Man amazing how well militaries in the past camouflaged themselves to what we have now. Some of the older styles I think work better in the green than the current styles. Our Grandfathers in arms really did know wtf they were doing.
My wife and I like to watch your video's, she say's it's like playing where's Waldo...In the first scene she say's "there he is", then you fired your rifle, she jumped and say's "oh shit Waldo shot me"...I bout rolled out my chair laughing...great video...keep em' coming...
i really like the aspect of you firing a shot to give away your location. really shows the effectiveness because it puts us in the shoes of the enemy. If we don't see you before the shot we're dead lol
My grandfather was a Para-Commando back in the day. He wore these during their ops in Congo. Later the elite 1st (now called the SFG= Special Forces Group) got the first jigsaw-pattern smocks. After them the other Commando-battalions got them too. They didn't like them at all :p They missed their former smocks. He kept his and I have it now. Its in my room in a closet. I wear it for Scouting activities and during night games at camp. Works great, has massive cargo pockets, wind-proof but the hood is gone :/
Very effective pattern ande very rare style of uniform. Once again you made a great video and I hope you get the real credit you deserve for this kind of work you post on TH-cam. Respect from Argentina.
Love this camo pattern.I bought the Denison para smock and just found a pair of pants on eBay. Over all I think I paid about $120. They look great but as with all Belgian surplus they have a pretty harsh moldy barn smell which takes a few washings to get out. Great video! Keep up the good work! 👍🏻
Just found your channel , great vid , love all camo related pod casts ,I like the way you let a round off in some of the scenes which indicates getting hit with out seeing you ! Do more of these they are v interesting bud Regards D
I have three iterations of Belgian para smocks, the first style with hand painted brushstrokes, a Denison style moon and balls and one of these with press stud pockets, great bit of kit, they do stink a bit though but you get that with old canvas!
Just for (late info )your half tent sheet is a Moons and Balls . Your trouser and smock are brush stroke. Both are different prints . Congo conflict has nothing to do with it . Just regular Belgain army issue. Your smock is the full zip version , meanig the infantry version . Parasmock is half zip . Trousers are the same for both . These were used to half seventies . They were intended to be worn over the B.D , hence the heavy material and vent holes. Great video .
Even in Belgium these gears starts to become reaaaaally rare and expensive ! But damn ! There thick, reliable and effective ! even more when they are washed out !
Hey guys! I just got a ‘56 dated smock, but it has the all too common dirt and moldy smell one finds in surplus. I’m hesitant about just throwing it in the washer. What’s the best way to CLEAN it. Thanks.
Frank Tower thanks, but I took care of this a long time back. I tried all the various washing techniques but none were totally successful. What worked in the end was putting it in a plastic garbage bag with two packages of activated charcoal fishtank filters from the pet store. No smell whatsoever at the end of two weeks.
Just another of your awesome videos. Camouflage patterns amaze me every time, really. To give you a tip of an old pattern that *should* be quite easy to acquire: East German Strichtarn or Regentarn (two names for the same pattern), also called "Ein Strich - Kein Strich" ("one dash - no dash"), because it's just brown vertical dashes on grey/green background. Watch out though that they are about from the same time period, because the older versions are more tan in the background and mixing them up looks really ugly. They should be easy to get because there are still thousands lying around everywhere. I got some wide pants and a winter jacket as outdoor working clothes, both more than 30 years old but truly indestructible stuff. Anyways: In my experience, the pattern works extremely well in the beginning fall or mid spring, when there are lots of bare branches that match perfectly with the brown dashes, but also in a summery environment it's performing OK. Funnily, I held a presentation in history class about the East German military and wore the entire set together with belt, helmet and gas mask pouch.
Thanks for watching brother. I actually have two videos already for the East German rain camouflage pattern. You can find them in my Camouflage Effectiveness playlist.
wearing canvas in that heat, Brent you go above and beyond to do these videos, lol Before these were introduced in the early 1950s the Belgians issued British Denison (paratrooper) smocks, which as you can see heavily influenced the design.
Great training videos. Consider review of using camo tee shirt as head break up. Pull down over head stopping at eye brows leaving arms to hand down sides, and main shirt to hang down back. Head outline break up. Many colors and patterns available. Having a set as you never know where you are going to go. Always will depend on mission and battle field conditions. I see this parka has large hood great for break head outline break up. Super.
This being an early postwar pattern I think the philosophy was still use of camo as an outer shell to a combat uniform hence the lack of belt loops and cargo pockets. I like bold patterns like this, DPM, Norwegian M98 and Rhodesian patterns over smaller digital patterns, but I have to admit that maybe more for just wearing out then actual effectiveness.
Great stuff as per Brent - quick query on the smock (appreciate the closer look!) it looks like it has the "nappy/crotch" flap on the back, that secures at the front of the smock to keep it in position for jump in a similar vein to the British para smock - is that a feature that was kept?
