Just picked up Highland RWD few weeks ago at Drammen, was driving home just after that crazy snowfall in Oslo, had a lot of snow on roads, but I could drive close to speed limit in most stretches, up to 70 (no E6 etc..), and it handles pretty well. There was one right turn on the downhill where I had a bit of fishtail when I started to break during the bend, which I quickly corrected by releasing the break :) So far I'm still very careful and usually driving slower than usual, because I don't want to risk it and test when I could lose the grip on turns.. Especially on country roads. But as you said, heavy vehicle, low center of gravity, super smart ESP and TC, all contributes to a good handling in winter conditions even with studless tires.
I’m struggling between M3 RWD and AWD. Since you seem to be in Norway, if you have a chance to take your M3 to a supercharger / high speed charger at some point when it’s sub-zero (the colder the better), I’d really love to know what kinds of charging speeds the M3 RWD is getting in cold. The charging performance of that LFP battery in freezing temperature is a big question mark, and probably the biggest factor that will either make me go for the RWD / AWD. Thanks a bunch! :)
Hello William. I like your car configuration. Enjoy it! If the BYD Blade battery were available in the USA, I tell myself that I would buy this same configuration.
AWD is especially useful in winters with snow, ice and hilly terrain. In a flat country where it rarely freezes during the day, a RWD is more than enough. In a “vision” Tesla in snow and rain I saw that the cameras are of little use. This is also the case in my IONIQ 5, where the radar also fails during snow due to frozen snow. in a BMW I4 the radar is heated. However, the parking sensors continue to work.
48:30 this good to highlight, that stops are every 2:30 hours in NORWAY, whereas in the rest of Europe we've got much higher speed limits, so the stops will occur way more often. battery's great nevertheless, it would be perfect car if it would be mid-range LFP, or Model 3 LFP Blade
The U.S. 2024 RWD has 2170 Panasonic batteries that are just limited to more range. It also has less speakers and no fog lights. However, the do have HW4. The other issue with the RWD it takes longer to precondition, but does charge faster after 50% state of charge. For the price in the US right now the RWD is super cheap after the federal tax credit of 7,500. Basically you can get a 2024 RWD for approximately $35,000. The LR & Performance models also have awesome deals.
Nice. I wish we could get that configuration in the USA. It seems that Tesla just doesn't want to put an LFP battery in the Model Y RWD... I assume because it would lose the $7500 tax credit. I have a M3 RWD that has the CATL LFP pack... I love it.
My small suggestion for your editing, if you may. When you have long monologs, like in this video - the tunnel sequence, it would look much smoother if you detach the audio from the video track and cut it off just the audio, leaving the video track running smoothly above. Nobody would see or know that but you would eliminate the jerky chops. I think that would improve the overall watching experience. Just a small tip from my experience. Always fun to watch your videos, cheers! With today's interest rates deal for model Y in Norway, it's a steal :)
Love the video ! The scenery looks amazing. A Norway road trip will be on my to do list, with a Model Y of course. I am in Australia and just got a BYD Seal with a 82Kw blade battery... Hohoho...what a amazing battery. Its a shame Model Y in Australia doesn't come with BYD battery : (
@RoamingNorway You probably know this, but remember that new studded winter tires should be driven under 80km/h the first 300 - 500km (the first 50km is 'critical'). And avoid hard acceleration/breaking. That is if you want to keep the 'studs' as much as possible for future use/seasons.
The light beam on the right tunnel wall explains why Teslas driving in the opposite direction often blind me with their right hand headlight. Never had this spread of light in any of my cars. The light should be pointing slightly down. Nice video. I was wondering how the traction of the RWD was in snowy conditions
Yes even the awd Tesla's are rwd unless alot of power is used or grip starta to loosen. There is one slight exception - model 3 LR awd. With acc. boist sends alot of power to the front wheels. Just on wet road you can get it to slip out of a corner - even power slide on all 4 for a short while.
But I think this is newer models only. At least something has happened, because the AWD i my Model 3 LR (early-2021 Fremont model from Dec. 2020 with 580km WLTP) feels different compared to newer cars. I have yet to make my car slip even in snow, while newer cars I have tried seem to slip even on wet roads. Front end on newer cars also feels more unstable during acceleration imo. Got the acc. boost in 2023, but dont feel a difference in the AWD, only the aggressiveness. I also noticed this January, when we got a lot of snow in my area that people with LR Model Ys got stuck with their rear wheels and their cars didnt pull on the front wheels.

