Even worse, he might simply say so now, to not risk the upcoming elections even more and then change his stance after. When it comes to McConnell I want to see it lucked in before I even start to believe a tiny bit

I believe there are several reasons that all boil down to one explanation: McConnell enjoys the power of gripping our country by the throat.

McConnell is fine with the stripping-away of the rights of one group of Americans after another (using Pastor Niemoller's famous words as a how-to guide), and he is also fine with a lawbreaking autocratic wannabe-strongman type as president (witness his defense of Trump after both impeachments) .. he just doesn't want it to be messy like January 6th was.

They set a precedent that they themselves can choose a president in 2000. In the language of Bush v Gore they claimed that their decision does not create a precedent but everything the court does sets precedent and they know it.

@@havable While there's a lot to say here like how there's no real democracy in usania anyway; the decision in 2000 to put into power an unelected official who lost the election and then refuse to remove him was a death sentence for the supposed 'democracy' of the usa.
It continues to baffle me that people truly think the usa is a democratic society when it was clearly never that at any point in it's history.

There's also a movement to make the electoral college irrelevant. Several states have already joined the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) whereby whomever wins the national popular vote would get ALL of the electoral college votes and win the presidency. That's not based on anything other than a hunch and the fact that he never suffered any consequences. "Rep. Calvert’s ethics issues stem from (1) his use of earmarks for personal gain; (2) his illegal land purchase; and, (3) his connections to a lobbying firm under investigation. Rep. Calvert was included in CREW’s 2006, 2007, and 2008 reports on congressional corruption."
