Is there an advantage white wine has over vinegar as an additive? I learnt to mix yolk with vinegar and a splash of vodka (from a Russian iconographer).
I think it would be very similar. I learnt white wine off an iconographer too :). Maybe the only problem might be the acidity using vinegar. That can destroy some colours though the gesso should neutralise it.
No it methyl alcohol and is very poisonous. It can be absorbed through the skin and by breathing it in, so if you are going to use it just don't splash it about in a poorly ventilated space.

Wow, the addition of wine is by no means necessary and that is far too much. The volume of wine you poured in should have been water and left at that.
