- The attorney of the man identified by investigators as the operator of the boat that hit and killed Ella Riley Adler in Biscayne Bay over the weekend spoke out Wednesday, saying her client is devastated.
Carlos Guillermo Alonso, 78, of Coral Gables, is named as the boater in a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission incident report on the Saturday afternoon crash that killed the 15-year-old.
"This is the worst possible tragedy that anyone could imagine," attorney Lauren Field Krasnoff said.

Why aren't we hearing anything about the driver of the boat that the girl was being towed by? He or she has a big stake in this accident. Towing kids on boards in a high traffic area in choppy water and, as reported, using a boat that is not normal for pulling skiers or wake boards.
Only thing I’ve read is that the tow boat was a bigger vessel with a turning radius not well suited for pulling boarders/skiers.
@@TheSaturnV I heard it was a Fjord. The model is not known.
@@chrisbetts6194It’s a 42 footer. Looked them up. It’s a million dollar day boat. The guy who hit her was in a 350/370 Boston Whaler Realm Also a big boat and a 600-800k boat. Honestly who ever thought it was a good idea to water ski there is an idiot. All real boaters know that.
I believe that is where the guilty party was, was the towing driver drinking, were they tested, 13 people on the boat, any possible distractions, where they following boating laws?
The girls on 2:43 the boards are like pedestrians on the street: they always have the right of way. The other boat that hit her is at fault. And if you're on the water with alot of boat traffic, SLOW DOWN! Quit trying to blame the victim.
I really believe that he had no idea and it was a tragic accident. My prayers and condolences to all concerned.
The chances of ending up in the water while wake boarding are 100%. It sounds like it was a busy waterway.
Yes. That area off Key Biscayne, on a weekend in May with good weather (as it was last weekend), is extremely busy.
Not to mention it sounds like they weren't wakeboarding, but wake surfing with 2 on 1 board. This is probably worse because the wake surfers aren't even necessarily being towed by the boat.
That's why you go to the causeway you know what I'm saying you go to certain bodies of water in Florida where they don't have high boating traffic she should already know that😢
@@MaryHartman-ei9pv if you see the size of that boat towing them I would guess it draws too much water to go in that area- especially getting on plane from a dead stop as the stern digs even lower

