He is only 18 Thou... he is still learning thou... its the publishers fault thou... his photos are not that bad thou... your photos are dull thou... your jealous thou... your criticism wasn't constructive thou... Don't judge a photographers skill by their age. there are many under18s who are fantastic photographers - brooklyn is not one of them. He hasn't learnt much - so really shouldn't be charging people for a published book of his "WORK" David and victoria also had a hand in the selection process and publication. his photos are not bad, they are terrible my photos are in focus and have a subject. criticism ≠ jealousy I don't need to be constructive. his book is already constructed.
Good job on this "photography review"? Anyway i think its well done. Also I feel the sudden real urge for someone to roast my photos too. Id really like that haha...
Sorry Dom, I wholeheartedly disagree with what you are saying, of course people are jealous because we have this mindset in the current age of instant gratification and when we see something like this it pushes our buttons, our envy clicks in to gear, we all have it but why can't we flip that.... and be positive towards people and their actions... What Brooklyn and to an extent his family have done is built personal brands, if you build a personal brand, the world is your oyster, Brooklyn has put a lot of hours and time into building a social following... is his photo work good?? No... but thats not the point here... its about influence... Brooklyn has influence and a following (market).... Burberry didn't ask him to shoot for them because he was an amazing photographer, its because their brand would go out to millions of his followers putting Burberry on the tip of the tongue of millions of kids (a new market)... Thats business. The biggest thing we can build in life is leverage and thats exactly what the Beckhams have done, they have a huge amount of leverage... and ultimately the market will decide how much that leverage is worth... He has brought out a book of subjectively what you perceive as "shit" photos, is he wrong for doing that? Should he not do it because his work is not up to par, hell no... if anyone was in the same position they would jump at it... but as I say ultimately its the market that will decide and the sales will decide if it was a worthwhile exercise for Brooklyn, the personal brand he has built and following suggest it will be great business and a great decision... Don't worry about what Brooklyn is up to, he is doing just fine, whether you think his photos are "shit" or not and he has as much right as anyone else who owns a camera to release a book :) My 2 pence worth.
I think it's recorded at an angel by a camera outside of the computer. Could have been screen recorded but he was straight to the point and you could still see the photos so 🤷🏻♀️
You have hit the nail on the head, yes anyone could take them photos but you know what Brooklyn has that we should all strive to have? Leverage and influence... thats the key in the equation, not the images :)
Perhaps that is exactly why many people (and Burberry) likes him. To top it off, he is famous with famous parents. Most normies don't enjoy "good" photography, They see it too difficult and artsy. No matter what anybody says, Brooklyn is just the kind of stuff that the vast majority of young consumers like.
Wtf .... photography is art and the fact is not “everyone” can take it. This video pisses me off, why do you feel the need to post a video criticising another persons work? This video is rude and you obviously don’t appreciate photography and different peoples style. Like are you jealous? his work may just be a hobby. Fuck off
Steve Irwin's kid was lucky to be surrounded by loads of talented photographers and cinematographers, and he clearly worked to learn those skills and develop an eye. I'm jealous of that opportunity, but don't begrudge a single thing, as he's not accepting, let alone expecting, undeserved praise. That is not the case with Beckham. Beckham's parents should have gotten Mr. Miyagi to teach him the craft before giving him a Leica and a book contract. Burberry was certainly just leveraging one brand in support of another -- fine, but they don't deserve any respect for it.
The problem is not bad photography. The photos are fine like. They nice enough everyday pictures. The problem is that they are published world wide in a book and he’s what, 18? His career has barely started and he has achieved what people work for for their whole life.
Although he achieved absolutely nothing! He got derided worldwide for taking crap pictures by everyone, probably had to finance his publishing and promotion. That kind of negative exposure (pun not intended) is not really what you want as a teenager.
It isn't a problem at all. It just says that if you're well connected and have money, you can do whatever you want. Remember that Paris Hilton toured as a DJ and released a record. Sasha Grey published two novels, but for this photographer and those 2 women there's barely any talent at all in their creations. The problem is with the people that consumes that type of pop culture, because of the hype and wanting to be part of the trends. Luckily all those endeavours are short lived since it isn't their passion. Compare that to Shakespeare, that although he's dead, his books are still selling.
I agree with this video 100%. This kid got lucky because of his name. It's sad when there are many far more talented photographers out there who should be published. I see far more interesting photos shared on Instagram. His pictures are nothing more than random boring snapshots and as you pointed out Dom, there's no context to them whatsoever. It doesn't even look like he's learnt the basics either and I would wouldn't be surprised if the majority of his pictures are shot in auto - someone who has his type of privilege should be learning from someone with experience and looking for a mentor, he has access to the top, world class photographers and making something of himself!. What an insult to aspiring photographers Utter pish. .
I know nothing about photography. What I can tell from this is, SevenIrwin’s son has an eye. He has an eye for amazing shots and he’s damn lucky. The other guy THINKS he has an eye, but he’s really just a hipster. His pictures SEEM like they’re supposed to evoke a feeling, but they don’t because he doesn’t know what he’s doing
Not going to lie, I didn’t think they were completely bad until you showed the photos by Tommy Gak-Ken Wan. The difference was remarkable. Tommy’s work was in another league and really highlighted how meaningless and bland Beckham’s images are.
I actually looked through the book in a bookshop and the pics you showed are fantastic compared to some of the images you didn't show. The other pics should have been deleted by the publisher - they're the worst I've ever seen!
Logic Police you could call a movie terrible without ever having made one Not everyone who criticizes is a hater, even if they’re on their couch. It’s an opinion, a widely accepted one at that.
