Imagine what the Iranians would be without a certain unnameable religion governing their lives. :/
An interesting tidbit of the human migration is that the first of man to to really really really settle, thrive and live in Eastern Europe and the northern Germanic areas more than likely migrated from steppes of modern day Iran/Afghanistan to the northwest. Our dope ancestors from those area woulda been a helluva more advanced, than they once already were had the setback of al ha snack bar not happened.
Before one starts getting upset, I’m not saying 100% from the area. I’m saying some of the first to the Germanic areas were from the areas of Iran/Afghanistan. This isn’t a theory, it’s not based on linguistics either, strictly based on DNA haplogroups which has shown that in-fact the nearest common ancestor most northern Europeans have in common, came from the aforementioned areas first. Hence the %s are minimal but date accurately to support the archeological evidence.

What about the part about how difficult it is to supply a war effort across the Zagros mountains? And the part about how difficult it is for Iran to have naval power because of the easily blockaded Hormuz? Iran's geography gives it only one benefit. It can't be moved from that one spot. Otherwise, it is incredibly difficult for Iran to actually expand it's size and influence. All they have now is oil located in an area that could easily be taken from them.

Why does everyone think that Iran's ethnic groups want to rise against Iran? Saddam thought the same thing when he attacked, but the reality is something else. Culturally, Iran has made all people consider themselves Iranians. In general, in Iran, Persian, Arab, Kurdish and Azeri and the rest only refer to the language and place of life. Everyone first considers themselves Iranian and then mentions the language and place of life. All previous empires are considered Iranian and they love it. It is enough to see Iran closely. In terms of nationality, it has a lot of integrity. Although it has its own problems, including the economy!

I’m 64 and originally from Iran but spent most of my life in the states… close to 50 years of it. I started traveling to Iran, learning about it, and its culture after my retirement a few years ago. I couldn’t disagree more with the findings and the title of this video. Iran’s unique geography is its greatest strength imho. There are major roads throughout its numerous mountain ranges to satisfy their commercial or military requirements while making the mainland easily defendable. I’ve traveled and spoken to people of various tribes in the south (even some Arabic speaking ones) as well as the Turks in the north and just about everything in between. They all patriotically associate themselves with Iran unlike what this video implies. That is in spite of people’s general dissatisfaction with the current government.
Strait of Hurmuz is also a huge bargaining chip and deterrent for Iran’s potential enemies since it is totally controlled by Iran not to mention more than 200 hundred miles of additional southern shores outside of it. Iran might seek influence to its west (and east btw... as anyone would) but it has never tried to expand its borders (as this video suggests) judging by its history unless you go back 2000 years or more.
Makes me wonder what this guy was smoking when he came up with all his conclusions!

When Saddam's regime was on the verge of bankruptcy after a few years of war, the Saudi's and gulf Arabs gave him something like 200 billion dollars to start. That debt was why Saddam later invaded Kuwait. You also have to consider the fact that after the revolution, all of Iran's top generals and 5000 top officers were purged, fled, retired, etc and Iran's tanks and jets were western, American and British. Iran was not able to get vital parts for their weapons and the thousands of western technicians left. Not only did they leave, they took all of the tools and even repair manuals with them. Iran's geographic limitation would be that its arid landscape means despite the age of its civilisation, it could never develop into the population size of China or India. By contrast, Iran has the perfect defensive geography which makes any invasion of the Persian heartland extremely difficult. Trump just backed out of escalating a conflict with Iran, because it will be much more than 10x worse than Iraq. Iran has plenty of mineral resources, plenty of room for producing renewable energy that would last the country to the end of times (and is actually its second source of income, as they directly supply neighboring countries with less favorable geography), access to two different seas and a direct ocean route that the video conveniently disregarded, and plenty of arable land as well, which is actually the second reason why the Khuzestan province is so important to the country, being among its most fertile. All in all, I don't think the video did its research that well.
The only way Iran is screwed is the sanctions, which had to be put on literally _everything_ for it to work, and it seems that even that is no longer a concern with China being ready to fill the gap. All in all, collapsing Iran isn't easy at all, which is why 4 of the greatest empires in the history of the world as well as the Islam of the Golden Ages had Iran as their seat of power. Well during Alexander conquest, the Persian also hired thousands Greek Hoplite mercenaries. After Alexander died, many nations (Persian, Bachtrian, Egyptian, even Roman) copied the Macedonian Phalanxs. So greek style units were actually very common at that time.

@@Mishe03 Meh.... people will use whatever works. The greek mercenaries were employed by the Persian because the greeks knows how to fight other greeks. Meanwhile, Alexander used more horse achers and Persian light infantries in Bachtria, Sogdia and Indus river because he faced a more mobile war.
During war people are more pragmatic. The vikings were employed by the Christian Byzantium. The Indian elephant riders, the Numidian horsemen, and the Iberian Gallic warriors were employed by Hanibal. The German tribes were employed by the roman as Auxillary units. Just because one type of units were originated in particular nation or region does not mean they cannot be deployed somewhere else.
I'm sorry if I offended you in anyway. I studied Alexander and I know that he was a megalomaniac, he showed this trait when he massacred the citizen of Thebes. Those massacre made him so unpopular among greek citizens. He also has many cases of narcisistic and delusional of grandeur which could only be tolerated by the troops because he keep winning battles. I believe the whole reason why Alexander invaded Persia was because he want to save his own head. He need money to bribe the Macedonian nobles so he plundered the Persian empire. The other thing is Iran was always bigger than modern day Iran so using its modern size when talking about the past land size doesn’t make sense, since Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Babylon and Kurdistan were always a part of it for long periods of time.

Shah had a program to expand Iranian navy to the Indian Ocean, but the revolution happened and the program was terminated. Iran's Navy had battles with GB's navy, and won couple of them.
