Fun fact, you can run cheap vodka through a water pitcher filter 2 or 3 times and it takes the impurities out, making it comparable in taste to the expensive vodka.
I put the bottle in a dark place, and after 30 days I removed and replaced the herbs with new ones and i repeat the process at least 2 more times, to make it more concentrated. I used between 15 to 20 drops in a 4 oz of water , 3 times per day. I learned from mexican culture, and so far works perfectly.
Just made my first tincture today. White willow bark. I've made Dandelion oil and it works for pain, topically. I use it a lot so need to make more. But am just now learning tinctures. We need these things more than we need chemicals. So I'm hoping this journey takes me a long way
I was scrolling threw the comments and saw it he dandelion oil. I've been wanting to make some. Is it the same as making oregano oil? And can I use the leaves. Haven't seen many flowers. What else is dandelion oil good for?
I have made an echinacea tincture with glygerine for almost 20 years. Now I make extra to share with my adult daughters. When my son was little he asked for "tasty water" when he wasn't feeling well. That was water with a couple spoonfuls of tincture. :)
Can you share that “tasty water” recipe? I have three kids and would love to do that for them! Can you make a video on it and how to use/store/ and how long it lasts once it’s opened?
This tincture my family got from a lady who lived to 101. You can look her up if you like. Evelyn Alsobrooks from Erin Tennessee. She said she took this everyday since age 30. 1/4 cup crushed red pepper 1 dozen habanero peppers (or hotter peppers if you want more capsaicin) 1 large onion (cut up before blending) 1 inch ginger root (unpeeled) 2 dozen cloves fresh garlic (unpeeled) 1 qt (32oz) Fairchild's apple cider vinegar with the mother. (Don't use Bragg's as it has added water) *BLEND UNTIL VERY SMOOTH...... *Only use glass jars, no metal. *Stir up everyday with wooden spoon only. *No refrigeration needed. *Take with or without food. (she said between 1 tablespoon and 1/4 cup per day)
I throw all my leftovers from my tinctures in a large jar with filtered water. It’s a running jar, it’s always being added too. Then I use it as a disinfectant for counters and hands. If the smell is too earthy then I throw in lemon or orange peals.
Hi Mary! From what I understand, a tincture is an extract using 80 proof or above alcohol. Anything below that is an extract, has a shorter shelf life, and the dosage is larger. So when someone is searching for a recipe, that might be helpful. You can also use wine to make extracts - mine is homemade using Heidi from Rain Country’s method.
All great info. And I share some of this info in the printable recipe along with the "RECIPE NOTES" at the blog post that corresponds with this video: marysnest.com/how-to-make-medicinal-herbal-tinctures-using-any-herb/ Love, Mary PS - Love Heidi. She is a wonderful friend of mine.
@@MarysNest both you and Heidi mirror each other in a lot of ways but still have your own touch on many topics! That's a sign of like minds think alike! I've known people to use a crock pot where it's used as a water-bath or they just throw the herbs in the crockpot with the oil throw it on low and boom you're set!
I just came to your channel after you were a guest on Homesteading Family's Pantry Chat! I love how much detail you put into each video and how you cover so many different topics. This is one of the most useful, in-depth channels I've found!
I’ve used 60% 80 proof alcohol and 40% water for my liquid and it works great!! Distilled water of course….tincture will last at least 5 years!! I do this because I want to extract all alcohol and water soluble properties in the herbs.
Thank you for this information. I have a rosemary and lavender tincture going now in acv. But it's not for ingesting. 10 drops is added to a spray bottle with either a 1/4 cup of distilled water or aloe vera juice. It's sprayed on the scalp after washing and before styling.
I’m new to making tinctures (just bottled my farm grown dandelion roots and parts with singani alcohol) AND IM SO EXCITED ABOUT IT!!! Thank you so much for the well informed video. 🙏😋
I made tinctures too and as I was straining the herbs the liquid was dark brown. I then bottled the tincture and left it for 2 days in a dark place. I used a dropper and the tincture had the colour of very light brown???? Why did it change colour?
Thank you for all the work you do for these videos. You get a lot of information out in an easy to understand format. You are so positive and calm, and I appreciate that all.

You are so lovely Mary and a very sweet smile and demenour! Thank you for your instruction as I found it very simple and look forward to making a Licorice tincture!
Hello Mary! Thank you so very much for all you are doing! :) To save money, after my tincture is ready, can I add new plant matter to it and let it steep again for another 4-6 weeks? This way, it will be twice as strong (and I'd take about half the dose) and I don't need to buy another bottle of alcohol for the next batch.
Hi, I'm new to your channel and Apothecary as a whole. I had a question in regards to breaking down the herb as fine as possible. As you mentioned, try to chop them down as much as possible but how about crushing them down with a Mortar and Pestle? I hope this is now a dumb question haha. Thank You for your service to the community