Yeah, unfortunately when you shoot from the hip when you film (like I do) you leave stuff out. So there is that diaper flap and there is also a string around the waist to tighten it.
Very good, Brent. I like this pattern also, its fits into the Texas terrain very well. I have't say, on the first one where you shot your weapon I liked to have poo-pooed my britches.
Very interesting videos. Never thought there are, or were, so many designs. Not only different color variations, there's different pocket styles, button types, cuffs, collars, trouser gusset reinforcement in crotch area, knee pads, and w/ or w/o eplelettes. Like going to Baskin Robbins for the flavor of the week.
Speaking of denison smocks, do you think you could do a vid on them? I have a repro one and think it blends in great with the terrain near me. Also, for all the pixelated camos in the world, give me a brushstroke pattern any day
Brent0331 Yeah mine was around £120, but I got all the same patches on it as a tribute for my grandfather. He was a reservist paratrooper and sf in the 50s and 60s. So, in that regard it was worth every penny, to me
Brent,,,i dont know if you have done one but could you do a video about Gas Masks ? how to use them , how to know when the filter is depleted, what masks are better ,how to drink water from them, etc . thanks
Another great video, Brent. I'd like to put you on the spot: if you had to go into action in that north Texas woodland environment, which of the many, many camos you've tested would you reach for as the most effective? 1. in the more green conditions of this video? 2. in the wintry, leafless, brown conditions? Keep up the good work.
Ok, that is a good pattern I think. Even more faded and universal than the Italian pattern in the previous video. I am not a huge fan of all the new "multi terrain cam" patterns, coming out now a days, even though they do the job quite OK of cause. I have been bitching some amount about this Multi---trend in the comment section in the previous video, that the militaries should have adapted the colors in their existing camouflage patterns to be more universal by either brightening the darker woodland patterns or darkened the brighter sand colored desert patterns (by eg. some darker but still light green instead of the sand color), they used respectively. Something like this I imagine would have been close to the result actually with respect of the individual patterns and exact color choices, so cool to see. I think this works as good as the different "multi" patterns, at least in this woodland area, and I think, that it works better than the current Belgian Jigsaw pattern, definitely better in short distances at least, so some way I cannot understand why the Belgians abandoned this for the Jigsaw instead of maybe modifying this pattern a little for the specific Belgian natural environment should it be?? Well just my thoughts. Nice video as always. By the way. When I saw the channel update video and heard that the WW2 German Splinter Tarn camo had been filmed I was very excited, as I have been very curious about this pattern for a long time and hoping for it to come. (As written before) So this is like the Christmas Advent. First the good stuff, but the best stuff comes last. The camo version of Christmas Nice. (As I grew up in Denmark I as a very little child got a small present every day in Advent. As I grew a little older I got a slightly bigger present, but only every Sunday in Advent. I do not know how others do Advent and Christmas for their kids, but I just see some similarities to this situation. Have a nice day every one. :o)
Its funny, I've read that in the final evaluations for the Marine Corps MARPAT camouflage trials when they were looking to replace M81 woodland. The Rhodesian camouflage pattern was one of the leading contenders.
Interesting actually. I too think, that this Rhodesian pattern is very good. Works well in both your videos with it. I think though, that the US Marine Corps have the right philosophy in having a pure desert pattern for sand deserts (seem to me?) and then a "not too dark" (digital) woodland pattern for most other environments. From being interested in camouflage for a few years now (Came suddenly out of nothing? :o) ) Watching your channel and others eg. airsoft'ers camo videos, it seem to me, that it is a disadvantage to try to be too universal for a camo. It has a certain range of effective utilization and that's it. Just today I stumbled over this video of Kurds fighting in Raqqa Syria against ISIL. They wear US Marine Corps uniforms (commercial reproductions? or something very similar in colors.) and seem to blend quite well (not on the rooftop but with a little darker background it works good) in this urban environment in sandy desert-like colors, So not a bad philosophy IMHO :o) (But I am also a little biased against these "multi" camos pouring out from allmost every camo manufacturer the last couple of years. ) th-cam.com/video/oK8j5Uwg9Pw/w-d-xo.html
Can you make a video where you give us your thoughts on ALL of the different camouflage patterns you have tested and give us your opinion on the best and worst, most effective and least effective?
That's funny because usually its the other way around, us big guys have trouble finding big sizes because its always small stuff left on the surplus market.
Hey I'm currently living in Utah near SLC and am around a lot of pine forests and high desert along with some green plains. What are two camo patterns you'd recommend for the area that are commercially available? I've been partial to Tiger Stripe patterns and ATACS schemes recently, too. I was thinking one arid type and one greener pattern. Thanks!
I'm a fan of the tiger patterns, check out my two videos "Tiger stripe products original Vietnam tiger stripe" and "Desert tiger stripe". I'm partial to A-TACS as well.

