On "My Car Story" we're in the Western Suburbs of Chicago IL on 5-21-24.
We're looking at a 1968 Ford Mustang in Wimbledon White Paint.
The car comes with the 428 CI V8 DSO "Domestic Special Order" engine and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Roger Parlett. Roger’s had this car since new. Roger shares he was a new Engineer at Ford and this car was part of the “135 Series” which was where Ford took 50 Mustang Fastbacks, each with a brass identification tag, and with the new 428 Cobra Jet engine to race at the Winter Nationals. The Mustangs ran well in the race. Car # 32 was sent to Engineering to fix some of the problems. Roger would see this car, put in a purchase request for the car, and Ford sold him the car. Some features only car # 32 has are holes cut in the underside of the hood for weight reduction, and it’s the only one to have an automatic transmission. Roger put the car away as he was busy at Ford and with his family. In 2018 he decided to do some minor restoration to get the car back on the road. Yes, he kept the steel rims and dog dish hub caps, however likes these aftermarket chrome rims and that’s what we see on the car today. This car is an amazing piece of automotive history with just over 7300 original miles.

Wonderful story, 1968 Vietnam was hot. I went in the Army in 1969 and saw my car, a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger. It has been a project for 48 years, it keeps me young at 73..

This 1968 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet looked extraordinary in that Wimbledon White! Those five-point chrome wheels look great on it; Also, I was surprised by the holes on the inside of the hood to save weight and all those original labels. Very nice black interior, with its red carpets, and the impeccable instrument panel. Congratulations, Mr. Parlett, for being the original owner of this rare test model and its fascinating history as a Ford engineer! Best regards, Lou!

Hi Jaime, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this Mustang :-) The holes in the hood from the Factory remind me of the 1963 Pontiac's that used to do that to save weight, called the Swiss Cheese Pontiacs.....I would like to get one of those on the Channel :-) Lou

Richard- I am Roger the owner. As the large show sign states-with so many modifications like the traction bars that were welded to the axle it was a great mystery that the car was sold. The car fell through the cracks and it was mine. Glad you and others like it. Thanks

68’ was the greatest year for Mustangs! A guy I knew had one. I can still remember the smell and the sounds of that exhaust. I was a teenager and had no money for something like this. I thought I was on the last of my life headed to LBJ’s Vietnam adventure…

Beautiful and rare Mustang for sure!!! Love the motor tranny combo! A very close Uncle of mine factory ordered a new 1968 Ford Fairlane with the rare 428 CJ motor and 4 speed. Very light car, it turned 13.3's all day long at the strip and trophied every time it was raced. The good ol' days are fondly remembered. Thanks for sharing this beautiful/rare 1968 Mustang!!

Great car, great story, and a lucky guy to have owned it from new. It is the only one I've seen with the Swiss cheese hood. It is not, however, the only automatic 135 cobra jet. At the 1968 NHRA Winternationals, there were 6 Cobra jet mustangs entered by Ford. 3 were 4 speed cars and 3 were automatics. The automatic cars were entered in C/ stock automatic, driven by Hubert Platt, and 2 Super Stock/ E automatic, driven by Don Nicholson and Gas Rhonda. The 4 speed cars were Super Stock /E, driven by Jerry Harvey, Al Joniec, and Hubert Platt. Al Joniec won the event in Super Stock. One other 135 car is owned by the original owner. That car is owned by Vinny Lyons, who was a mechanic at Rye Ford, and drove the car at the drags for the dealership, then purchased the car. It still wears Rye Ford livery.

Thomas - Hello-I am Roger the owner. Thanks for the additional info. I should have stated that my automatic trans car was the only 135 car that left Ford that way. Vinny is an original owner but Tom Huber is another one. Tom bought the car from Tasca Ford and it is pristine.
I am overwhelmed at the interest in my car. Good luck.

What a great story I’m so happy Rodger hung on to his pride in joy all these years. I too own a very similar optioned early 69’ base model mustang fastback 428cj in candy apple with red interior. It’s oddly optioned with all the go fast goodies and it’s a total sleeper with dog dish hub caps. It’s a q code, c6 auto, sport suspension, ps, pb, 3.50 posi, high back buckets, 8:track and handful of others little options.

Very interesting story and history of this car. S code in the VIN, originally born as a 390. Early 68 with the early rear quarter side markers and without the extra .25" steel plate welded to the shock towers that all 68.5 428CJ mustangs and Shelby GT500KRs came with when released April of 68. Test mule for sure.

In those days Fords were not 1 of my fav cars. But, ive always admired their styling and great looks. Once the BOSS 351 & 429 came out, Ford ranked up their with the best of Chevy (my fav).
U & Roger covered the trans & 430 running gear, but not the engine internals......I woulda loved knowing those. The 1/4 stats Roger mentioned r extremely impressive----those rank amongst the best Chevy & Hemis had.
I had 2 good buddies that had a LT1 Nova 4spd and a BOSS 351 4spd; very evenly matched on bottom end.

Nice car. My high school friend had 68 302 4speed car. It was a fun cruiser. I had a 69 427 4 speed Corvette I put together as a theft recovery. I've had at least 150 cars. Still have a 72 Country Sedan wagon and a 68 Eldorado. My summer driver Mercedes CLK 550convertible easily runs low 13's completely stock.