Logic Police I am a photo student in college. I have made galleries and photo projects for my school. I know how hard it is to make a photo project and this book was garbage. There is a huge lack of technique and nothing unique going on. I could go into specifics but you probably wouldn’t understand so I’ll leave it at that.
looks like he is just trying to learn. the only mistake is some book publisher saw an opportunity to make money from his fame. Who else didn't have photo's like that when they first started?
yes. when they first started... not when they were doing fashion shoots for major companies and doing book signings. anyway here is what mine was like when i first started www.blurb.com/b/2215491-getting-there-with-photography
Maybe I'm crazy but I don't think he's that committed to learning even for someone his age, e.g. he would have looked for another school close to his home in the UK after dropping out of homesickness, or supplemented his internships with workshops or even participated in local competitions (they make names anonymous for fair judging at least in our area), my friend participates to see others' works and to see her own capabilities even though she doesn't win, another friend made his own low budget lighting setup just for shoots in his tiny bedroom at around the same age, when there's a will there's a way. But BB's not improving that much. This video was made 2 years ago and there are reports just a few months ago that he lacks even basic skills....
Brooklyn has rly no excuse to publish boring af photos he's lived an incredibly unique and interesting life which he should've been able to have some decent photos from. The fact he's published the blandest selection of photos shows pretty much how he has no understanding of basic photography, this isn't down to taste just the fact he's a shit photographer.
ann to me cole sprouse is way better than him. He did quite a few photoshoots for magazines even at the time that he’s not that famous as now. (Before riverdale) I don’t think his love to photography has to do with his name or such. I think he just that kinda guy that always love to carry his camera all the time and genuinely loves photography.
Nepotism is bad 100% of the time. Because its anti-meritocratic. But if you HAVE that level of opportunity, you shouldn't squander it. In fact if you happen to have nepotism on your side, i feel like you owe it to society to hold yourself to a higher standard, or at the very least use your connections to help forward the career of someone who's earned it more than you
One thing I’ll critique about this video is that photography doesn’t always have to have a message or a story. It’s not a poem, it’s not even always like a painting. Sometimes it’s about putting a feeling into a frame or a mood. A lot of the photos that were called good in the video looked like stock photos taken by a fancy camera and honestly bland
Most "good" photography is good because it has purpose, it was carefully set up, whether that be the subject or the composition or the angle or whatever. And then the edits match the feeling of the photo. They are thought through, even if captured seemingly spontaneously. But Brooklyn's photos look like he whipped out his camera and took the photo in 1 second without thinking or aligning anything. They seem random and lazy. That's why they're considered "bad". He needs to take an intro to art class or something and learn about the principles of design.
I dont get the point of bitching young Beckham... if he wants to be a photograph let the dude experiment and be whatever the fuck he wants to be.... All this negative bullshit is Art's Cancer...
He won't stop taking photos ... as I didn't stop writing movie scripts when all my teachers found them boring, irrelevant, to pretentious, and déjà-vu. What if we set aside our doubts about fine art, to be as care-free as a child painting a page with delight. Coz , Kids dont worry themselves about the Criticism, they just throw paint at the page just to see what the colours do.
Enabling a celebrity hack to surpass real photographers is the real cancer. Why would you support such a bad photographer over the rest? Why are you arguing in favor of lowering standards for celebrities who least need the help? Shouldn't you be supporting someone with talent or someone who needs the help?
Brooklyn is talent-less. he is not even trying and just riding off the Beckham name. i saw the book its just a bunch of photos that anyone could take. I am so glad you mention Steve Irwin, Robert. He is out there making a name for himself and building on his family name NOT riding on it.
a lot of times to understand a pic, one should be educated in shadows, angles, composition, density etc. BUT....90% of viewers are..NOT. So the element of surprise, interest, selectivity, pic-portation comes in play and THATS what people are attracted to. I see sooooooo many PRO photographers with NO EXPOSURE AND NO INTEREST because people simply DONT UNDERSTAND and DONT CARE about technicality! HAVE FUN!
No, no, no! That is NOT the point. You have spectacularly missed the point. The whole point of a good photograph is that the untrained eye will pick it up. There will be something about it that you will automatically be attracted to it.
Exactly :) Agree with your language! But Bob Bought Billion Begapixels Brand New Canon and went to get schooled on how to get pics the "right" way.. now Bob wants to show technicality, professionally done apertures and focus! But Bob Brings Boring Bloody pics online. I guess we both agree on simplicity but nothing simpler than simplicity.
Im essentialy a noob and doesnt knew shit about photography. Watching this video i find brooklyn photo look very very bland compared to irvine sons and the other guys.
If I’d taken those photos (Beckham’s) I wouldn’t bother showing most of them to my friends or family. Never mind expect to get them published. Also, if you want to do portraits of “tough” characters in “moody” poses, don’t use renowned nice guy David Beckham. He’s a polite, shy, charity supporting teddy bear. Tattoos and a cap don’t make him a street thug 😄
everyone saying “he’s got an advantage because his parents” is unfair to him !! he never asked for fame. He’s only learning and he’s passionate about taking photos which is amazing. stop hating on him guys
if he didn't ask for fame, then he wouldn't be in front of cameras promoting his shit, going on tv shows, doing magazine interviews, constantly taking topless photos on instagram. yeah, sure he didn't want to be famous?
Dombowerphoto no but I’m saying he didn’t have a choice either. You can tell the difference between him/his brothers and other social media influencers. Other social media influencers make songs, do acting jobs, and are always trying to entertain their fans but Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz don’t do that. (I know cruz made a song but that’s only because cruz has a passion for music other social media influencers do it for clout, and money. Most influencers can’t even sing lmao) They don’t really bother with fans like on instagram/other platforms they don’t respond to comments, follow fan pages because they didn’t ASK for fans..