Hi Mary good morning how are you? Happy Mother’s Day to you dear 🙂❤️ and I enjoyed watching your videos and I love you so much 🙂😀😊😄😁❤️💙💛💚💗💜 Please reply Thank you! Vamsi
This channel is better than watching TV I've learned so much I just started learning about herbs and tinctures and bought all the things I need and going to start doing the tinctures tonight. Thank you do much for the wealth of information and the time you take to share your knowledge. I'll always remember you. ❤️✌️ I don't drink alcohol and I sent someone to the liquor store to buy vodka and he bought back Everclear vodka and its 190 proof and listening to this video i got the wrong vodka can i still use that one or should i exchange it for a lower proof?
You mentioned that berries can be chopped to make tincture but I viewed another herbalist video that said chopped dried hawthorn berries with seed inside was poisonous. I had to throw out a whole jar of diced hawthorn berries tincture.
Omg I so wanted to make my own tincture, but I was told you must use 100 💯 % pure vodka! And have been trying to find 💯 % vodka, but after watching your video I realize that I don’t have to use 💯% vodka. Thanks for sharing.
Mary I am a fan of yours so thank you for your video I made the rosemary tincture and long story short it was massaged into the hair instead of of the oil🤫 Is this disastrous? Was a friend who this happens to so I’m a bit concerned If you can help me I would be most grateful 😮Thank you Mary Mary
Hi Sweet Mary :) I've always wondered about tinctures.. So thank you so much for this video - and for all the interesting videos on your channel. Blessings!
Hello. Just stumbled upon you and your video! I’m new to making my own. Any chance you can make this one? I’m making a gallon size for hormone use! 16oz dong quai root-16 oz wild yam root-16 oz chaste tree berries-licorice root 8 oz-Damian leaf 6 oz-hops whole flowers 3 oz pollen in. 100 proof vodka. Start on a new moon it says (but why) keep in dark cool place amber jar. Strain on a full moon 14 days. I got this recipe from Sam biser book 📚 curing with cayenne best book ever.
Mary… I bought dried echinacea and dried honeysuckle buds and by the time they arrived I forgot what I needed it for!! Can you tell me if you know what kind of tincture or extract these dried herbs can be used for?
Thanks for the time you take to make these great videos. My question is: is it ok to use Brandy instead of vodka or grain alcohol to make tinctures/extracts ?
Thanks for the video! Your voice is very calming. :) IMO -- It is better to get organic vodka than non-organic. It is worth the investment to use the best when making medicine. It is not that much more in price. Best is to get organic 95% alcohol and dilute with distilled water to appropriate alcohol percentage as some herbs do better with a higher proof than 80 and other require a lower proof for best results. Be well!

I love this and have shared it with family and friends.

You mentioned that berries can be chopped to make tincture but I viewed another herbalist video that said chopped dried hawthorn berries with seed inside was poisonous. I had to throw out a whole jar of diced hawthorn berries tincture.
Van forsythia flowers be made into a tincture using alcohol?
Yup..it's medicinal
Have you tried mulberry leaf? We usually drink the tea but go through sonny leaves. I thought this might be a good way to get the nutrients.
Good Morning ☀️
I appreciate this video. Thank you
Very helpful thank you - Now if I could just find some information on the concentration/dosage of Moringa Root, as with the root, less is more.
Omg I so wanted to make my own tincture, but I was told you must use 100 💯 % pure vodka! And have been trying to find 💯 % vodka, but after watching your video I realize that I don’t have to use 💯% vodka. Thanks for sharing.
You are confusing proof with percent. You need 80-100% proof.
Thank u for ur wonderful advice
Came to learn about a tincture only to not be able to take my eyes off the fact this lady has TWO coffee makers.
Thank you for this valid info
Wow, so helpful video. Can you please tell me if glycerin without any herb has expiration date. Thanks
Not sure since I don’t use glycerine. Maybe others will chime in. Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️

Mary I am a fan of yours so thank you for your video
I made the rosemary tincture and long story short it was massaged into the hair instead of of the oil🤫

Was a friend who this happens to so I’m a bit concerned

I have the same book! I’m so excited to make my own medicines!🎉
You are a wonderful person thank you
You are so kind!
I was wondering if I could make a tincture out of dried rose petals? Thank you for sharing all your knowledge.

You can make a tincture from dry or fresh herbs.
Dear Mary, could you do a video on how to make vegetable glycerin tincture? Thank you so much for your channel and herbal information ❣
Thanks for the time you take to make these great videos.
My question is: is it ok to use Brandy instead of vodka or grain alcohol to make tinctures/extracts ?
Where to you store them do you have a storage rack for the amber bottles
Thank you 💛
Hi Harriet, so happy you are enjoying these videos. Love, Mary ❤️🤗❤️
Mary,
Any videos on making homemade non dairy kefit?
Where are the best cannolis in Central texas?
Inquiring minds need to know.
Warm sunny place means not direct sun ?
Thank you and God bless
Thanks for the video! Your voice is very calming. :) IMO -- It is better to get organic vodka than non-organic. It is worth the investment to use the best when making medicine. It is not that much more in price. Best is to get organic 95% alcohol and dilute with distilled water to appropriate alcohol percentage as some herbs do better with a higher proof than 80 and other require a lower proof for best results. Be well!
Wonderful video. Thank you. Can one use powder, say leaf, root, flower powders to make tinctures?
