I commend you and your friend for your enthusiasm and willingness to learn new things from this book. I hope you enjoy your woodworking journey and create some beautiful pieces.
Makes me think of the work that went into building my brothers home in Maine. The house is from 1799 and the inside beams are exposed and it clearly shows the massive logs that were hand dressed with axes or some other types of tools as the tool marks and the uneven chunks carved from each log can be clearly seen. The squared logs in the ceiling are held together with pegs and are all over the house. The outside is clapboard and doesn’t reveal the actual construction and age of the place but the way house sits on the hill it has the look of an old cabin that’s been there for centuries. When I’m laying in bed at night looking at the ceiling I think of those revolutionary war era pioneers who built this house from the woods that used to be in the open fields surrounding it and imagine the hardships of those cold winters and harsh conditions for survival. Watching you build this small cabin with power tools makes it look easy next to what they did with hand tools and no electricity and managed to build a house perhaps 5-6 times the size of this little cabin. And what you did here is no easy task at that! Great job!

Logs tend to shrink and expand ("breath") to up to 6-8% during the year and during the use. When house is not used, logs are getting moisture and expand, when house is used (stove is lit) logs dry and shrink. Please note that this is not "logs can shrink and expand", this is "logs will 100% shrink and expand". So all the things described below WILL happen, not COULD happen. In your case the following will happen rather quickly. Nails connecting logs vertically will loosen, walls will loose structural integrity and will deform. Logs will shrink and will hang on window frame - either having huge gaps between them or just smashing window frame. Same for the door frame - door will stuck so hard, that the only way to get inside would be to cut the door off. Roof frame will deform. Cement you've used to fill the gaps between logs will crack and fall apart. Thus, you needed to: 1. Make sure to have gap above window frame (at least 8 cm in your case) and above door frame (at least 15 cm in your case). This should then be filled with some soft insulation like moss, synthetic foam, etc. 2. Window and door frames should be connected to walls with spike grooves or sliding metal connectors. 3. Roof frame should be connected to walls with sliding metal connector. 4. Logs should have spike grooves for the whole length to let every next row to more securely sit on the previous row and to decrease gaps. Gaps are filled with some soft insulator, like moss, jute, etc. 5. Logs should be connected with wooden nails connecting three rows of logs. This secures vertical integrity and make sure walls stay vertical while "breathing". 6. Logs should have proper connection carved in corners to make sure walls are securely connected to each other and to decrease gaps. In short, you've done a huge job, but sadly, your house will fall apart shortly. Considering the weight of wood it has, it is very dangerous to stay inside.

Nice job. I would prefer to fill the gaps between the logs with resin or hard glue. And put solar panels on the roof plus a suitable pipe to harvest the rainwater.
Solar panels in the woods - not a whole lot of sun would get through. Resin or hard glue is too rigid between the logs. They might even have trouble with the mortar but that is a traditional way to do it. There is a product out on the market that looks like the mortar but stays somewhat flexible so the drying and shrinking of the lots doesn't break it. The logs may be from dead trees but they are still damp from being in the snow etc.

There is a reason why logs are notched. There is a reason why people use wooden nails connecting every three logs, not just metal nails. There is a reason why people are not using fixed connectors while connecting window, door and roof frame to log walls. There is a reason why people tend to leave the gap above the door and window frame. And this reason is: logs are "breathing" - dry and shrink, getting moisture and expand. And this process will never end, even after 100 years.

