I think the story is true and I have a theory: deadly gases leaked from the cargo killing all the crew members. If you watch a documentary of the affects of WWII gases on soldiers it fits almost exactly with the description of the dead crewmen. That would also explain the deadly explosion that took place shortly after. And if that gas was also a nerve-agent then maybe that would further explain how the bodies began to rapidly decompose.
True - but if there were gasses, why weren't the crew members who jumped on board affected by said gasses. I mean - gasses must've been present if it exploded. Just food for thought.
@@svenberkard5874 That's a good point although its still possible since the gases might have been leaked as the ship was on its trip and killed everyone but by the time the rescuer's got there the gases had been diffused into the sourounding airspace by the wind.
Unfortunately there are no shipping record, dock master/harbor records or manifest that would prove this was a real ship. In the suns heat your lips will recede very quickly, making your face and body look pretty scary, First they puff up then melt into the deck due to the hot sun and steel. You always want to stay UP wind when you find a body at sea until the Coast Guard get there. It's a smell you just can't explain but you will Never forget. Plus, being a Captain for over 45 years Crew members love to drink and brag about where they are going whenever your at the dock, they will tell anyone who will listen, where they just came from and what they are carrying. Many Captains will anchor off shore in a safe place after loading so they don't loose any of their crew members after a night of hitting the bars and drinking. In many places it's hard to find a replacement and even if you do they normally aren't the best or they would already be part of some other ships crew. If you have ever visited the Florida Keys and the weather isn't the best you will see many Shrimp boats anchored just off shore for this very reason. Crewmen get drunk then don't show up when it's time to head out to sea again. You want to try and keep the same crew as you already know what their habits at sea while working are. I have always wished this was a true mystery. but, there is not a single factor that lines up with this ship or any ship under that name during that time period.
Yeah...it mysterious "disappeared"... The Dutch, English, or US definitely took the opportunity to nab this ship up and blame it on "ghosts"... Sounds like a UDT mission to me lol

