- Will Finn has definitely animated a movie from your childhood.
Joining the industry in 1979, despite being told that Animation was dead. He sweated his way up the ranks, being taught by the last remnants of the Nine Old Men. Nobody knew where the industry was going but having put in the work through the difficult period, he was ready to sink his teeth into great characters during the renaissance, like Cogsworth or Iago.
Getting to talk to Will is such an amazing treat for me, he’s such a deep treasure trove of insider information across many studios and he’s kind enough to share all that throughout this podcast. Styling himself similar to Grandpa Simpson, recounting his tales. True to form, Will surprised me when he wanted to talk about not just one, but two Disney features of the 60’s: Sword in the Stone and The Jungle Book.

That like Pinocchio is his own villain is similar to a line one of the Nine old men wrote in a Disney villain book. They said that the true villain of Dumbo was his own ears.
I love that, it’s reframing the idea that sometimes you can be your own worst enemy depending on how you choose to live

It’s crazy how varied the stories of Walt Disney were with his films. Once you got to the 90s it was the same thing over & over. Beating a dead horse and trying to live up to a craft that wasn’t ever going to come back. Also the target audience for American animation is just younger and younger each year, with adults flocking to films that aren’t remotely made for them.

I grew up with Disney 90' movies but I need to be honest today they're pretty much overrated all that because of nostalgia. The stories always followed the same pattern. They were like the same stories but set in different places.
Even the art style was nearly the same while a lot of movies before the 70' had they're own style (Snow White with its watercolor backgrounds, Bambi's environment inspired Chinese painting, The 101 Dalmatians inspired by fashion sketches, The Aristocats scenes like they're coming from a sketchbook, Sleeping Beauty and its gothic style, and even more). They all used different techniques. And to be honest from an animation perspective the 90' movies don't look that good. They were the leaders of animation all that to have the same look of flat stickers moving on a painting. At that time I think that for example Ghibli movies looked way better.
Anyways the renaissance era imo has still some qualities. They used the computer for the first time (well...), but above all they showed tales from other cultures and that's really good ! The musics were great too. Well they were okay movies.
I fully agree with him that Walt is both overpraised and overhated. He clearly wasn´t as wholesome and pure as the Company potrays him and did some undoubtebly shitty Things but he wasn´t the Devil.
Totally agree, he was a product of his time, human and also truly a storytelling genius. His story sensibilities are second to none