There’s a theme here…..did the book without the hard graft, then recently he did a cooking slot, on The Late Show (heralding himself as a ‘chef’….. for steak and chips and a bacon and egg sandwich🙄). His parents are close friends with James Cordon so there was no merit in that either. If he would just learn his trade and mastered it no one would flag it up. But he side steps the hard work, the sacrifices, the hours then wonders why people don’t respect his work.
I don't think any novice or even bad photographer deserves abuse unless he walks around claiming to be great. Does this kid do that? Because it seems a little shitty to dump on the kid if he's not showing any kind of inflated ego... bash the people around him, who are trying to puff him up because they worship celebs or hope to tap into the family's money or whatever. If you're gonna roast him, at least make it funny. Shitting on the kid because he's a celeb doesn't make any more sense than worshipping him for it.
Noooo coonteeext, jest btthhhhh (I love the way you put stuff. Also a nice surprise to find you're a Scot, I'm a Welsh portrait artist, but I like learning from different places).
I get the critic on his pictures, but I also have to criticize this video. Brooklyn Beckham is in a learning process, he is 18 and in my opinion photographers are getting better with the years. I mean of course you can criticize him, but I think it would be way more helpful not to use sentences like 'this is just *pfffff*' . Brooklyn Beckham got an opportunity and maybe didn't took full advantage of it. So let's help him getting better.
too late the positive criticism or constructive criticism should have been done before he published his book, now he is just open to full blown criticism.
This wasn't a school project, it was an internationally published book. Even a school project is criticised. He has a lot to learn, fair enough. But go learn it. Not ride your parents celebrity straight to a book deal.
Jesus I don’t even know shit about Brooklyn Beckham but god damn, let the kid have fun and take photographs. If I got criticized like this just for experimenting with photography at a young age, I would have given up everything and gone for an office desk job
he can have fun, but if he is going to be getting a book published like a professional photographer he can get criticism like he is a professional. if he can't take the criticism he shouldn't put out a book and expect people to pay for it, keep it on instagram.
This is not to be rude or anything, but what makes a good photo? Do you have any videos on that? Recommendations anyone? I don't know anything about photography
sure do, have a link to it in every description box on my videos, yes i even have a book if you want to read. www.blurb.com/b/2215491-getting-there-with-photography
He tries, he succedes, he sells. Nothing bad here I think. Of course we are jealous because most people can make better fotos, but this "problem" is in every branche. Maybe we have to think about what we do wrong that we don't sell like him. When he studies it, be happy for him
pinoyillest: There is absolutely nothing wrong with people having room for improvement when they're learning. People shouldn't harshly criticise people's early shots. *However*, if they are publishing their photos and especially if they are publishing them for money, it's fair game. If you are selling your photos, they can be judged against every other person selling photos.
shit I've been a pro shooter for 25 years - so much nepotism in the business....if someone has an in with an Artdirector at a certain magazine, your portfolio doesn't even get looked at - my girlfriend was an assistant for the Art director or quite a well read and high end fashion mag in Toronto Canada - I was an up and coming fashion shooter...she straight up told me that the Art Director only used her nephew on every shoot at 2k a day.....it wasn't until I was featured on Fashion Televison with Jeannie Becker that my phone finally began to ring....then after three years of shooting nothing but fashion I was sick of it , hated the people I worked with and went straight back happily to shooting hard news as a stringer for Getty out of NYNY - saw more of that Beckham kid's work - terrible is being generous......thank god for the affordability of self publishing these days - you can now publish a few hundred of your own book for a reasonable price...I am working on a street book from three trips to Tokyo right now...
READ the reviews on Amazon, the made me laugh!!! especially the 5 star ones! where photographers were taking the mick!!! saying silly things like 5 stars for how to make a 10k look like a phone camera :)
You see, the guy has potential and even when he stopped, I would recommend him to hire a prof to give him personal workshops. A prof with a similar style to Anton Corbijn. The guy is obviously in his black-and-white era, which many starting photographers have, and some will never grow out of it and become very good at it, while others are realizing how they can make colours work. And no, it's not patronizing, because colours are a difficult thing to get right, so it makes sense that beginners want to focus on the light first, even when they don't realize it themselves. Most beginners want to think they are really thoughtful and original and I'm also poking a bit fun at my younger self. If painters are struggling with colour, Brooklyn as a photography beginner has every right not to know what to do with colour. Corbijn had problems with focus in the beginning as well, which made him develop his contrasty black-and-white style, so it was less visible his photos weren't focused well. Just like Corbijn, he can change his weakness into a strength. If I look at the photo of his dad's hands, a Corbijn like processing in Photoshop might actually safe some of the images. I get your problem with Brooklyn. His skills aren't good enough to achieve worldwide fame, which is a valid point. I think he can become that if he actually used his nepotism to become a serious photographer. There are resources enough for him. Even the branding of documenting his famous parents would be fine with me if he actually puts in the work to become good.
If all you did during my studio critiques was make tongue noises and call it meh... I’d kick you out for being completely useless and unhelpful. You keep saying in replies that his publication is open for the world to criticize .. and I totally agree .. but this video is just as amateur. The canted angle is unnecessary and your facecam is far too ironic for someone with the word ‘vapid’ in their vocabulary. Brooklyn’s work lacks charm for what seems to be an attempt at a documentation of his life. Your so called “good” examples don’t even mirror what Brooklyn is trying to accomplish. So even your own examples aren’t relevant and helpful. Cmon man. What’s the point of this upload if you’re just going to look just as unprofessional.