I've been bingewatching your videos for quite a while and by watching these older videos I can say: you became ASTRONOMICALLY better at telling stories in just 2 years! it's so impressive. since these first videos you were already a great storyteller, but you simply became the best.
Okay, no kind of expert by any means, but when I first heard about this years ago my first thought was about how you would have transported gasses at that time. It would have been in large glass sealed bottles. My father used to have one with either in it. One of the bottles could have been either accidentally or on purpose broken and the ship would have quickly filled with deadly gas. It would have traveled up through the hold killing anyone it came in contact with who breathed it for even a moment, but would most likely weigh less than oxygen. In the hours it took the Silver Star to intercept the gas would have risen up into the atmosphere and every trace would be gone. The ship was at a standstill so when they began pulling it the ship would have jolted forward, causing the fragile cargo to slide and several more bottles to break simultaneously. Any spark could have lit them causing the entire shipment to explode.
@@dreadheaddavid4207 In truth, they probably didn’t. They fell on the floor and died with their hands outs in front of them; on their side. As the boat drifted in rough seas and after rigor mortise set in the bodies rolled onto their back.
I was basically listening through all your stories, this one I find kinda fascinating is because the title “SS Ourang Medan” quickly caught my attention, cause I’m born from Medan (Indonesia), and “ourang medan” meaning people of Medan. Now I was in the shipping business for over a decade, most vessels in Indonesia arent registered under Llyod, in fact you will be surprised to find most older vessel not probably registered even within the local water. The company vessels that I was working for, the main route was going through up and down from Jakarta to Medan. And I often hear all these mystic stories from the captain how strange the straits of Malacca can be. The pirates and weather etc. Back to your story tho, the most fsacinating thing is why all crew members (except the one on the radio) were all “facing up” prior before their death. Something really scary, may it be human, weather, or out of the ordinary must have caused their death. Anyway, I guess it will be one of the many mystery at seas. Really enjoy your stories..and thumbs up!!
H.K Thanks for commenting. Not many comments on here about the actual story, just about how good MrBallen is. But anyway, your comment gives a lot of atmosphere to the story, it's great 👍 The thing that puzzled me was how their arms remained in the air when they died. I would assume arms would sink to the floor on death. Unless rigor Mortis happened instantly that is. But they did say decomposition was far advanced for the timescale, so things seemed to have happened over an unusual escalated period. Thanks for adding something to the story! 👍
@@vmm5163 Yeah right! I thought as soon as I heard it surely their arms would slump to their sides. That adds a whole other twist to the story. I can't wrap my head around it.
The issue is the lack of evidence. There's just this story, but no written records of the call, or anything written about the rescue/tow attempt, like in the Silver Star logbooks...
Fascinating story. Was anything ever investigated under the water, ship remains, etc? Also, what about the families of the supposed crew members. If there was an entire crew that died, wouldn't their be families that would have been asking about them, or reporting them missing at sea? I'd love to find more about this and what was done to investigate it afterward. Thanks for sharing!
Id also love to know more. On the ship wreck part tho, unlikely. The ocean is really darn big. The majority of ships that sink in deep waters, we just never see again. Even if you have rather accurate coordinates, there is a lot of inaccuracy in actually finding the ship, and even if you do, getting to it depending on the depth.
So far, no efforts have been made to dig up the wreck, but since Malacca strait is rather thin and shallow, it's not impossible. Maybe one day deep-divers will actually find it.
i love how he's casually like "i was a navy seal for a lil while" like he didnt go through literal torture to achieve one of the most astonishing accomplishments ever 🤣
When a body is in the presence of great heat, the musculature in the arms (and to a lesser extent, the legs) contracts - pulling the arms into the characteristic "pugilistic" (fighting) pose. It makes sense that the dog would assume the same position, as it's musculature is not that much different from a person's. The heat that caused the pugilistic pose may also account for the accelerated decomposition of the bodies.
some kind of nerve gas would explain the position the bodies were found in, it's called 'fencing response' and it happens when the brainstem is damaged, and a gas leak would also explain the explosion. the Silver Star crew likely just wasn't on the boat long enough for it to affect them.
OMG, his storytelling style has changed so much already. I was here for this originally and it seemed good at the time (still is engaging now), but nowadays it seems passionate but amateur, unsure, even a little awkward. He's so much more confident now!
@@simonspacek3670 I started watching because I liked this pub guy style. But, it has been nearly 4 years, so here I am back in the beginning. 😊
I'm Indonesian and I've never heard of this story (perhaps my parents'/grandparents' generations have). But the minute I saw that the boat was named Ourang Medan, I was like... Wouldn't be surprised if it's true. The timeline of its finding seems to be centred around the time Indonesia was gaining its independence (different sources seem to cite different years). If it's prior to the independence, we'd be a mess and a half under the Japanese occupation, & if it's right after, we'd be a mess and a half trying to stand up on our own whilst still being fought over by the Dutch. So nevermind ship records; people, entire families, entire villages have been known to not be recorded anywhere. Not to mention how rampant piracy and illegal activities in general were at the time (when a region is in chaos, it seems to be prime time for both locals and foreigners to try and take advantage of the situation). So the thought of an illegal operation ending up in an untraceable tragedy isn't all that surprising. Especially since way crazier things have happened in Indonesia. Also, for those who are interested, Ourang (or orang) is pronounced 'oh-rung', and Medan, the city, is pronounced 'Meh-dahn' (like May without the 'y' and dahn almost like 'done').
A year ago I heard this story from Hirotada Radifan's channel: th-cam.com/video/gf5xLN34S3w/w-d-xo.html Then today I heard the details from Mr. Ballen 😐

The arm position is related to asphyxiation in death, it happens when you take people off ventilation. Moving the ship disturbed the bilge and caused the reaction of chemistry to continue. Mixed oils and chemicals can actually settle as separate inside a ship's bilge. If the ship was completely becalmed and the pumps weren't running it can re-dissolve all sorts of things that would otherwise never come into contact with each other. The symptoms stated are consistent with fluorine compounds.

