    Japan:

    • @sondadir9205
      @sondadir9205 3 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      It's not the Geography per say, but the horrible dispersion of the population.
      Connecting east to west by train would undoubtedly give rise to economically unsustainable lines.
      Yes there are great plains ideal for the layout of the tracks, but if they cross a huge pop° vacuum it is not profitable.

    • @jaehongsong4904
      @jaehongsong4904 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@sondadir9205 Surely USA can connect east cost states by themselves and connect west coast states by themselves. I can see a high speed train from dc to phili to nyc to boston very profitable. Maybe extend it all the way to Miami.

    • @Zoetherat
      @Zoetherat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@jaehongsong4904 I read an article once that said that for high speed rail to be profitable, the cities have to be at a particular distance and of a particular size. Too close and it makes more sense to drive. Too far apart and it makes more sense to fly. The article listed Los Angeles to San Francisco, Dallas to Houston, and NY to Washington DC as the routes that would be profitable. Well, the first has already been tried, and the politicians turned it into an expensive debacle. Also, there are other factors. Most US cities are so spread out that they'll never have good public transportation and you'd need a car to get around once you reach your destination anyway (unlike Japan).

    • @Zoetherat
      @Zoetherat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Actually Japan's geography does work for high speed rail. It has high population density (large cities that are fairly close together). The cities themselves are compact enough to have good public transportation within the cities themselves. The US is the exact opposite- mostly small cities that are spread out over a vast area. And most of those cities are sprawl that will never have good public transportation. Even if you arrived at one via public transportation, you'd need a car when you get there anyway.

    • @0163844098
      @0163844098 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Building High Speed Rails is very addicting, once you built the first one, more will come soon after. America just have not gotten pass building the first one.

    Very good overview. Here's a couple of additional points that people might be interested in.
    1. Thanks to volcanism Japan has the most naturally fertile soil in the world. This helped the country to support large populations going into the industrial age.
    2. Thanks to its location in the northern hemisphere Japan had excellent fishing grounds. This also contributed to its large population.
    3. In addition to earthquakes and tsunamis, Japan suffers from landslides and flooding due to its high rainfall and steep mountains.

      Japan's terrain actually has many advantages as it's one of the most difficult countries to invade. Japan is rich in sea territory which is the 8th largest in the world. Japan has a huge amount of natural riches in the deep sea (minerals, gas, oil) which can be mined with better technology. Japan also creates new reclaimed land and artificial islands from the sea whenever new land is needed.

    • @Jonathanizer
      @Jonathanizer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      @@VAArtemchuk Not saying the Japanese claim is valid, but "never really theirs" as you put is also wrong, the Russian government ceded those islands to Japan in contract in the 19th century, in return Japan would leave Sakhalin to Russian administration. That was the deal back then. The imho better reasons why the Islands should be Russian are: a) Japan lost the war, for a lost war loosing disputed territory is normal and b) The inhabitants now are mostly ethnic people from former Soviet states.
      Big picture: these Islands are not worth arguing over for two countries of over 100 mio inhabitants, the only reason why a solution is not found yet is, that these kind of conflicts can always be used to rile up the population with nationalist rhetoric and an "us vs them" propaganda. So what these Islands claims mostly provide is political leverage for those in power. That's probably the only reason why the issue isn't resolved yet.

    The creator of this video has a big misunderstanding. It means that the geography of Japan was not so disadvantaged until modern civilization, which consumes a lot of energy, appeared. In the waters around Japan, where warm and cold ocean currents intersect, fish catches are abundant. Since it rains frequently in mountainous terrain, timber resources are abundant. It is also suitable for growing rice, which is highly dependent on population, and there has been sufficient food production until modern times. Until the Middle Ages, Japan was a rich country in gold and silver, producing 1/3 of the world's silver. They were all mined before Japan's industrial revolution in the 19 century, but until modern times, Japan's geographical conditions were not so bad.

      @@qwertyuiopzxcvbnm9890 I mean, technically it's possible, but the wording of the narration heavily leads you to interpret the closures as permanent ("by 2012" instead of "in 2012"). So if that's true, then it's extremely misleading language.

      @Boi It is a country. Thus you use "it".

      It’s a good term to use, people use the “she” prefix on cars, ships and countries, because, like a mother, she carries and sustains life.

      Japan is not the place to get rich. its overpopulated. everyone is competitive. you gotta make something out of nothing and sell it to the world. anime, music, sushi, autos, machinery, steel, etc. some parks require you to pay to go in or pay to use public washroom. that's just how you make a living.