I mean I’d be mad too if someone as bad as him got that kind of fame and recognition... so maybe we should criticize the system that rewards and finances bad work instead of the kid. Because regardless of whether or not the kid is bad or not he is making money lol
Doodle Obv 'what I see' applies to every photographer who ever picked up a camera so what specifically did you think he was going for and why were the other examples inappropriate. Bear in mind one was an example if someone in a similar situation not similar work.
I think that statement : applies to every photographer who ever picked up a camera , actually very much encapsulates what the intentions are funny enough. It’s just bare bones documentation of what is happening around him. I’d say his intentions are the same as the average person taking out their cell phone and documenting something that is a feature or outlier of their day to day life. I guess I could be a little clearer with that, my apologies. Everything has an intention, no one just picks up a camera for absolutely no reason. His intention is to (without any creativity or style) document the life around him. I think pulling artists who do similar types of almost casual documentation of their experiences would do better. Tbh it’s been 2 weeks since I’ve watched this so I don’t remember what references he used but i think it was mostly focusing on lighting and vague technical talk (but again I don’t remember and idk if i feel like watching it again.) I’d personally like to critique the photo of his dad a bit more. Clearly it’s a casual portrait of his dad in some random shop. ‘What I see’... what was so special about the way he saw his dad at that moment. There’s nothing particularly candid about it. Being someone who grew up with camcorders and home video VHS tapes, and now living in an age of Snapchat Instagram etc, a photo series like this feels void of charm, warmth, or down-to-earth-ness... which I feel should go hand-in-hand with something like this Ok im done. I’m in bed so this is a late night ramble. Oops
Have to say i agree with you fully and i was of the same opinion in the start, ie give him a chance but after seeing his work (read snapshots) my opinion changed. Problem is he will undoubtably be getting work an actual photog would have got purely because he's a beckam.
I think that those are different kinds of photography, though? Brooklyn’s are more experimental and fashion magazine’s kind it isn’t about telling something that will change your life for seeing it but to appreciate the beauty on some mundane things. And I do think that Brooklyn’s are similar to Tommy’s in a way, Brooklyn’s preference is to use b&w and there are many photographers who have that too. I’m not saying he deserves all that praise but that it’s just his style. He’s studying photography on a fashion school so that should be expected, nobody has to have a set style by any age, famous parents or not, he can explore and still be good at what he does. He’s not the best but also he isn’t the worst at it.
It says "what I see" on the book, not "let me teach you photography." art is subjective and "lines leading to a subject" are not mandatory. Just let the kid live his life. If you have a problem with it then maybe you have too much time on your hands.
Beckham should do a series of one topic. The photos just look super random with no story. But I guess he is still trying to figure out the techniques and ideas. Right now they look super boring. But when he sells so well then maybe we have to think about what to do different to sell like him.
Can the maker of this video or anyone explain wtf he means when he says there “isn’t much there” or “nothing is happening” how is something happening in anything of those close ups with an animal yet nothing is happening when he takes a pic of a ton of ppl at the beach? I know nothing a photography but I’m confused
I think he means it in an abstract way as something special that makes the picture unique, for the animal photography it's the composition, the opposite colors contrasting and the sense of danger whereas the picture of the beach isn't as exciting or as visually pleasing to him. There isn't that one thing that attracts your attention so they feel a bit "flat" if you get what I mean. I hope that made things a bit clearer for you, he didn't really try to explain any his criticism though, and I think it's a bit rude of a video to make tbh
Irwins son does seem to definitely have some solid skills - love what I saw......beckman? or rather Beckham, my mistake, have to agree with our host - pure shite - pure nepotism thus no comment really necessary as the photos speak for themself....crapola!!
I'm my opinion, his photographs are basically like an aunt taking a photo but with a really fancy camera... they're just not that interesting to look at, especially if he's going to them in B&W. He just got really lucky because of his parents. This just goes to show that you can have really good equipment but not a photographers eye.
Dude I enjoyed your ppffffff sounds and the noises you made while going through good Photographer's photos. Agree with what you said throughout the video!
These guys obviously miss the point that his target audience are interested in instagram fashion photos, say, Juergen Teller, David Sims, Petra Collins, that kind of direction. It's plain, boring, yes, but that's what's going on circulating in their culture. Not the great techniques you like being what they care about at all.
No prior knowledge to this before watching this video and I can really say I feel the same way. His pictures are pictures... but they're not particularly good or special pictures. If anything, it's like a celebration of mediocrity.
Dombowerphoto I'm not really seeing the logic behind that statement. People still write constructive criticisms on movies once they've been released worldwide. That aside, the video would have not only been more entertaining but also educational for people who don't know as much about photography; but instead, you made a video that boiled down to, "This guy sucks." I'm not trying to attack you; I'm just giving constructive criticism.
CaDArts CaDArts even if he doesn't make another book, constructive criticism could help grow as a photographer and understand why his book was not well received. He doesn't owe brooklyn anything but I do expect him to make interesting content for his subscribers.
I understand if u think he’s bad or whatever, but I just don’t understand where all of this salt is coming from, like it’s not like his “success” (for lack of a better word) does ANYTHING to ur personal life, does it? Let him do him and u can do u, if ppl wanna but his book let them buy his book, there’s too much unnecessary hatred in the world anyways
He could take the first picture of an alien and this guy would be like: "It's just an alien... just nothing..." Meanwhile looking at some other dude's picture of a random person: "Look at the colors, look at the composition, omg so cool."
interesting point of view. his work maybe doesn't deserve to be published (many others deserve it more) but i think his work will be something that will be interesting to follow
I’m instantly thinking of Stella McCartney, granddaughter of Lee Eastman, Daughter of Linda McCartney who was a very accomplished photographer in her own right and I think her dad once sang or wrote a jingle or something like that. She tried to fight against her family's influence and wanted to do it in her own right. OK, it might have been like King Canute trying to turn back the tide, but you can’t maintain about 25 years of high level success in the fashion industry living off your parents names. I don’t begrudge the children of famous people success, and in some cases it must be hard as there will always be "Its not because of your talent, but because of who your mum and dad are." All credit to Steve Irwin's son, he’s got talent and is working hard with it, but I couldn't make head nor tail of Beckham's images. I know my grandsons are both younger, only got bridge cameras I bought them and are both taking far better images.