Mine is obviously old...but I paid about $60.00 for it in a surplus store in Phoenix back about 10 years ago.
:o) Here is a link to the Swedish defense's TH-cam channel th-cam.com/users/SwedishArmedForcesvideos Here you can find some footage with M-90 for the waiting time. :o) Nice day.
Seems to work well, but I would die in that thing, ha. Those vents are not enough with that thick material. I have overheating issues. Good thing I am highly cold tolerant at least.
It is very thick, probably one of the thickest uniforms I have encountered doing this. It really is like wearing a shelter half. Tuff as nails for sure.
I am sure it is very strong, but if I end up as a baked potato, it is not too useful, ha. Thinking about it though, during the cold season here in Alabama, this makes some sense. We do not really get much snow, so cold and no snow, this might work...too bad it is one of those unicorn uniforms, ha. Hard to get.
I got 2 questions for you. 1 do you hunt? 2 if you do what camo do you think would be the most effective in the fall months. I'm in western PA so we have mostly brown with orange leaves at the beginning of deer season. The real tree pattern sucks. Thanks in advance.
I use to. Not so much anymore. In the fall/winter Max 4 is pretty good to go. I've got a video featuring it on here. That's usually what I wear if/when I go duck hunting. Seems to blend in very well with the woods in the fall/winter as well.
Brent0331 awesome man. Thanks for the response. I've tried all kinds and my buddy's tell me I stick out like a sore thumb lol. Appreciate it brother I'll take a look at that.
Maple woods are tough to blend in with, especially with all of the yellow and orange. If you're set on using a tree stand, there's a pattern by a company called See3D called Orange Leaf or something like that that could potentially work. That said, you'd be better off on the ground or on a short stand five or six feet up with a pattern that matches tree bark well.
Hans Ollo Lo your telling me? It's very hard. I don't use a stand. The property I hunt won't allow it so I'm a ground guy that uses vegetation when available. But like you said. The Damn maples are more of a silver/gray color. All the shit out there is either too green or too brown. I'm using the real tree that has some Orange leaves on it but my bud has the same stuff and I can pick him out 100+ yards away. If I can see him you know the deer can
Hans Ollo I've been thinking of finding a ghillie suit and trying that. But the Damn maples being silver don't help the cause. I'm talking archery here btw. If this was rifle I'd be fine. But not allowed rifles in my county
What have you there? FN FAL? Weapon Appropriate to the Congo, back in the day. Camo is Good bug protection even if one would sweat their rocks off. Quite effective camo, likely work in the Northern Temperant zones. I like it. Best
Yeah, unfortunately when you speak off the cuff you forget/over looks things. I left out that there is a draw strings that goes around the waist to tighten it too. Oh well. Thanks for watching man.
Sure am glad I'm not a terr, on the run.. I have 3 Belgian OD green trousers in great condition and 1 pair no belt loops, but all have buttons for basic suspenders. Makes it easier to don and then cinch waist, especially when you have use the head.. The other 2 have belt loops w/buttons that can pass a pistol belt thru , 2 cargo pockets/ 1small square waist pocket & regular slash pocket 80's vintage. Very thick textile and velcro ankle cuff. These brush strokes look very effective in the Bush. Especially against a Trained soldier. Sure am glad I'm not a Terr.☠
wow id say for me atleast (first watchthrough) 65 even 70% effective. so not bad, not bad at all.