Welcome to the club Flooflymoo. When I was young I heard the story of The Jersey Devil. It fascinated me. I’ve loved the dark & creepy ever since. Now I’m late forty’s.
Chemicals were my first thought, too. I was thinking of what I once heard about the coolant ammonia. Breathing in this stuff is said to be so extremely painful, that people cannot even think of finding the exit of the room in which it is spreading. So maybe the position of the corpses with their hands up like fighting someone off was evidence of them trying to "chase away" the gas around them.
I will give an analysis of my interpretation of this case. The first mention comes from 1948. The first US mention comes from the early 1950's, at least four years later. The Proceedings of the Merchant Marine Council, the publication of the USCG that contains this story, came in 52. The idea that the USCG would have any firsthand knowledge of a ship off the coast of Indonesia is far-fetched, and they were likely just repeating from another source. What I find interesting is that the first published source claims that there was a survivor who was rescued by local islanders, and that man supposedly said that they had a cargo of sulphuric acid which created fumes that killed everyone else. And this is the original source. That source does not give the name of the ship. Even more interesting is that the source claims the event occurred 400 miles southeast of the Marshall Islands. That is decidedly nowhere close to Indonesia or Sumatra. It is near Tonga, Fiji, French Polynesia, etc, in the South Pacific. Completely different ocean. That fact alone tells us that the story has likely been really messed up, like a game of telephone played by one-eyed monkeys with learning disabilities. If this wasn't the original source then perhaps I wouldn't give so much credence to the report, but it just seems that someone tried to embellish the story and everyone else just repeated it. And the name does apparently loosely translate as MrBallen said, which implies that it originated from the Indonesian area, but that is at odds with the original story. So I'm inclined to believe that if it happened, it happened the non-mysterious way that the original described.
My brother. I’ve been watching you for years and this 1 got by me. Grateful that after this video and the others in the past 3 years. Thank you. Please, as you’ve done already, keep the videos coming. Thanks man.

I have always wished this was a true mystery. but, there is not a single factor that lines up with this ship or any ship under that name during that time period.

Any spark could have lit them causing the entire shipment to explode.
dang thats some in depth analysis!
@@MrBallen i read your comment but i imagined it in the voice of joe dirt
And why all the people look terrified holding their hands up .?
@@dreadheaddavid4207 In truth, they probably didn’t. They fell on the floor and died with their hands outs in front of them; on their side. As the boat drifted in rough seas and after rigor mortise set in the bodies rolled onto their back.
@@sgtdh6892 that makes sense as a possibility too. Good thought
It's Loyd I believe.
H.K Thanks for commenting. Not many comments on here about the actual story, just about how good MrBallen is.
But anyway, your comment gives a lot of atmosphere to the story, it's great 👍
The thing that puzzled me was how their arms remained in the air when they died.
Hey it's like the Philadelphia Experiment, no proof but well known.......
I'm glad Mr. Ballen is on TH-cam otherwise i would've never discovered him and his awesome, creepy and disturbingly good videos!
Same. I dont use social media much, but love glancing at youtube on occasion. 4 days later I'm still listening to catch up. 🤣
Just a nonsense story. Dont take it seriously.
That's what I was thinking too about family members!!

So some kind of heat beam had hurt them.
I disagree
I agree🤗👍. 🙏🌍✌️🇺🇸
@@christopherwalsh7700 You literally can't. Everything he said was objective fact. Lol
@@mr.jameson218 but I do and in turn, disagree with you as well.
some kind of nerve gas would explain the position the bodies were found in, it's called 'fencing response' and it happens when the brainstem is damaged, and a gas leak would also explain the explosion. the Silver Star crew likely just wasn't on the boat long enough for it to affect them.
Or the gases had just dissipated by the time the other ship got there
Animals react in same way ? Like this dog?
@@adamnowak7538 I mean- dogs are also living beings who breathe air and are affected by toxic gases

OMG, his storytelling style has changed so much already. I was here for this originally and it seemed good at the time (still is engaging now), but nowadays it seems passionate but amateur, unsure, even a little awkward. He's so much more confident now!
He is, but I like this old style too. He sounds like some guy in a pub, telling a cool story.
@@simonspacek3670 I started watching because I liked this pub guy style. I feel like his confidence and business-like reporter style gives him almost too much credibility that is definitely not backed by fact-checking or professionalism in the stories he tells. I used to be so excited when I saw he'd uploaded, but now I don't even get notified anymore. He feels a bit too standard true crime TH-camr. But, it has been nearly 4 years, so here I am back in the beginning. 😊
It’s so cute to see how far along Mr Ballen has come with his storytelling. He’s amazing now!
Also, for those who are interested, Ourang (or orang) is pronounced 'oh-rung', and Medan, the city, is pronounced 'Meh-dahn' (like May without the 'y' and dahn almost like 'done').
not oh. but O. O-rung. Oh sounds "ouh".