19 isn't a kid!! i thought the guy in the video was pretty fair on brooklyn - he said what was wrong with the photos and suggested another photographer to check out in order to improve his work.
Wayne Gretzky doesn't make hockey sticks, Micheal Jordan doesn't make sports shoes, Tiger Woods doesn't make golf clubs and David Beckham doesn't do soccer balls. These guys are in advertising because they have a following of people. If some company wants to bank on his celebrity status and following his photography talent can be secondary
Photography is very subjective. You’re looking for someone else’s work in Brooklyn’s photos. People have different aesthetics. You just can’t see it yet.
After looking at the pro photos his look so much worse. I am a film guy and what I like doing is imagining the shots turned into a movie scene. The photos from the kid look like a decent shot from a decent looking movie. The shots from the pro look better than anything you see in film. Really declaring themselves their own separate perfect single frame form of art.
‘all stuff you could really do with a toys r us camera’ since when has it mattered what kind of camera you use?? it’s about the actual image and not the amount of pixels? his work is not that bad imo but i’m young myself ...maybe let him develop before you pull him down? how good was your work when you were his age?
no, he has already developed, developed enough to be published by a major company and charging people for it. his work is not bad. it is shit. When i was his age.... has nothing to do with it. but lets say, how good was my work when i published my first book... oh lets see, check out my book (link in the description of every video)
I saw one of this photos which was an Elephant that was backlit, the photo was fucking awful but the caption under it was something like "Elephants are so hard to get photos of". Are they fuck. He just has no idea what he's doing and has a load of people kissing his arse telling him everything is wonderful. I too thought all of his photos were shit and boring.
I like you Dom but you're talking like you've never taken a bad photo in your life. How about you pot your first photos and we tell you how shit they are. He probably shouldn't have published a book but at least he gave it a go and will learn from it.
oh i have taken lots of bad photos. but never would i put them in a book, and expect a publisher to then charge £20 for it to be sold to silly little fan girls in shops across the globe. But my first photos were actually great, won front covers of magazines and i did make a book with some of the photos from the very first year i had a camera, check it out www.blurb.co.uk/b/2215491
Adam Smith yep. Sure. Click any of the links in the description that take you to my blog, website, multiple Facebook pages, published book. Guess you are new here.
Well, to be honest Dom, your book preview is probably the best source of your photo work although those are just miniatures. Aside from this, your website is down, your FB fanpage has only some mix of architecture shots and child photos in between of everything else, and Twitter account is simply a mess in terms of content - fitness, dieting, tech news, and plenty more as it seems. Come on man. Discussing gear is one thing and and these days everyone seems to be opinionated on the topic while truthfully any camera will take a proper picture. But if one gets into criticizing somebody's photography it is nice to have some decent body of work to point at and say "that's the way I would do it." Having said that, Brooklyn Beckham is indeed a case of bad nepotism. I don't think his book is the biggest problem thou. I mean, maybe some hardcore fan of Spice Girls or David Beckham groupies will buy it but otherwise it will probably be soon forgotten. A much bigger fiasco IMO was his Burberry ad shot where essentially everything was set up and prepared for him just to come over and press the shutter button. Basically a gig he was not able to fuck up even if he showed up high and had an epilepsy attack on the set. And the clear problem is he took bread away from some real photographer who could have shoot this ad campaign and take money and credit for it. That's not cool to me.
Art is subjective. There’s no proper way to take a photo if you’re an artist. Stop hating because he’s famous. Anything he does will get attention. Others will have to work harder. Tis life
The pics aren’t horrid, but they’re pictures literally anyone can take on an iPhone. I had friends in high school that took better photos. Brooklyn Beckham would not have been on if it wasn’t for who his parents are. He could do hella more with the resources he has access to.
He is young... still has time to develop and grow as a photographer. I know when I look back at some of my earlier photographs, I cringe because at the time I thought they were good. Give him time lol
Did you also publish and sell millions of copies of your bad photos because your rich celebrity parents funded your bad hobby? Of course not! So why give him a pass for his lack of talent? Yes, we've all been there. Yet he's benefitted from nepotism and celebrity and gotten all the love in the world DESPITE being as bad as all of us when we began!
He's got where he is because of his parents but he's also getting knocked because of his parents. If this was just some random kid putting this out, it wouldnt receive this level of criticism because you would just click and move on. Thats why for me it comes out as jealousy of the position he has been put in and not a genuine detest for his images.
I agree with some of your comments, but I don't think his photos are really that bad. In photography there is a steep learning curve and he is doing well for how long he has been doing this.
@@Dombowerphoto ahh...so your problem is that his work has been published and they are making money selling his book. I agree with the fact that he has an advantage so he can create and sell anything he wants regardless of whether he is talented or not.
Hold on guys, his photography isn't the best skilled i agree but photography is not always about capturing captivating shots that are super skilled , photography is art no matter the skill it means something to someone.