@@VeronicaSchneider305 Just curious. Do you know that for a fact? Are there eyewitnesses, cctv etc that show his son was driving the boat at the time of the collision and/or afterwards till he docked the boat? If someone else was on the boat or driving the blue boat, surely it would have been picked up by surveillance cameras after the fact until he docked. If you don't have concrete evidence that the father is covering for the son, it's only speculation on your part.
@DMDbodybuilder I do know that fot a fact. The son is a scumbag and his mugshots/criminal past are public record.
So no one It's going to question the driver of the boat that was pulling Ella?
It was an accident, that’s all it was. It’s hard to see someone in the water operating a small 18 footer much less a large vessel like this one.
No one is contesting it was an accident (assuming the operator wasn't intoxicating or operating the boat in a criminally negligent manner.)
The fundamental crime is running away from the scene of an accident.
@@luisdotespinal Not so on the water with large frame boats. A teen floating in a life vest, her head is barely above water it was reported very choppy so seeing that head, even harder. He needs to be in jail. 🤡💩
does not matter if it was an accident you took someone life so you must face the time!!
Our heart goes out to the family of the poor girl. This accident happened inside a very busy navigational channel where there are dozens of large boats speeding by creating allot of wake and waves. It is very difficult to see a coconut sized head in the waves especially if a boat is on plane. Allowing anyone to go wake boarding or even be in the water in that location is very irresponsible and negligent of the captain of the boat pulling the skier.
I am sure your comment will be followed by a donation to the suspect's defense attorney.
@twistoffate4791 , no one has been charged. The operator towing the wake board is more neglected.
How rude can u be, coconut sized head, clearly u never seen one so u shouldn’t say anything
If it's that crowded you saw down and your head is on a swivel. Nobody should be speeding in a crowded area.
I've owned boats from 12 foot to 40 foot and never had anything close to an accident. Common sense rules
As an avid skier I would want to know a few things like was the area appropriate to have a skier in the water, was the ski boat driver turning back soon enough after the skier fell to circle and protect them and did the skier hold up a ski to identify herself to other boaters? Ski boat operators and skiers have much responsibility.
Good questions!
She was on a wake board and fell off. No skis.
@@mischaraine1645 Man O man I hope you are not on the jury, wakeboard - ski was it held in the air is the relevant question and answer. Was there a "spotter" on the boat and did the spotter call out the fall immediately? Did the boat driver turn immediately to recover the skiier? It is very probable that the operator of the ski boat is quilty of negligent homicide and not the operator of the boat who hit her. There are rules for putting a skiier/wakeboarder in the water.
@@douglasstone3813 Actually, I could be on the jury, as I live in Miami-Dade. I'm certain the attorneys will explain the details of the accident, the boats and the equipment involved, to the jury.
I am not arguing any of your points. But, facts matter. if/when the matter goes to trial, they won't call it a ski.
While this may or may not be the case, all boat drivers are responsible for being fully aware of the activity around them and responsible for being in full control of their own vehicle at all times. I see this as a potential two individuals at fault, but I find it hard to believe that you would not notice hitting something in the water if all the above conditions are being observed.
An important point is that there was not one, but two people in the water. One was closer to the boat. It would be easy to mistake the person close to boat as the only person in the water especially if they had the board. Wakeboarding is usually one person per board, but here there were two people wake surfing on one board.
From the other news stories I've seen it sounds like that is a dangerous place to be wakeboarding and the conditions were bad on top of that. Some of the responsibility certainly lies with the operator of the vessel towing the girl for putting her in that position.
15yr old white girl - old Cuban man - guess who we’re going to go after
This comment section is for grown ups.
there are certain rules meant for public safety that he wasn't following. when you're boating in a bay, you're supposed to go 10mph max to avoid creating a wake and also to avoid any people or animals (manatees!!) that may be in the water because it is a bay. after all. the responsibility does not lay on the operator of ellas boat, rather the old man who was speeding and recklessly driving.
@@michaelashley2855why is everything about race? don't you people get tired of blaming everything on color? your whole world revolves around skin color?
@@c0gimyun So you are saying that the 10 mph applies to the driver who hit the girl, but what about the boat that she was wakeboarding behind? The speed limit is the same, you can’t wakeboard at 10 mph.

If you are towing wakeboarders in an area that is heavily trafficked with high waves that is not an accident. That's negligence. An accident is something you have absolutely NO control over - none.

I learned to water ski before i learned how to ride a bike...you never ski in high traffic areas...the boat operator should always keep an eye on the skier even with a spotter and if skier goes down then the boat operator should get to the skier as soon as possible...skier should always try and grab their ski and hold it up out of the water as much as possible after they fall...its fundamentals in water skiing or wake boarding...a tube is different because it stays with the boat and if you fall off then you are just a little head bobbing in the water camouflaged by the wakes...this is tragic for both sides, especially for the parents of the girl.
You forgot to mention that the law requires a "Skier in the Water Flag". We display one and have another to wave. Then, we have a LOUD air horn in case an approaching boat doesn't seem to notice.

13 people on the boat she had been on?
That sounds like quite a party.
It's an accident. I think the boat could have been inspected by forensics and put right back into the water. The authorities like dramatic scene on the news. The people that decided to use the term, "hit and run" are obviously not knowledgeable about the sounds you hear and the vibrations you feel while operating such a craft. There is lots of stuff in the water constantly hitting the hull. A recent story described some teens dumping thrash into the water. That stuff makes noise when hit. People dump their trash frequently. This is not a "hit and run." People people like to show how little they know. It is tragic, yes, but it is just an accident.
Yes, it was an accident. I honestly believe he didn't realize what had happened. Just the wake from another boat going by makes numerous thumps on the hull of a boat.
It's so easy to lecture when it's NOT you or your daughter getting slaughtered by too large a boat driven by an old man! Your so cavalier.
Judging by the video, the operators height/ posture looks about 5'4" compared to his lawyer. Perhaps had limited visibility from the console and angle of accelerated vessel.
I thought the same thing. That is a very long bow to be looking over which means whatever is inside of the line of sight (possibly hundreds of feet) is not visible to a short person unless the helm deck is elevated.
@@scottalvarez8870 for sure!
Yes I'm sure someone a few inches taller could see soooooo much more.
Bottomline is he is way too old to operate any vehicle
That's why the law requires a skier in the water flag on the tow boat.
There is also a law in Cali that if you are towing a skier (or wake boarder) you are required to have a rear facing observer whose sole job is to keep eyes on said skier/wake boarder while seated next to the boat driver holding an orange or red flag on a staff to raise as soon as the skier falls down to warn other boats that are behind you that there is a skier/wake boarder in the water while also shouting "DOWN!!" to the driver so speed can be cut and a starboard turn can be initiated to pick up the skier/wake boarder in the water.
Wonder if THOSE rules/laws were being followed at the time? Seems like a lot of press on this and the political connections to the Biden family have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with this.
Media is making it sound like this was a malicious event... no doubt he didn't know he hit someone.. that is a big boat... what sounds like she was bobbing in the water .. not up! The towing boat has 99% responsibility with this!!