Camo is a bitch to get almost anymore. Sure the suro acu, abu, and multicam are around now but good luck finding golden tiger stripes and anything outside of 3 color desert and woodland. Its hard to out a matching set together unless you are willing to throw down the cash.
Man amazing how well militaries in the past camouflaged themselves to what we have now. Some of the older styles I think work better in the green than the current styles. Our Grandfathers in arms really did know wtf they were doing.

Always liked that pattern. Thanks for taking the time bring it out from the history bin.
Thanks for watching.
Another flawless video brother! Very effective camo.
Thanks brother.
Up close the pattern didn't look too impressive, but in practise - especially in that environment - it works a treat.
Love this camo pattern.I bought the Denison para smock and just found a pair of pants on eBay. Over all I think I paid about $120. They look great but as with all Belgian surplus they have a pretty harsh moldy barn smell which takes a few washings to get out. Great video! Keep up the good work! 👍🏻

Every time I watch these videos I'm playing a game of find the decked out military version of where's Waldo.
I have three iterations of Belgian para smocks, the first style with hand painted brushstrokes, a Denison style moon and balls and one of these with press stud pockets, great bit of kit, they do stink a bit though but you get that with old canvas!

If you find a parka without this mark, it's a copy !
Thanks for the input. This is the kind of comments I absolutely love.... random facts about the gear/uniforms.
Hey guys! I just got a ‘56 dated smock, but it has the all too common dirt and moldy smell one finds in surplus. I’m hesitant about just throwing it in the washer. What’s the best way to CLEAN it. Thanks.

More effective than Belgian jigsaw
very interesting videos theyre all good camo i like the dennison smock have a truly great heritage
I'v got a pair of the trousers in my collection. Really awesome camo in my opinion.
Great video as always Brent!

Thank you for the response! I actually checked the CE playlist before writing this, must've overlooked it! THX for the heads up.
Yup, event have the East German Blumentarn pattern in there.
wow, I've only seen that in VERY old NVA instructional videos about bayonet fighting.
wearing canvas in that heat, Brent you go above and beyond to do these videos, lol
Before these were introduced in the early 1950s the Belgians issued British Denison (paratrooper) smocks,
which as you can see heavily influenced the design.

Cool. Thanks for the reply chap - keep shooting from the hip.
Very good, Brent. I like this pattern also, its fits into the Texas terrain very well. I have't say, on the first one where you shot your weapon I liked to have poo-pooed my britches.
lol, nice!
That was very effective.
I concur.

Maybe in the future. Even the repros are expensive.
Brent0331 Yeah mine was around £120, but I got all the same patches on it as a tribute for my grandfather. He was a reservist paratrooper and sf in the 50s and 60s. So, in that regard it was worth every penny, to me
saw it 4 times out of all them pretty good
Nice video as always man
Thanks
Brent,,,i dont know if you have done one but could you do a video about Gas Masks ? how to use them , how to know when the filter is depleted, what masks are better ,how to drink water from them, etc . thanks
Herlander25 that would be a good video man. Great idea
Very effective, in my colour blind opinion
3:02 can confirm, it fits over the Belgian M1 clone.
Very good thick canvas for winter I guess but I like it , but Belgium jigsaw is my current favorite
Nice

I won't tell. If Soviet paratroopers start falling from the skies you'll find out.
Haha, fair enough mate. I suspect they'll have their work cut out. They won't know what hits them. Keep up the good work.
Excellent video. Oif 1 11b
Thanks brother.
you should get your hands on some multicam tropic to test its effectiveness
When the price comes down, I will. I spend so much money on this stuff as it is already.
Ok, that is a good pattern I think. Even more faded and universal than the Italian pattern in the previous video. Probably not, I just film the stuff and put it out there, Its up to you guys to decide what you think will be most effective for your area.
Brent0331, fair enough. I just thought it would be interesting to hear what you thought were some of the better patterns.
For a future video can you do multicam tropic
If/when I ever get my hands on it.
Is it possible you may do some of the new A-TACS patterns?
I'm hoping to be able to do something in the future but thus far I have not picked it up. I am a big fan of FG and AU though.
Brent0331 Thanks to your A-TACS Video. I'm planning on ordering some A-TACS AU camo soon.
Cool brother, glad I could help.
Have you done AOR2 aka NWU type III? I've been looking for a good video on it.
Don't currently have any.
Check out Alpha Charlie concepts, he's got one.
Brent0331 Thanks!
It's hard to find those pants not in super large sizes, I managed to find a human sized one from KommandoStore, was the last pair they had.
That's funny because usually its the other way around, us big guys have trouble finding big sizes because its always small stuff left on the surplus market.