I agree with you for the most part, but the video would’ve of been more useful for other amateur or aspiring photographers if you did more constructive criticism besides saying that his photos are dull and have no subject. I personally clicked on this video to learn what was wrong with his photos and to learn how to improve my own photography, but I feel like I just wasted 10 minutes on mouth farts and comparisons to other photographers that are clearly just so much better. Idk I guess maybe that wasn’t the point of this video, but I probably would’ve learned just as much by flipping through his book myself.
He hasn't learnt much - so really shouldn't be charging people for a published book of his "WORK"
David and victoria also had a hand in the selection process and publication.
his photos are not bad, they are terrible
my photos are in focus and have a subject.
criticism ≠ jealousy
I don't need to be constructive. his book is already constructed.
Dombowerphoto THIS 👏🏼
I agree with you, i can take better photos than he
Good job on this "photography review"? Anyway i think its well done. Also I feel the sudden real urge for someone to roast my photos too. Id really like that haha...
Dombowerphoto he definitely shouldn’t be charging . You’re right
Sorry Dom, I wholeheartedly disagree with what you are saying, of course people are jealous because we have this mindset in the current age of instant gratification and when we see something like this it pushes our buttons, our envy clicks in to gear, we all have it but why can't we flip that.... and be positive towards people and their actions...
Don't worry about what Brooklyn is up to, he is doing just fine, whether you think his photos are "shit" or not and he has as much right as anyone else who owns a camera to release a book :)
My 2 pence worth.
Am I the only one who's lightly annoyed that the whole browser is rotated ~15°
Yes.
I came to the comments to see black if anyone agreed
I think it's recorded at an angel by a camera outside of the computer. Could have been screen recorded but he was straight to the point and you could still see the photos so 🤷🏻♀️
actually to avoid copyright claims
It's so artsy! You're too stupid to understand!!!
Brooklyns photos are literally photos that everyone could take.
and everyone else could write better captions.
Fuck off
No, I can't take photos like that. No matter how hard I try... my photography skills still cannot go that low.
His career has barely started and he has achieved what people work for for their whole life.
achieved.... being given a medal for attendance is not an achievement.
and his photos are not fine, they are shit.
+dombower Yes. From a photographer that has worked for a few years like Brooklyn, they should have way more skill
Niamh C no honestly his pictures are shit
What an insult to aspiring photographers Utter pish. .
Wait, whats wrong with auto again??
I know nothing about photography. What I can tell from this is, SevenIrwin’s son has an eye. He has an eye for amazing shots and he’s damn lucky. The other guy THINKS he has an eye, but he’s really just a hipster. His pictures SEEM like they’re supposed to evoke a feeling, but they don’t because he doesn’t know what he’s doing
bingo
Not going to lie, I didn’t think they were completely bad until you showed the photos by Tommy Gak-Ken Wan. The difference was remarkable. Tommy’s work was in another league and really highlighted how meaningless and bland Beckham’s images are.
Wow, you totally read my thoughts!
I actually looked through the book in a bookshop and the pics you showed are fantastic compared to some of the images you didn't show. The other pics should have been deleted by the publisher - they're the worst I've ever seen!
colblimp better than your book. Oh wait... easy to criticise someone who’s actually done something from your couch.
Logic Police you could call a movie terrible without ever having made one
Not everyone who criticizes is a hater, even if they’re on their couch.
Absolutely no talent.
looks like he is just trying to learn. the only mistake is some book publisher saw an opportunity to make money from his fame.
@@Michelle-oo9gp - You are not crazy. BB just thinking he'll turn his hand to anything and become famous...…….. twat that he is !
Sorry, but he has no understanding of anything. He's not just a shit photographer!
I'm just a graphics designer, not a photographer. But he just has 0 real emotion, terrible composition, its just plain boring..
i concur, most of his pictures were out of focus.
what are your thoughts on cole sprouse then? hes famous from his childhood acting (and current), and has done photography work.
ann to me cole sprouse is way better than him. He did quite a few photoshoots for magazines even at the time that he’s not that famous as now. (Before riverdale) I don’t think his love to photography has to do with his name or such. I think he just that kinda guy that always love to carry his camera all the time and genuinely loves photography.
Esther Jane I am a photo student in college and I completely agree. Cole is different, more refined, and has skill
Art can be anything, including nothing at all.
He needs to take an intro to art class or something and learn about the principles of design.
the criticisms are as bland as his photos.
I dont get the point of bitching young Beckham... if he wants to be a photograph let the dude experiment and be whatever the fuck he wants to be.... All this negative bullshit is Art's Cancer...
Nonono, letting stuff like the photos he published go unnoticed is the actual modern day cancer. We still need to have standards bruv
He won't stop taking photos ... as I didn't stop writing movie scripts when all my teachers found them boring, irrelevant, to pretentious, and déjà-vu. What if we set aside our doubts about fine art, to be as care-free as a child painting a page with delight. Coz , Kids dont worry themselves about the Criticism, they just throw paint at the page just to see what the colours do.
sɪˈkɑːdə 9
Came for the rant, stayed for the rant, analysis, tips and inspiration.
If you took your holiday pics in b&w they'd basically come out as good if not better than this
thankfully I`ve never lost my photographic skills while on holiday :)
Good thing he has his "cooking" skills to fall back on. Oh wait....
"Let's make this photo greyscale so it becomes art"
I actually liked the picture of his dad :'D the rest wasnt very good though
Still not good enough to be published
There’s a theme here…..did the book without the hard graft, then recently he did a cooking slot, on The Late Show (heralding himself as a ‘chef’….. for steak and chips and a bacon and egg sandwich🙄). His parents are close friends with James Cordon so there was no merit in that either. If he would just learn his trade and mastered it no one would flag it up. But he side steps the hard work, the sacrifices, the hours then wonders why people don’t respect his work.
