Almost immediately he went to the “what have the Democrats given you?” I had to remind him I’m an independent, however it’s not about what the Dems gave me it’s about what the Republicans took from me. You hit the nail on the head, sir. I was a Republican when I left for college in 2003…graduated with a degree in political science and became utterly disgusted with politics. But there was one MAJOR thing that began to eat at me…supply side economics. The failed economic policy that republicans keep shoving down our throats that has led to the largest divide between the rich and poor in human history. Im an independent now. When I go to vote I find that R by someone’s name and I vote against them. Every. Single. Time. If republicans abandon trickle down, admit they were wrong, and apologize for effectively destroying economic equality….independents, like me, might give them a fair shake.
But let’s be honest… that’s never gonna happen.

N Hurley - you hit the nail on the head too. That is exactly why the Reps kept shoving that theory down our throats - to make THEM the richest on top of that divide. The only policy that would really work is "trickle UP" economics - giving to the poor and working classes, who spend it immediately on food, shelter and clothing, thus automatically creating new wealth for the owners of businesses. Actually simple, when you think about it.

I'm Scottish, lived in the US for a few years until recently & have a lot of family there.
I honestly think voting should be mandatory (as long as it's possible), like in Australia. Until that time, I encourage anyone/ everyone to do what they can to get family & friends to vote.
I made (literally) my sister come with me to vote in her first election when we lived together when at university. She wasn't particularly engaged, but we're now in our 30s & she votes & has become more engaged over time.
During my time in the US, her husband was my registered proxy voter here (we can legally designate a person in the same district to vote for us if we have specific reasons we are unable to attend the polling station). He wasn't always as engaged as my sister either - having him vote for me meant he definitely always voted too.
Over time, people do get more engaged when they start younger.
I actually find my parents are harder to convince re the importance of voting, although a lot of that is because the parties they may previously have supported have changed a lot. We have multiple options here too, which makes it easier to align with a party... still. I'd rather vote for the ones closest to my personal philosophies than sit it out.
I don't really care if I merely annoy people into voting!
(Although I will never tell anyone who to vote for, but I'll always encourage anyone to vote.)
      Good luck in future!

Just asking, bc of fxcking Brexit, where too many people did not use their head(/brain) and just went on an anti-EU/ British pride 'feeling'.
Ditto with the Scottish independence referendum 2 years earlier.

I won't get into the weeds here, but over the last 15 years I have undergone some significant changes in the way I view and think about a variety of things in today's society. I'm a Boomer, and yesterday I went and voted along with the young people you referred to. The election results that are being reported today make me happy. Trumpism is hopefully on its way out of our lives and we maybe can see the beginnings of an embrace to a more humanistic approach to governance. I appreciate the work you do...keep it up.

I hope very much you are right about an end to Trumpism; I feel like the one thing that should give me hope is that GOP senators / politicians have certainly gotten used to people going from up & coming one day to "don't know him never talked to him" the next with an almost Stalinesque frequency. So maybe that can happen to Trump, deSantis and their likes, too.
I badly want a blue wave (I'm European, but I'm painfully aware that we are all facing mayor global problems and we need the US to be aware and active, not busy whipping up a useless panic about transgender), but right now I'm just happy that the red wave didn't happen and the majority of US voters are still sane. Learn from their mistakes. Don't allow the disappointments and heartbreaks that life brings, to make you become bitter, spiteful, and selfish. My son and daughter-in-law funded the first week, but the girls had to pay them back and fund further weeks from the profits of the first week. At the end of the month the girls decided, with no input from their parents, to donate all their profits to the local animal shelter. They did this the next summer, too. Even gerrymandered they are losing. In CO bobert was almost guaranteed a win with her district with the way it has been sliced and diced yet here we are with her still trailing, she is only down around 1% but has been since early reporting started.
Sadly I am still stuck with abbott so its not all good news but that gap is getting smaller each election cycle.

I lived there until a few months ago. The crime problem is WILD. And the dems do seem to be way to easy on true violent criminals. I think that contributed too. Dems shouldn’t be silly like that.

@@baconsoup8346 I think it is a combination of factors from the GOP pushing out a lot of its core moderate base for more right wing crazy, abbott himself prides himself on poaching jobs from CA which is a strong blue leaning, and there have been a number of questionable missteps over the last term that really have shaken the ground he is on. Uvalde, the rush to open Texas as covid still burned, the hard Texas freeze to name some of the front runners in my mind.
Personally am not a big Beto fan but given my options he got my vote. A look at the last poll was about 10% difference, not close but not far and seeing progress over past elections you are right in that things are shifting as a whole. I didn't expect this to be the magic blue bullet but it is nice to see that overall the nation is looking for more moderate and less bat shit crazy. Given that most democrat campaigns were relatively benign overall they are doing ok. I would like to see more fight in the party, Beto had a few good outbursts but could have stood to have a few more, Frisk with his "I am not Nancy Pelosi" made me chuckle, and Feterman was fun to watch most other campaigns were more of a side note.

Texan here, realistically I knew Abbott was going to win because there’s just too many stubborn GOP voters (but it didn’t make the results any less disappointing). I’m glad to see it wasn’t quite the case in many other parts of the country.

To be fair, The dems running Beto was a mistake. I’m not a Texan but I’ve lived there for a cumulative 3-4 years. He’s a terrible candidate. Arizona did the same thing, ran a bad candidate against Lake.

Here in Michigan the Democrats took control of both houses of the state Legislature for the first time in 48 years; the Democratic governor, secretary of state, and attorney general were all reelected; and proposals for reproductive rights and voting rights passed. We're _supposed_ to be a swing state. Interesting implications for 2024.

    • @ruthslone2992

I think Democrats need to keep a running total of how many rapes were reported in Texas, ever since Abbott promised to address that issue in his promotion of forced reproduction. THEN they need to match up how many RAPISTS have been PROSECUTED, including those that are incest crimes. I’m betting he’s ignoring sex criminals and/or giving them slaps on the wrist, when they deserve castration and hard time. Keep the pressure on them for their choice to be “anti”-choice, until they squeal.

Fellow Texan here. I feel disappointed but not surprised as well. Just wished they ran someone better than Beto. Thing is, I don't know of anyone that might draw enough traditional Republicans away from the GOP, even if they see that changes in it. We need someone like a modern day Democratic Teddy Roosevelt to get that done.

My kid's school had voting parties. The high school kids organized carpools and breakfast/lunch plans for the 18 years olds to go vote while the other kids cheered them on. That is VERY different than my high school years. Trumpism was a backlash, that has, in turn, created its own backlash.

I am thinking "the left" needs our own version of Turning Point and Pragar U. We need young, energetic Americans going to the high schools and college campuses to spread the word about Progressive ideology.
The premise is very simple to understand. The Oligarch Class is your enemy. If the 99% unites under one banner of ending corruption - BRIBERY - of politicians, then the rest will fall in line. Once the wealthy 1% and corporate special interests make no profit from buying the federal government, we can have a government that is truly of and for the people.