Nice video! I am wondering how Blade LFP battery behaves in cold temperatures + long downhills. From my experience with M3 2021 MIC LFP, battery usually "saturates" and regen braking decreases notably after recharging the battery for some seconds/km. Did you observe something similar while going down the mountain?
I have not experienced any problems in hills. Maybe it us too flat where I live. However when the battery is cold soaked after a night in some minus Celsius, there is no regen at all without pre-conditioning. When it is a couple of plus outside you get some usable regen from start. Of course if you just charged to 100% also that doesn't help. I don't know if the CATL battery is better in the cold?

What are your thoughts about that? If I take delivery before the end of march there is also a pretty nice deal in regards of the interest. Will the TMY rwd be discontinued, “much” more expensive etc. just curious on your thoughts 👍
Juniper will most likely be a huge seller for Tesla. A lot of the updates that were made to the Model 3, fit better in the Y in my opinion. For me, there was no choice waiting, and the Y is currently a fantastic package, but if you want to wait for comfort, go for it.
Unfortunately my Model Y came from Shanghai with CATL battery I couldn't choose it , anyway it's an amazing car and charging sessions are not bad at all .
I think that Bjørn's 1000km challenge shows that the Model Y RWD is so fast and efficient that the road is the limiting factor. The CATL version got a faster time than the BYD version because he used the faster roads on the Sweden route for that one. Charging time is really not a practical issue any more with these cars, especially not when travelling on slowish roads like in Sweden and Norway. If you hammer on the Autobahn, sure, then you might want a bigger battery and higher charging speed to make up for the consumption.

Great to hear! They have Matrix lights installed but it is not yet made available with software, and it might never be. The headlights are pretty good regardless.
tnx for the reply. I really enjoyed your video's about the charging of the byd blad battery. As far as I know the one I ordered (delivery date 16/3) will have the byd blade battery, so i am really excited.
@@RoamingNorway Thats insanely quick. Did you choose a preconfigured car? I ordered mine the 18th of Jan. According to the app I was supposed to get mine within 2nd of Feb, but the counter went away two days ago. Figured its because of the delay in parts at the Berlin factory
NMC starts faster, but goes quickly downhill, compared to BYD battery which keeps a stably (lower) charge for longer. Thus adding just a much charge in the same time. You can see it by comparing the total charge 'surface'.
I can't find any other sources on the suggestion you've made that the production of Tesla Model Y RWD standard version could be CATL instead of BYD batteries. According to what i've read (mainly german forums, articles) is that ALL germand produced (XP7 in VIN) Model Y have the BYD since it's a complete different build. Can't imagine that they mix two different builds? How are you so sure, whats your source?
I have seen cars with the FS in the VIN have the much slower, and exact charging curve as CATL. They started using CATL batteries from Giga Berlin very recently, it was BYD only up to around fall 2023. There are also multiple reports on this.
If you charge an lfp over night up to 100% you will pay less. Long Range will go the same distance charged up to 80%. But will cost more. I own a Tesla Model 3 RWD. The LR will be a better choice only if you are limited to SuC.
Please note that the new Model S and X are superior in charging speeds to this BYD blade battery. They hold speeds of over 250kw for a very long time and deliver far more kilowatts in the same time frame as this model. Yes, this battery is smaller and feels like its very fast (and it is compared to other LFP Teslas) and this charging is absolutely fantastic for LFP, but it's far from the best charging Tesla. And even an 800v Kia EV6 delivers nearly 30% more kilowatts than this EV in the same time frame. You can watch Bjorn's comparison to see this. This feels faster because of the smaller battery size and indeed is very impressive for such a small battery, but 800v and other chemistries are still significantly faster. For example, the new Taycan stays at over 300kws to 65% SoC. With that said, I love this charging curve.
There are better charging EVs, but this one is way more efficient than EV9 and significantly more than S & X. So it’ll drive much further than those, given the same amount of energy in the battery.
@@RoamingNorway Correct. Point taken. I understand that. Those are heavier vehicles. Even the EV6. I was just referring to your comment that this was the best charging Tesla. But I would also say that the new Model S is not that far off as far as it's efficiency. It can get around 400 miles or 640 kilometers even though it's heavier. I understand it's not a small SUV like the Y, but it's as large or ever slightly larger overall. And you can almost get as much stuff in it with that large hatchback trunk opening.
From what I have seen and experienced on the Model S Palladium, it does not charge better than this one. It holds 250 kW for longer than the the ones before, but still only to around 30%. This one can get 175 kW when you plug in at 50%, where Palladium gets 140 kW and dropping fast. Model S wins on looks though! @@Paul-cj1wb

