I lucked out. My Norman started fetching and bringing the ball back right away without training. He puts it in my hand most of the time. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and the ball is in my hand.

Personally, my absolute FAVE moment is when I see a cat I am 'training' stop, sit, think a moment, then give that "I'm done with this" look and walks away, usually followed by ME saying, "Okay, buddy... later!", followed by some sort of acknowledgment "Meow" back over the shoulder.
I truly feel sorry for people who just do not GET the intelligence of cats.

Penny is a pro at half-fetch. I throw the toy, she chases it, picks it up (sometimes giving it the death shake), then drops it in front of herself and looks up with pride and a tail twitch.

This is *just* the video I’ve been wishing for! My cat does tricks for treats twice a day without fail. She likes to run after a thrown mouse or other small toy, but is not sure what to do with it when she gets there. Fetching would seem to be good to prolong play, but I didn’t know how to train her for it. I only knew it was complex. Thanks for these steps to getting us started!

Our 8 week old kitten brought me one of her toys, and I tossed it across the room. She played bunny kicking it and brought it back near me after about 30 seconds.
After a few days of (pretty clueless) training, I can now throw it down the hallway and she will run and get it. Has trouble tracking it sometimes, but, I’m amazed she just started doing this!

Thanks! I'm gonna give it a try. I appreciate seeing how you have taken Jones so far with an activity that isn't a natural for him. Figuring out the step-by-step strategy is the challenge at this stage of my beginner cat training days. We train several times a day, and he loves it. I'm pretty sure it's all about the food, but he purrs his way through. Sometimes he'll tell me that he thinks it's time for a training session by just starting to do tricks on his own. So cute! Thanks again!

By the way, my boy does fetch now. Kind of. It's not a natural thing for him to do. But he'll bring something I ask him to from about 18 inches away and put it in my hand. Usually. Took him a few weeks. Maybe a month. But he gets it now. It won't be like playing fetch. It's just a trick for him. I have since learned that cats don't see well up close, so that may be why he usually touches my hand with his paw too when he puts the toy in it. Training some simple things take a day, or one session. Other things take a month. But it's all fun! For both of us!

This is the one I just haven't been sure how to teach Ajani. He loves his clicker training (or at least the treats he gets for doing his clicker training) and I had no clue how to break this down for him. He picks up on things I come up with so quickly sometimes. . .getting him master a specific target spot is the hardest thing.

oo thank you! can’t wait to try this with my cat!! she’s a weird one and only fetches effortlessly when i’m brushing my teeth. she would bring her toy to me on her own terms
while i’m brushing my teeth and wait for me to throw it. once i do, she’ll run after it and drops back right in front of me. when i’ve tried to do this other times of day/when i’m not brushing my teeth, she will just chase after the toy but doesn’t bring it back. lol so i’ll have to give this a go and report back

My cat, Red Boy loves to play “go fetch”. Only took me an hour to train without food treats. I only talked to him saying “go fetch” and I’d toss the mousey toy and or other stuffed toys. Once he brings it brought it to me, I would say thank you and praise him with a little back rub! Now he would meow non-stop with toy in his mouth until he finds me. He would drop it by my feet still meowing. His way of asking me to play go-fetch with him.

My cat brings toys to us but when we are sleeping or on the computer. We play with him but the doesn't bring it back. He chases and then sits down waiting for us to get it lol. Maybe he has us reverse trained. Would love to get him to bring it back. He is such an energetic cat.

My Abyssinian cat brings me a stick with a thread tied to it, but only when I throw it in one direction. When I throw it from kitchen to the living room he brings it back, but not the opposite. He used to bring it from any place, but now he has a strong connection and he doesn't bring other toys. My really has fun doing this, he begs me to play fetch but doesn't do it the right way. I need to teach him to bring the toy where I am.

My cat loves his wand toys- the bigger and more ribbons or sparkly stuff, the better! He especially loves his unicorn and sometimes carries it in his mouth and bring it to me while he meows (telling me he wants to play). He also will "fetch" the unicorn at the end of the wand if I put it at the top of his cat tree, but he brings it to the floor and drops it under my desk. I'm really hopeful I can somehow train him on the whole fetch process!

My cat Luna(female tuxedo) loves to throw the ball down the stairs and retrieves it and repeats over and over, I believe it would be easy to teach her fetch as she already grasps the concept of fetch just need to include me in the game. Thought I would give your technique a shot, let you know if it works with the clicker/treat process.

Wow, how quick he picked that up, pardon the pun haha. My cat has no interest in toys, she is all about attention. We are currently learning buttons and she just loves to train and interact. I know that you will probably think that this is wrong, but with button training she started making repeated mistakes so I had to start saying "no". Interestingly, whilst I said "no, that's wrong try again" she would purr her loudest. Perhaps it was because I always found something to reward her for within half a minute if she made a mistake so she always knew that treats were coming. I also think it is very important to close sessions. I have always ended periods of being given treats with "No more" and I show her both of my palms so she can see that they are empty, is this something you do too? Anyway, thank you for the video, I must try this at some point now I know how to do it.

