the most valuable thing you own - your health - just to save a some money. My advice: buy a proper adult-sized non-foldable bike, with two good locks, and lock it outside the house to an immovable object. The Abus Granit X Plus is a very good U-lock (€80), and my Btwin Rockrider 520 still works pretty well after years of use. Best wishes!

      @@TheCheapBikeChannel thanks very much, very helpful. Let me just say that the centre, where I live, is the only bumpy place where I would ride, but being also where I have to end my rides, it will have to be something to take into account. BTTs use to be hard on my back, though: do you have any other suggestion for a hybrid bike? Sorry to take advantage from your availability. Thanks again for a very useful channel.

    Fatigue is bullshit for the bikes.I have 25 years old m2 Brompton,rust everywhere, still solid.
    And Brompton fans love to pay older Bromptons.I have seen broken handlebars and frames from 4,5,6years old bromptons it depends on how you use and how you fold this bike.
    For that mentality don't buy any Antique bike,car..etc.
    Yes we all believe metal and alloy fatigue but we are not buying 2nd hand airplane.

    Torn between a Brompton or Decathlon Tilt 500. Have you tried both? I think you already have Brompton but wonder what you think of the decathlon version. Great to see a Belgian based TH-camr. Keep up the useful videos.

      Hi Hugo - I've seen the Tilt's for sale second-hand very cheap and in nearly new condition - around 120 - 150 euros, which indicates people aren't that happy with them and want to get rid! =) The frame looks really flimsy on them in my opinion. I haven't tried it myself though... perhaps you should go to Decathlon and have a test ride, and let us know how you find it? Thanks for the positive feedback too - indeed there aren't too many second-hand Belgian bike vloggers =)

    • @TheCheapBikeChannel
      @TheCheapBikeChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi - you're right that the price of second-hand Bromptons seem high! Typically I see the second-hand price at 70% of the price of a new one. So between €700-900. If you can't find one at the low end of this price range, you may be better off buying a new one and reselling when you're finished with it.

    I just think the people that give you advice on how to look after your bike don’t really have clue,
    All they want is more money out your parket you don’t have to replace handle bars after 5000. Miles or your crank shaft or pedals you just need to clean them and your stem put plenty of degreasing agent on them and look after your wheels breaks tires and do this every 2 to 3 weeks and and any small parts need replaced you can do that big things take to shop ,,shops have bronze silver and gold services it’s worth investing in one of them.

    I took my one year old Brompton to the bike shop for maintenance. They charged me for $200. Basically they said Brompton recommend users replace the chain, sprocket... every year. That's crazy. I don't even pay that kind of money for my car maintenance.

    • @TheCheapBikeChannel
      @TheCheapBikeChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gulp! You can check whether a chain is worn by using a "chain checking tool". And for the sprocket - the teeth should look like mountains - if they look like ocean waves, then it's time to change it. Though for both of these, you would have noticed the chain slipping when you push down on the pedals.

      to be fair, it is a smaller bike so it will get a lot more wear-and-tear with lots of use; a larger bike will spread out the wear-and-tear over a longer chain and larger wheels; but that said, I do wish it were cheaper overall or at least a carbon-fibre frame for that price

      if you can still find specific parts (such as the middle clasp) to it, then it probably is okay (i'm not sure if the new ones and old ones are the same); other parts you may get generic replacements (like chains, seat posts, etc). you may have to factor in spending another few hundred euros to replace various parts, but if it has been kept well, it probably is about the market price - decent bikes do seem to keep their price reasonably well, and the price should reflect the maintenance and replacements done to it