That Tommy photographer you recommended was insane, every photo had so much character.
Shitting on the kid because he's a celeb doesn't make any more sense than worshipping him for it.
why on earth is the web browser tilted such a strange way to see photos.
How are you going to have a photo critique session and show all the photos at an angle??
So let's help him getting better.
we need to help him? get better? he is already an internationally published photographer... just a really shit one
If that is your opinion, fine, but I just think he can do better, when he get criticized in a constructive way
too late the positive criticism or constructive criticism should have been done before he published his book, now he is just open to full blown criticism.
This wasn't a school project, it was an internationally published book. Even a school project is criticised. He has a lot to learn, fair enough. But go learn it. Not ride your parents celebrity straight to a book deal.
Mio Coconut: If someone publishes their photography in a book, it's fair game for criticism. It doesn't matter how old they are.
Jesus I don’t even know shit about Brooklyn Beckham but god damn, let the kid have fun and take photographs. If I got criticized like this just for experimenting with photography at a young age, I would have given up everything and gone for an office desk job
he can have fun, but if he is going to be getting a book published like a professional photographer he can get criticism like he is a professional. if he can't take the criticism he shouldn't put out a book and expect people to pay for it, keep it on instagram.
dombower hmmmmmm true, I didn’t think of the published factor. I can understand and accept that opinion
I believe he was just commissioned to do a shoot for Burberry.
This is not to be rude or anything, but what makes a good photo? Do you have any videos on that? Recommendations anyone? I don't know anything about photography
sure do, have a link to it in every description box on my videos, yes i even have a book if you want to read. www.blurb.com/b/2215491-getting-there-with-photography
And that’s why he is at a university to become better. Let the kid grow.
pinoyillest Should have had all of that before being an internationally published photographer. Because his success doesn't match his work.
pinoyillest he's just jacked in the photography course, maybe he's woken up to how shit he is compared to his fellow students work........it happens
MaryArts they are gsrbage look up other peoplr
it is sad these celebrity brats get right to the million dollar pay offs without any of the work put in......
shit I've been a pro shooter for 25 years - so much nepotism in the business....if someone has an in with an Artdirector at a certain magazine, your portfolio doesn't even get looked at - my girlfriend was an assistant for the Art director or quite a well read and high end fashion mag in Toronto Canada - I was an up and coming fashion shooter...she straight up told me that the Art Director only used her nephew on every shoot at 2k a day.....it wasn't until I was featured on Fashion Televison with Jeannie Becker that my phone finally began to ring....then after three years of shooting nothing but fashion I was sick of it , hated the people I worked with and went straight back happily to shooting hard news as a stringer for Getty out of NYNY - saw more of that Beckham kid's work - terrible is being generous......thank god for the affordability of self publishing these days - you can now publish a few hundred of your own book for a reasonable price...I am working on a street book from three trips to Tokyo right now...
READ the reviews on Amazon, the made me laugh!!! especially the 5 star ones! where photographers were taking the mick!!! saying silly things like 5 stars for how to make a 10k look like a phone camera :)
I read on line that his parents had bought up all the books to pretend that it had been selling.
Let him grow man. He's still young
who cares about his age, look at steve Erwins kid, he is doing just fine and is much younger
dombower he still needs to learn about photography and all that jazz, chill out
You see, the guy has potential and even when he stopped, I would recommend him to hire a prof to give him personal workshops.
@@frameout2035 he didn’t. He gave up
His photos say less then 1000 words.
Because regardless of whether or not the kid is bad or not he is making money lol
you think brooklyn was trying to "accomplish" something?
yes. he failed miserably. but yes, the title of his mediocre collection seems to imply so.
"what I see" ... lol how generic
Tbh it’s been 2 weeks since I’ve watched this so I don’t remember what references he used but i think it was mostly focusing on lighting and vague technical talk (but again I don’t remember and idk if i feel like watching it again.)
I’d personally like to critique the photo of his dad a bit more. Clearly it’s a casual portrait of his dad in some random shop. ‘What I see’... what was so special about the way he saw his dad at that moment. There’s nothing particularly candid about it. Being someone who grew up with camcorders and home video VHS tapes, and now living in an age of Snapchat Instagram etc, a photo series like this feels void of charm, warmth, or down-to-earth-ness... which I feel should go hand-in-hand with something like this
Ok im done. I’m in bed so this is a late night ramble. Oops
Why is your screen tilted? Im feeling dizzy
I never really thought much about photography but seeing as though the quality matters has really opened my mind
Have to say i agree with you fully and i was of the same opinion in the start, ie give him a chance but after seeing his work (read snapshots) my opinion changed.
Problem is he will undoubtably be getting work an actual photog would have got purely because he's a beckam.
I hate when people try to put rules, and blockades on photography, some of his pictures were not bad honestly.
Good to see some common sense.
It says "what I see" on the book, not "let me teach you photography." art is subjective and "lines leading to a subject" are not mandatory. Just let the kid live his life. If you have a problem with it then maybe you have too much time on your hands.
no problem with it, have you never heard of criticism before? you must be part of this snowflake generation that can't take criticism.
Dombowerphoto aight listen here i dont disagree with anything in the video but this right there was the most pretentious and self-enamored shit ever
You have literally replied to almost every comment critisising you by insulting them or being extremely pretentious
Beckham should do a series of one topic. The photos just look super random with no story. But I guess he is still trying to figure out the techniques and ideas. Right now they look super boring.
But when he sells so well then maybe we have to think about what to do different to sell like him.
yes, get born to a famous father and mother.
they look like photos people take with their phones when they are on vacation, not much more.