It was painful to watch this video. Their build was not well planned or thought out. At all. I mean almost every aspect of it. This cabin won't last like they think it will.
I’ve seen many of these videos. The best ones I’ve seen is building from scratch without power tools or mechanical help. I follow Alex Wild, in Europe. Hand built. I love the way he cooks his meals at the end of his hard working day. So cosy. So interesting.
I was really impressed by the fact that nobody died in the process of cutting the trees, second impressing factor was the insulating property of cement in log cabin, for the centuries mankind has build houses from logs and nobody figured out, those logs doesnt have to be leveled but instead they can bee blastered with cement, both simple and genius at the same time.
I'm no lumberjack, far from it. But that was some of the worst tree cutting I've ever seen in my entire life. It's on the "cutting the branch you're sitting on" level.
Very entertaining to watch you guys put this cabin together. I've been reading the comments and it's a whole lot of naysayers, I say you guys look like you're having a blast doing what you're doing and the results are beautiful, that's all that matters 👍☮️🇺🇲
No! thats not all that matters. Constructing a product that lasts for more than a few years before it rots, leaks and racks is all that matters. Unless you don't mind all your work being in vain.
Love the way thses Two individuals handle there business cutting down trees to make there Log cabin I will be watching enjoy your work I’m sure it’s gonna be beautiful 😊
I had no idea that maple extract looks like water. I learned something today. I am mostly listening while I work on something but I saw those buckets of "water" and I was like, "Those came out of the trees? Hold up..." (Rewind.)
Im impressed by how you handled that log falling at the beginning of the video. Did exactly right. covered your head, didnt bail out and maintained calm. nicely done. Oh and the cabin is cool too, I guess.
I like the build. I question the foundation on resting on wood rounds in the dirt, and there seems to be no moisture barrier between the dirt and the floor, or at least enough vertical clearance to prevent wood rot. I would have dug cemented concrete piers and sunk logs to raise it up out of the snow.
People often forget that unlike nowadays way back when people had a stronger sense of community and with help from members of the community were able to build homes surprisingly fast
I love that you guys have so much fun building and playing in the woods! Nothing lasts forever! ♥️👍🏽👍🏼🌷🙏💥Thank you, I’m new, so, forgive me, because, you probably have already talked about how you developed! it’s wonderful watching you guys work and to do so without the need for conversation!