Desert Tiger, ATACS AU, Realtree Max-1 XT.
Appreciate it! Will check them out.
Arid Fleck also performs well.
Brent, does that parka have a maybe "oily" scent to it?? Remember like the old ass OD green GP tents the Corps had back in the 1990's early 2000's...

It smells like old surplus. Its really thick, pretty much like canvass used in a half shelter. It reminds me completely of GP tent material.
can you do a new Swedish m90 video again, love to see it in more heavy wood whit alot of green.
:o) Here is a link to the Swedish defense's TH-cam channel th-cam.com/users/SwedishArmedForcesvideos Here you can find some footage with M-90 for the waiting time. :o) Nice day.
ThroatNotchingTrout ZZZ i have seen it in action, but thank you for the answer.
You are welcome, I just wanted to be helpful. :o)
thanks for being that i appreciate it, i wear the m90 for my country and i am proud of it. do you have a camo you like?
Its going to be too late now. We have entered into fall, were losing leaves left and right and the vegetation is changing colors.
well as Belgian I love the current Jigsaw camouflage more...
and we still have that lint to tight the pants.
The bigger hood does a great job of breaking up the shape of the head.
*I really like that Jacket, I'd wear it every day!*
Could you do arid woodland effectiveness please
Its coming, its already been filmed.
Brent0331 awesome thankyou!

We do not really get much snow, so cold and no snow, this might work...too bad it is one of those unicorn uniforms, ha. Hard to get.
Would you be interested in testing chinese tibet camo?
I've had my eyes out for it. It would probably be more suited for the fall/winter.
I like it. Best
Sure is a FAL.
Brent0331 One of my favorite guns. "The Right Arm of Freedom". Best
Hell yes my friend.
Hey, Brent, where did you find that rare kit?
Man its tuff. I had the pants for a couple years before I came upon the smock. Ebay is your best bet. A few stores carry the pants at a good price.
Brent0331 Thank you much Brent. I'm ex- infantry soldier myself, just love camouflage and gear also, love the vids keep out coming.
@Brent0331 i was wondering if you could do a vid about the buntfarbenanstrich camouflage used by the Imperial German army of ww1 seen on the stahlhem
I can't see that happening brother. Would be too difficult and expensive for me to do anything like that.
@Brent0331 if i get some replica helm with camo paint ill send her over
I've been trying to source this camo, any tips on where to find it?
Ebay probably
@@Brent0331 thanks!
do you allready found some? because i know a shop that has these
@@hansmustermann6524 I have not! I'll find the occasional shirt/jacket on ebay but nothing in my size.
I love the euro african camo
There are definitely a lot of good patterns that have come out of African conflicts.
I got a couple of size 8 smocks if you interested....i noticed your is a size 6
I actually have 2 others now. Thanks though.
@@Brent0331 I managed to get an unissued size 8....vibrant colours no repairs dated 1956....wear it daily.
Thought you would have mentionned the diaper. Still a good overview.
Yeah, unfortunately when you speak off the cuff you forget/over looks things. I left out that there is a draw strings that goes around the waist to tighten it too. Oh well. Thanks for watching man.
The Belgian did not use belt loops because they want to avoid bump fire.
We’re can I Git it
Ebay is probably your best bet.
Face paint vid tutorial?
I've got two, "camouflaging individual gear and equipment" and "BCP international face paint review".
Effective pattern. I'd dead, lol
Yeah its pretty good.
Can I use a trijicon acog on a 308
You would have to buy an ACOG designed for a 308 round.
Brent0331 what about an elcan specter
wow id say for me atleast (first watchthrough) 65 even 70% effective. so not bad, not bad at all.
Camo is a bitch to get almost anymore. Sure the suro acu, abu, and multicam are around now but good luck finding golden tiger stripes and anything outside of 3 color desert and woodland. Its hard to out a matching set together unless you are willing to throw down the cash.
Yup
5:17 you lose! lol
