What an episode it is. I'm hugely humbled to be joined with one of the greatest living animators, James Baxter. You might know him as a horse on a ball making people happy, but James has been working in the industry for over 30 years, starting on Who Framed Roger Rabbit? He's responsible for some of the most beautifully animated moments in animation history, including Belle and the Beast dancing in the ball room, or Quasimodo carrying Esmeralda up to the top of Notre Dame. The list of his phenomenal work goes on.
Today we're talking about Bambi, well as much Bambi as we can apart from me picking his brain about his process. Bambi was the 5th feature film released by Walt Disney Animation, and it's legacy speaks for itself. Really, with Bambi, the Disney studio's leapt so far ahead from other animation competitors, and cemented itself as a powerhouse when it comes to Animation. The film's tough and rigorous development process laid down a foundation that has forever changed the animation landscape.

Thanks for the great interview with James Baxter! Just a point of correction: James said Don Degradi was brought into Disney as a teacher. Don Degradi was a Disney production designer and writer at Disney in the 40s. I believe James is referring to Donald Graham, who was a drawing instructor at Chouinard art School (which much later became Cal Arts). As head of the Disney training program, he taught drawing and action analysis and was a key figure in helping the animators develop the principles of character animation which became the foundation of the art form.

I remember being mesmerized by the behind the scenes of Bambi after the end credits when watching it on vhs
the flour sack deer in Snow White, the live deer studies, the multi-plane camera, etc.

I only knew James Baxter as an awesome horse in Adventure Time. Glad I know he's an amazing animator as well now. Also Bambi is incredible

The shot with grown up Faline, wondering where Bambi went, I always notice that both that shot and when she's trapped by dogs, her eyes changed color. 😅

great video bud. I was wondering if i could get some help. I'm in my third year of engineering and i'm kinda fed up with it and i'm thinking about doing a degree in animation but i'm a nervous doing something like that. You wouldn't know if there is a lot of job opportunities in animation in Ireland or even abroad. I'm just worried that i'd go into animation and the struggle to find any work.

Bambi has some incredible animation, but some of it is pretty bad. For example, when all the bucks are prancing around for the Great Prince, there are shots where they devolve into brown smudges.

I think he was confusing the names Don Graham and Don DaGradi.
Hey everyone so I have seen a lot of horror stories on youtube regarding a career as a professional artist. I'm am sure the experiences are diverse across the board. However strict deadlines, bosses you don't understand, and projects that you receive minimal credit for can be infuriating and have a lasting negative effect on your mental health and smash the love of art. With that being said Im currently doing personal research on how to improve the personal lives of professional artists which is why I'm hoping you guys can participate by answering two quick questions that I have.
1. What state of mind are you unable to create with?
2. How does a failure to create something you're happy with, affect you personally?
