  • Finally manage to get the head gasket sorted in this video so that bit closer to firing it up!
    Question - Do you have any ideas where I could take the car when it's on the road? Any British/classic car events, general car events worth visiting?

    Enjoyed this video, my head gasket went and had a £700 garage bill, i think you need to have an inner calmness to attempt jobs like this, i have a lot of respect for mechanics.

    Hi. When I got my first TF I joined the MGOC and the MGCC. Both clubs organise great events over the year and are well worth a look, cheap to join as well. Obviously with the Corona virus limiting travel at the moment, time best spent getting it ready for such events. Great video, enjoyed it. Cheers. Garry.

    Really detailed and useful videos, providing a great service... Head gasket... I too installed the two part mls gasket thinking it was a foolproof solution only to find out later that this too has a lower level failure rate. I suggest the later N series 6 layer gasket is the ultimate solution. More expensive but apparently with no history of failure. As its also just one gasket it reduces the likelihood of misalignment.

    MGLEE- There's always the fs 25th birthday bash! At the British motor Heritage centre in Gaydon Warwickshire! This summer! (If covid allows!lol) I'd quite like to go with Martin my blue trophy!😁 I bought him from Trophy cars of Stamford, in Feb 2016! They made a point of changing, the headgasket, cambelt and water pump! As a routine procedure when they get every new car in! Which I think is very good!

    Hi Lee, another great, clear video. There's an annual MG meet at the cotswold wildlife park in Burford Oxfordshire which is free and open to anyone driving an MG. Its a good day out with free entry into the park. Not sure if it will take place this year due to covid, but worth keeping an eye out for.

      @@computerrossa tricky one! 🤔 I've had a few comments come through since doing my head gasket and mention things like checking the head/block were level, liner heights were at least 4 thousands above the head etc. The strengthened oil could help so it could be clamped down tighter.

    Just one thing I noticed which probably won't matter, but just in case - I wouldn't use WD40 to clean the surfaces. It is a silicone based fluid which may leave a residue. Just a clean cloth and green scourer should do - maybe damped a bit of gunk or similar degreaser if required..

    The workshop manual tells you to place the bolts in. Then you see how they did it in the factory and figure it's not surprising they had a lot of hgfs. This vid is one of the original Rover promo videos about the k-series. There's a longer version out there somewhere. To be fair the smaller bore variants were all fine, the problems were mainly with the 1.8 th-cam.com/video/Os3b6hVOrFg/w-d-xo.html

    Did you check if the head needed skimming ? Apparently multilayer head gasket is very unlikely to fail they say as its made of steel... just wondering why it failed. Mine has multilayer headgasket which has been going strong for a while now

    • @wheatleysworkshop
      @wheatleysworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Gamer, thats encouraging to know! I did the light check with a flat metal ruler to see if any light came through and couldnt see anything which was a relief. The old gasket didnt looked damaged so may have not been torque'd up correctly or surfaces not cleaned properly perhaps? 🤔

      Ιts may be the liners. Finger crossed and will see.

    • @chriswalford9228

      You can check for head warp by placing it gasket face down on a flat surface ie glass sheet or surface table if you have one, then go round with a feeler gauge. And also you can smear a layer of engineers blue on the flat surface and rotate the head around this will show up any high spots. It doesn't take much of a gap especially on an aluminium head to let water through.

    From what I’ve read it’s the cylinder liners that are one of the main caused of HGF
    Did you check the hight of them to see if they have shifted at all?

    I had that multilayer gasket in my car during 60.000km and then it had a leak in which the air pressure inside the cylinder heads is transferred to the cooling system, so the car was overheating. So 3 years ago I set the SAIC type, with oil rail and bolts (ref. ZUA000530). It was an improvement powered by Ricardo PLC in the SAIC K-Series, they say that there is no failures reported regarding head gasket in that engines.

    • @wheatleysworkshop
      @wheatleysworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect the upgraded one would last much longer, that said I'll be well chuffed if the multilayer lasts anywhere close to 60k! My cylinder liners weren't very good though 😕, still, will be an excuse for an engine swap 😆

    british engineering, no thanks. I used to own an MGF 1.8 vvc 1997 and it got broken three times due to overheating, and all the failures happened driving at 80km/h to no more than 120km/h, 2 at spring and 1 in summer. The engine is a total mess, it got heated so many times, not only the liquid cooling system but also the most dangerous thing, the oil....yeah...i was driving always scared thinking "oh my God will this shit go up this 5% slope this time or will it leave me abandoned in the middle of the highway ?' . There is no coincindence that worst reliability ever are british cars, have a look of nowadays, these brands are topping the failure rankings: land rover with range rovers, jaguar, rover (extint, thanks God). I repaired the head gasket and the cars was still failing till I SOLD IT. cheers and goodwill. The car is beautiful but....not enough to own it.
