I thought before I clicked on this video, “I bet she’s going to make a calendula/plantain balm.” Lol. I’ve been drying both plants all summer to make the same concoction!
One of the folk names for plantain is “white man’s footprint” because it grows everywhere explorers and colonizers landed (probably by seeds transported in the soles of their shoes). It grows all over the world (along with a narrow leaf variety). Bit of a plant folklore lover here. Forgive me.

Love the folklore. Very cool. Haha. Great minds think alike. It really is a great balm.

Esther, great job on your video. It was a wealth of information. I am grateful that you also provided step by step instructions from gathering to salve making process. Best of luck always.

I recommend a jelly strainer for separating out the plant matter. It was a game changer for me. Dump it in there and walk away. Then when you come back you can twist the strainer bag to release the last of the oil, then wash and reuse next time.

That's a great idea! Thank you. I have a nut milk bag. I bet I could rig something up using that.

@@EsthersGardeningAdventures I bet that would work well if you could rig up some kind of frame to hang it on like the jelly strainer has.

Yes. Maybe using a metal coat hanger or two

Great video. I made a dandelion salve usung extra virgin oil, beeswax and shae butter, after soaking dandelion petals in the oil for 2 weeks. I added orange oil lavender oil whilst making it. It helps my arthritis pain, but also helps when i get a bite or scratch, completely stops the itching ❤ i was not awate lemon balm wasn't good for thyroid problems, its probably why i cant grow it, ive never had s problem grwing it before my thyroid started playing up! Thank you. Plantain is amazing ❤

Great video! I've been harvesting my calendula flowers and letting them dry out. So far have just infused them in witch hazel for an anti-inflammatory liquid. My neighbor made me some and it is really effective.

Oooh nice. I'm planning on growing/planting witch hazel next year. I hear it takes 3 years to get to maturity

Plantain salve is a miracle for fire ant bites. It almost immediately stops the burning and after a few minutes the “ bump” is gone also. ( at least on me)

Great and timely information! The yellow jackets have been bad in our area this year. I have been stung on 4 different occasions. This past week, I mowed over an in-ground nest and was stung 30 plus times. After the initial pain subsided, the itching set in. I am still scratching!

Oh no! I'm so sorry you went through that! Definitely try a poultice if you have some plantain plants nearby. Fingers crossed it helps. It's most effective when applied immediately after the bite/sting.

I tried to grow calendula this spring and it was a fail. I’ll try again!

Oh no that stinks. I've found it can be quite temperamental if it doesn't have a lot of water especially in the heat.

I'm thinking about ordering Calendula dried flowers but also planting it so I can have salve for the summer and plantain also grows abundant in my yard. Have you heard that you can tell by your weeds what will grow well and if you have a lot of plantain then hostas should be happy there. Seems to be true.

I live in Maryland also and the mosquitoes keep me out of my garden for most of the summer. They take all the fun out of going outside!