Both of my cats pick up toys. One, Onyx, barely does and has weak fetch potential. The other one, Roran, has high fetch potential and is constantly picking toys up, dropping them in certain places like at his "bed" and has even been bringing it to me rarely. He's only 4 months old. I clicker trained them a month ago very easily, but I haven't started teaching them tricks till now. I started teaching fetch earlier today, I kinda started teaching it by throwing the ball in which Roran always runs after it, at first he would just play with it, pick it up and then drop it in the same spot and walk away. I'd click when he has it in his mouth and at first he would drop it immediately then run to me for the treat. But I'd get up before he got to me, I'd pick it up, have him touch it, then I'd walk back with it, he would follow me, I'd have him touch it again then I'd click and give him a treat. Now after a few 5 minute sessions, he's bringing it back to me half the time, when I click after he picks it up and even sometimes without clicking.
As for Onyx, I will probably have to start at the beginning like you did woth yours since he has less motivation for picking up. Very smart cats, just like yours is extremely smart.

we have a pretty big garden and often throw with rocks or toys and she'll run after it, she won't pickit up though, only lay next to it and wait till i come to throw it again. Mostly when we're sleeping she often brings toys throughout the whole house, she likes walking around with stuff in her mouth. That's why i think learning her to play fetch is very possible, the only problem is that she isn't a big fan of snacks, she get's wet food in the morning and evening and some snacks throughout the day but would never eat that, we tried multiple snacks or other hard food but she simple isn't a fan of that. I tried to follow this video but she won't eat the snacks, just walking away from it. I just remembered that she is a fan of ham tho, so i could try to use that but i don't want to give her much ham. Is there anything else i can try when a cat isn't a fan of food... She is 8 months old btw.

My cat ( Mr Tibbs ) can pick up a toy and bring it back when you throw it for him but how do you make them drop it in you're hand? p.s. great videos: me and tibbs watch a new one every night and thanks to you , my fluff ball is now trained. :)

My cat plays fetch with my hair ties every single day, I never taught her anything she just started picking them up and dropping them on my bed and looking at me so I would throw it then she would bring it back and I hit the road again and so on and so forth. She does it so often sometimes my arm gets tired lol. My cat is a tortoiseshell and her name is Chanel and she is my love bug

I didn't have to train my cat to play fetch, he just does that. One day i threw the ball and he brought it back at my feet, i threw it and he brought it back again. Now it's an havit for him.

Hi! How many days did Jones go from not interested in toys at all my cat) to dropping the toy into your hand??

My kitty is great at picking up ball toys. She sort of brings it back to me, but I know she needs the extra training step to really get to true fetch. Can I skip the picking up the ball step?

I successfully have done this with my cat before, without training myself how to do it 🙂

When we got my kitten she used to play fetch with these plastic springs. I never trained her but I'd throw them down the hall and she'd trot back with it in her mouth and drop it in front of me to go again. She seems to have grown out of this behaviour so I'm keen to give this a try. Ever since she's been going outside she's had little interest in play or toys and has become an avid mouser so perhaps training could be a good form of enrichment for her.

My cat will pick up her toy and drop it immediately I have her trained to do that. I was trying to teach “pick it up” but she doesn’t hold it in her mouth long enough. My biggest question is how do I introduce the “cue” or “command” with clicker training? Do I say the command with the click? Before they do the command or after? Also how do I introduce hand signals ?

This is the tutorial I was hoping for. My cat chases paper balls and carries them around but does not bring them to me. When she sometimes comes close to me with the paper ball and I try to grab it from her mouth, she quickly runs away with it. She thinks the game is to not let me take it away from her. I will try the paper roll with treat inside. Thanks

Great Video! Do you have an tip for my cat who is not food-motivated? He already likes to fetch but he stops an arm length away from me, so that I can not reward him for putting the toy in my hand or near me

I have a teaser (mouse on string on stick) my black tabby picks it up with his mouth and runs to where he wants to play with it but he doesn’t fetch. My white cat was a rescue and I love her to death but she’s a little slow, she’s a runt so she doesn’t like to play as much as she does laying on peoples faces. Should I play with them separately to get her up to speed?

My kitten Oreo started bringing me the toy mouse in his mouth automatically and dropping it by my side. I’d throw it and he repeats the process. He now drops it in my hand and taps me if I don’t throw it immediately. This has all been subconsciously I think as I have never trained him with anything it’s all been a natural progression.. I have never given treats…

I'm going to try this with my cat 😃 she likes to chase a ball if I throw it, but she doesn't bring it back. Just wondering, what kind of treats do you use? My cat is small and I have to be strict with her food or she gets overweight easily... I don't feed her more than 3-4 treats each day. But I guess this would work with hard food?

    • @CatSchool
      @CatSchool  ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, you can train with your cat's dry food.

So my cat is highly play/toy motivated but not so much treat motivated. The only treat she'll eat without a second thought is those churus but then she won't pay attention to anything else. How would you go about training a cat that isn't treat motivated?

Is there any other way I can reward my cat other than with food? My vet adamantly wants me to only give my cat wet food (he has some health issues), and he's also a little overweight, so it's not ideal for me to give him little snacks. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have a black cat too. Is it just my impression, or do all black cats purr like a freight train? Anyway, I have a bit of a challenge: cat training in a multi-cat household, where the cats in question are less than a year old. Any suggestions? Black cat frequently steals the treats from the smaller tabby kitten...and then she gets discouraged. I try to prevent it, but it distracts from train8ng... Anyway, enjoying your videos. They are brilliant. I taught my previous kitty to tolerate nail clipping through sort of similar steps, but trying to teach these two goofballs anything makes me think I simply lucked out with previous cat...

So I have been trying a few of these. Is there an age that is too young to start? My kitten is about 11 weeks old and only been in our home about 2 weeks. Is this too early to start learning any tricks? As a kitten his attention span is all over the place and to be honest he doesn't seem to know the difference between treats and his normal kibble food lol. He doesn't seem to care if I dont give him the treat