Mate.. you might wanna check the link to your webpage in the description...
Love to see your doing more vids. Keep them coming
“Don’t ignore the tingle, act on it”
You presented little to no constructive criticism. Just fart noises with your mouth.
constructive criticism would have been while he was constructing his internationally published book. not after.
Dombowerphoto I'm not really seeing the logic behind that statement. People still write constructive criticisms on movies once they've been released worldwide.
That aside, the video would have not only been more entertaining but also educational for people who don't know as much about photography; but instead, you made a video that boiled down to, "This guy sucks."
I'm not trying to attack you; I'm just giving constructive criticism.
Brooke agreed
Brooke constructive criticism is only useful if the person plans to make another book/video. Brooklyn probably isnt because he is shite.
CaDArts CaDArts even if he doesn't make another book, constructive criticism could help grow as a photographer and understand why his book was not well received.
He doesn't owe brooklyn anything but I do expect him to make interesting content for his subscribers.
Everyone needs criticism, awesome video
I understand if u think he’s bad or whatever, but I just don’t understand where all of this salt is coming from, like it’s not like his “success” (for lack of a better word) does ANYTHING to ur personal life, does it? Let him do him and u can do u, if ppl wanna but his book let them buy his book, there’s too much unnecessary hatred in the world anyways
"'Demeaning the skill of decent photographers" well said. What makes me even more PISSED is that he shot a campaign for Burberry.
He could take the first picture of an alien and this guy would be like: "It's just an alien... just nothing..."
Meanwhile looking at some other dude's picture of a random person: "Look at the colors, look at the composition, omg so cool."
he would take a shit, out of focus, under exposed, badly composed shot of an aliens foot...
@@Dombowerphoto I agree with u. He simply doesn't know the basics
OK BUT IN THE FIRST PHOTO HE CUT HIS DAD OFF BEFORE THE ELBOW. YOU DONT CUT PEOPLE OFF AT THE JOINTS
interesting point of view.
his work maybe doesn't deserve to be published
(many others deserve it more)
but i think his work will be something that will be interesting to follow
I want you to shit on my photography. Steve Irwin's kid and that Tommy guy are amazing photographers. Makes me wants to really develop my skills.
His mother has funded a "team" to assist Brooklyns photography .Its all fake and part of "Brand Beckham "
end pop culture's nepotism!
i normally like any picture i see but i feel like most of these could’ve been taken on an iphone and would look the exact same
I’m instantly thinking of Stella McCartney, granddaughter of Lee Eastman, Daughter of Linda McCartney who was a very accomplished photographer in her own right and I think her dad once sang or wrote a jingle or something like that.
Glad you made this video. Someone needs to be the one who exclaims "The King isn't wearing any clothes!".
The kids 19 and I thought his book was ok. Art is diffrent to everyone. No need be so cruel in your interpetation ✌
19 isn't a kid!! i thought the guy in the video was pretty fair on brooklyn - he said what was wrong with the photos and suggested another photographer to check out in order to improve his work.
Where you've been Dom. Glad you're back.
Y the video tilted?
to make it more arty. failed
Photography is very subjective. You’re looking for someone else’s work in Brooklyn’s photos. People have different aesthetics. You just can’t see it yet.
Jonathan Garcia technique and craft isn't debatable you blowhard
Art in general is subjective
But I know a two year olds drawing isn't good art
Just like we all know, brooklyns photography is pure shite
MuH AEsThetiCs
Jonathan Garcia in any art, you need to know the rules and use them to be able to break them imo.
I thought some of them were pretty good. 🤷♀️ He’ll get better, especially if he listens to constructive criticism. Could be worse!
The same happened with that guy who shot the royal wedding. What a joke that was
If Brooklyn Beckham can get famous for his photography at such a young age and with such little skill, I think that I can make it as a photographer.
Can we see some of your work anywhere Dom? ✌🏼
Adam Smith links in the info about this video to his work. Nice try though.
Adam Smith yep. Sure. Click any of the links in the description that take you to my blog, website, multiple Facebook pages, published book. Guess you are new here.
dombower 😂👍🏻
nice try adam
Well, to be honest Dom, your book preview is probably the best source of your photo work although those are just miniatures. Aside from this, your website is down, your FB fanpage has only some mix of architecture shots and child photos in between of everything else, and Twitter account is simply a mess in terms of content - fitness, dieting, tech news, and plenty more as it seems. Come on man. Discussing gear is one thing and and these days everyone seems to be opinionated on the topic while truthfully any camera will take a proper picture. But if one gets into criticizing somebody's photography it is nice to have some decent body of work to point at and say "that's the way I would do it."
Having said that, Brooklyn Beckham is indeed a case of bad nepotism.
Tis life
go to instagram yall see 14-15 yrs old taking much much better photo than Beckham's kid. this is sad
Hey dom! You should do a vid where you review your subscribers photography
did that many times, usually while drunk
I'd be honoured to have my Instagram Gallery given a constructive criticism by you, great video btw!
Damn that Tommy ga ken wan dude is amazing
In photography there is a steep learning curve and he is doing well for how long he has been doing this.
is he doing well for an internationally published photographer who has worked with brands like burbery and assisted with photographers like Rankin....
@@Dombowerphoto ahh...so your problem is that his work has been published and they are making money selling his book. I agree with the fact that he has an advantage so he can create and sell anything he wants regardless of whether he is talented or not.
Visited your own website recently or is that a troll?
Agreed. I really wanted to hear some helpful criticism for this guy, and how it can help myself.
i was like, oh it cannot be THAT bad................ omg it is bad, it is so bad
His photos are laughable. He needs to learn more than pretending to be a real photographer.