Yooo what, I didn’t expect you to upload today but thanks for keeping us entertained with these great videos. Keep up the good work bro

The Medan was smuggling a LOT of deadly chemicals. The containers broke with the motion of the ocean. All dead.
That is the most plausible explanation it makes perfect sense and people that die from certain gases well their muscles contract which could explain the arms
How do you know?
Jason Ragadio I think he was just geussing
@@chipsthedog1 I was really puzzling over the arms, I thought surely the arms would sink to the floor at the point of death. Your info is interesting 👍
This is the first time I’ve ever heard him NOT come up with a brutality for the like button

Man of Medan
glad you came back in one piece. love your stories, (even though i know a lot of them... im dark like that)
This has easily become my favorite TH-cam channel very quickly. It would be awesome to hear you cover a story of The Philadelphia Experiment. It’s probably one of the creepiest and most fascinating mysteries involving a military ship. Great story.
No one gonna point out his incredible memory ? He never appears to be reading from anything. His eyes wander all over. He's retelling the stories from his memory. Cool
His eyes dart to bottom left to check notes 😂 but he does it very well
@@MackerelCat Oh really? I didn't notice. Yes extremely well.
@@MackerelCat You can still tell he memorized most of it though because he just barely glances.
Yes I’ve been waiting for this vid ur the best ballen!!
Thanks for all your TH-cam stuff I watch all your videos keep up the great work
I'm guessing this mystery ship was one of the inspirations for the Ghost Ship movie. Those who picked up the distress signal knew for certain that the signal was coming from a ship as was confirmed by the search crew. Kind of reminds me of the Mary Celeste discovery and aftermath of the salvage crew.
This is a new one for me and got me curious. Thanks for the vid.
"It's a fascinating story and I hope you took something from it."
Yeah--nightmares... 😱
If anyone has played the game “Man of Medan” this is what its based off of.
(Very fun horror game you can play with a friend)
(Made by the same people who made “Until Dawn”)
Played it with my friend when it came out fun as hell !
@@orlynnnn do you know if its on xbox?
@@jeseuschrist2508 it's on ps4 so it should be
Orgasskye PSN correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t all the spooky shit a result of a gas leak? I might be wrong because I only watched FaZe Jevs series of the game
Paiton Belk yea it was a chemical gas leak
You are living Legend , MRBallen ! All well to you!
I LOVE that Mr. Ballen doesn't make his content all based or biased on his or popular opinions but rather gives us (his audience) the facts and leaves it up to our own interpretation. Too many other YTers insistent that it's the way they think it happened and no other options lol
What I’ve learned from Mr Ballen is that Hollywood has never had an original horror story. They adapted every single one from real life events and others’ stories
I love MRBALLEN!!! Gets me through my day at work with all the awesome story accounts. Thank you!
That storie was a lot more scary then I thought it was going to be.lol Mr B has that voice were I can sit and just picture what he's saying ahhhhhh goosebumps hardcore lol.
right on!!!
Okay, I've researched the Ourang Medan story and simply cannot find any reliable information that the ship actually existed. I'm now convinced that this is an urban legend.
I don’t remember who posted it, but there’s another version of this story here on TH-cam and their conclusion was urban legend, and they backed it up with good evidence.
they actually made a game of off this called “man of medan” it’s really good
off of**
I was waiting for someone to mention the game. 🤣🤣
Well, it was alright. Once you knew it was just a hallucination there wasn't any threat, and the game became rather dull. It really needed a supernatural threat to have been good, I think.
Yea the story was played with in the game I would presume.
The plot of that game kind of reminds me of the Red Dwarf episode Back to Reality.
Thank you so much for all that you do!!!
Foe me, I listen to your stories while I work & my shift flies by.