Most likely that boat never even noticed the contact with a swimmer. A small branch would have made more of a bump then a person in a life vest. Then the meat grinder running behind that boat would have had just a few hundredths of a second and the damage would have been severe.
People in comments section keep saying his son has a record of drinking and driving on boats. Can this be confirmed? Is this man defending his son and taking the blame? People are so quick to condemn. The puller is as responsible.
I bet it was someone else / he’s covering for someone. He can’t hardly walk. How did he dock the boat? Something is fishy.
I would imagine his vision at the age of 80 will be an issue with respect to how it’s possible he didn’t see a person in the water ahead of him, as will his speed at the time of the impact. The argument that it’s a busy, crowded waterway cuts against him as much as it does the skipper of the tow boat.
i am 99% sure this was a accident. but also the person towing the 2 girls should have known. if someone falls off you stop the boat asap and block then with your boat asap. did he stop turn around and try to block them with his/ her boat. or did he/ she just stop. but either way it was a accident. and was the driver of her boat drinking or anything.

What a foolish dangerous stunt. And those Waters, that little girls head would look like a floating coconut. That elderly man had no idea that he hit somebody. If it did, he did this. Just because somebody died, that means somebody has to go to jail. Choose your activities wisely.
It doesn't matter who is driving the boat, I always keep a safe distance from other boats and slow down as necessary especially near people skiing. This could be fault by both sides.
I'm not saying that the driver of the big boat knew he hit someone, but a person of his age and smaller stature driving alone in a 4 engine craft of that size seems unlikely. At the very least, he was way overmatched by his vessel.
So many skippers are way overmatched by their vessels. Their vessels can't be stopped unless they slow down beforehand.

News media is disingenuous.. Calling it a hit and run for the general public that doesn't understand boating. It's hit and run, if you have knowledge that you hit something. The headline should be Terrible Boating Accident. I guess if it bleeds it leads. BY the way there is still the possibility it wasn't even his boat.
That color, on one of the most sold boats (Boston Whaler) is a stock color. I'm sure there were a few more machining that description in that area.
All parties involved in this GROSS NEGLIGENCE should be taken to task. The driver & passengers of the boat pulling the victim - why didn't you raise that red flag that indicates to other boaters there is a person in the water? What exactly was the driver of the boat who killed the victim doing? PAY ATTENTION PEOPLE!!!!! As an experienced mariner, I am still horrified at just how many idiots are out there!! Same thing with automobile drivers--IF YOU CAN'T PARK THE VEHICLE, YOU SURE AS HECK CAN'T DRIVE IT!
So there were 13 people on that boat, which IMO is WAY to many for that boat I bet, and NONE of them had their phone out videoing?
Could they have thought phones are too expensive?
He knew 100%. For days authorities were asking public's help with descriptions that exactly matched his boat. He also knew where the girl was hit so he knew he was boating in the same area at the same time. Yet he never turned himself in and played dumb until he got caught. Now he's playing the old and feeble card for sympathy.
Wow when I first saw the lead in photo, not knowing it was his attorney yet, I though it was Ella's mother, looks like her.
The only way he would not know is if she was just below the surface