I am not sure if they make right hand drive vehicles yet. I assume they will at some point to avoid shipping all the way from China. The China and German vehicles should be comparable now. The early ones had a few QC issues. I do think the German one should be a little bit better in terms of quality control
Thanks for your reply Will Chinese teslas have all the up grades that German cars have, that you talked about in your videos Like , Lfp blade battery, latested software, premium sound, and all the other up grades? Cheers Paul

Yes, preconfigured. @@OverEntusiast
Why is this the best charging Tesla ? Didnt you mention towards the end that the NMC/NCA charges faster (which I would also expect).
@@RoamingNorwayok i wish i hadnt seen this becaus i have ordered an ‘FS’ apparentally 😢.
Can’t back out here.
Still a great car with a LFP battery. Maybe also better hot weather performance (I have yet to test it)@@Xavii1986
@RoamingNoryway yes please, test the LFP de Shanghai if you have the oportunity
great video. sadly, here in the US the MY RWD only comes with lithium batteries (which makes them qualify for the $7500 tax rebate).
Yes, your batteries are software locked.
not bad test but most people don't use studded tires
Was you not tempted to go for Highland over Model Y?
Not for this car. Needed stalks, and wanted a taller car. Battery tech is better here too.

Hi There
Great videos
Do you know that only left hand drive tesla come out of the German factory,
So right hand drive come from China I think
What do think of Chinese tesla, vs German made tesla?
Cheers
Paul from Ireland
I am not sure if they make right hand drive vehicles yet. I assume they will at some point to avoid shipping all the way from China. The China and German vehicles should be comparable now. The early ones had a few QC issues. I do think the German one should be a little bit better in terms of quality control
Thanks for your reply
Will Chinese teslas have all the up grades that German cars have, that you talked about in your videos
Like , Lfp blade battery, latested software, premium sound, and all the other up grades?
Cheers
Paul
The Chinese cars only ship with the LFP CATL battery, not the BYD one. Aside from that, it should have all the upgrades. @@noeleenobrien6145
Merhaba, araç HW3 mü, HW+ mü?
HW3
The battery part of the manual is actually Catalan, not Spanish. Curious it randomly appeared in my language 😂
No idea 😂
the RWD model has a "budget" sound system and speakers, since I love music in the car I would choose the Long range model, which has a premium sound system.
Not in Europe. It has the full system
You don't talk about the regen when it's cold outside. It's very important for me as I live in alps mountains with steep roads and not having regen would be a very bad point.
The regen is reduced (both due to cold, and having just one motor), but is still there.
@@RoamingNorway thanks because simplement julien made a test on swiss alps with lfp model 3 and he told me taht there was no regen at all when battery is cold.
The BYD battery should be better from what I have heard. It does not coldgate as easily. @@SebastienChedalBornu
@@RoamingNorway thx
How can he know there’s blade batteries in his car
You can watch my video before this one to find out. It has been known for around 7 months now that Giga Berlin started using these.
@@RoamingNorway I don’t think that’s real, there’s no any tear down shot until now
Doesn't matter. The ES VIN chargers way faster than the FS and the China model. So there are better batteries. @@jameswoolf1440