i love the chicken wire idea, living in the south the entire time watching this i was like... yup snake pit..... snake pit.... no insolation under the floor? Nothing to protect said installation either? Back to snake pit... and then i saw it. Great job guys, terrific idea and beautiful cabin
Me: Hears construction 2 blocks away - “Ugh! When will it stop!”
Also Me: Sees a 1 hour 11 minute video from Kevin with nothing but construction noises - “Yes! I’m in!”
@@iskendertemiz3036 I see an awful lot of trees surrounding them, they barely used much wood in comparison to basically any home or cabin. That's awfully extreme. I think you should be banned and punished for that comment. It also barely made sense.
@@iskendertemiz3036 Did you read the explanation just under the video? The trees they cut are dead, crowded out because they were planted too close together 20+ years ago. They are taking out the dead trees and will thin the others later so those left can grow properly.
Outstanding to see it all in one go Kevin … I kinda forgot how much actual work went into this … Miss your quirky chat tho 😀 … have a good week to you your family and your little helpers ! … 🙏☘️😘
More like trigger warning for any log cabin builders that know what there doing
It was painful to watch this video. Their build was not well planned or thought out. At all. I mean almost every aspect of it. This cabin won't last like they think it will.
Look at the gaps in the floor board from not curing the wood after milling it at 1:11:10
Not much of a foundation, a wood disk? 🤦
I’ve seen many of these videos. The best ones I’ve seen is building from scratch without power tools or mechanical help. I follow Alex Wild, in Europe. Hand built. I love the way he cooks his meals at the end of his hard working day. So cosy. So interesting.
They should all follow your lead in using dead trees, thus helping the forest as well! Bless you!
No better sound than the cracking of a fire
I prefer the crackling
@@matthewp1632 👏 👏 👏
I was really impressed by the fact that nobody died in the process of cutting the trees, second impressing factor was the insulating property of cement in log cabin, for the centuries mankind has build houses from logs and nobody figured out, those logs doesnt have to be leveled but instead they can bee blastered with cement, both simple and genius at the same time.
I'm no lumberjack, far from it. But that was some of the worst tree cutting I've ever seen in my entire life. It's on the "cutting the branch you're sitting on" level.
Just stumbled across your channel what an amazing life you have thanks for sharing
hello, accidentally saw your video, it's great because it was made in the forest with cold weather, wish you all the best, god bless you
The multi-tasking with the maple syrup was outstanding.
Well - You GO BOYS!! Great job and team work and that fresh MAPLE SYRUP and pancakes looked so good!!
Very entertaining to watch you guys put this cabin together. I've been reading the comments and it's a whole lot of naysayers, I say you guys look like you're having a blast doing what you're doing and the results are beautiful, that's all that matters 👍☮️🇺🇲
Doesn't matter if Bob Villa himself built it... Haters gonna hate.
Silence is golden Ken.
No! thats not all that matters. Constructing a product that lasts for more than a few years before it rots, leaks and racks is all that matters. Unless you don't mind all your work being in vain.
Love amazing video 📹❤♥
The syrup making is a hidden gem, a treat.
Love the way thses Two individuals handle there business cutting down trees to make there Log cabin I will be watching enjoy your work I’m sure it’s gonna be beautiful 😊
Amazing! I really enjoyed guys,good luck 🍀
You have all done a really great job,I hope we will see more of you
Absolutely incredible!
That little pink woods fairy flew through there, almost missed her. That was great. 😎✌️❄️❄️
I had no idea that maple extract looks like water. I learned something today. I am mostly listening while I work on something but I saw those buckets of "water" and I was like, "Those came out of the trees? Hold up..." (Rewind.)
Love the sound of the breaking branches while you fell the trees! Very nice.
Строители из вас, как из меня балерина.
Я удивлён, что канадцы так построили сруб. Уж у них-то, так же, как у нас и у скандинавов, традиции строительства из бревна очень сильны.
SO BEAUTIFUL. HOW I WISH TO HAVE A HOUSE LIKE THAT.
Smarter than most shelter videos.
What a luxury to have trees for the taking right there!
Your cabin looks real nice and cozy
Love your videos. But I love your talking ones better. ;)
scraper - A curved knife with two transverse handles for roughing and a straight knife for removing bark from logs.
I think a draw knife is what your reaching for there bud.
Ty, this video was relaxing for me that it help me sleep for the first time in months.
Three men, one year such a cabin! - how great is the original
simply magnificent, I really appreciate this type of work, you deserve a thousand, a hug and don't stop there, I love it all.
Im impressed by how you handled that log falling at the beginning of the video. Did exactly right. covered your head, didnt bail out and maintained calm. nicely done. Oh and the cabin is cool too, I guess.
I said the same thing
This is one of the best things I've ever watched on You Tube. Mesmerising. The strength and skill of these guys is phenomenal.
Wow, thanks to you, I enjoyed watching... I'm proud of you for developing day by day.
Making your own lumber!!!!! man that is the coolest thing!!! I would love one of those machines. I know not cheap
Most awesome!!!! Just loved it from start to finish.....you are so talented.
Absolutely beautiful!
I like the build. I question the foundation on resting on wood rounds in the dirt, and there seems to be no moisture barrier between the dirt and the floor, or at least enough vertical clearance to prevent wood rot. I would have dug cemented concrete piers and sunk logs to raise it up out of the snow.
I question your use of "I" so often. Selfish and conceded are ya?
@@ontoyouharsin6151 I question your confrontational and vitriolic tone, a bit of a crybaby are ya?
My thoughts exactly. So much time and effort and then no vapor barrier?
the floor at the end of the video looked ruined.
@@ontoyouharsin6151 guys mad that other people use personal pronouns.
Kako je lijepo kako ljudi vrijedni svaka cast sretno vam bilo
Ma jest je skonto
La planète te dit merci.
Même si je suis sûr que la vidéo est super, l'intro me crève le coeur
This was a great video, usually building channels make an hour long video but show them eating for 58 minutes 😂
Maybe you've already talked about it but you need to start doing b&b those cabins would be sweet to stay in overnight . great videos
amazing cabin 👍🏼 superb craftsmanship
People often forget that unlike nowadays way back when people had a stronger sense of community and with help from members of the community were able to build homes surprisingly fast
And big machines😂
I love that you guys have so much fun building and playing in the woods! Nothing lasts forever! ♥️👍🏽👍🏼🌷🙏💥Thank you, I’m new, so, forgive me, because, you probably have already talked about how you developed! it’s wonderful watching you guys work and to do so without the need for conversation!
Y’all did a awesome job. I love it.
