Thank you for this video. However, do you mind explaining why we have to withhold if we have two jobs? Aren’t we getting taxed on both jobs? Or do we only fill out a w-4 for one job? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
Not a dumb question at all. Each job is only taking the income from that job into consideration, not another stream of income. So if you make $75k and your spouse also makes $75k when we combine that you're now in the 22% tax bracket. Well your job only knows about your $75k so it's only withholding as if you're in the 12% tax bracket, not the 22% it will be when you combine your income on the tax return.
@@AmericasFavEA This is so helpful! It's like a lightbulb went on in my head looking at this video and reading this comment. Thank you very much for this video!! I can’t believe it but it’s so hard to make sure there are enough taxes taken out so I don’t pay so much in April!
I'm so sorry, I'm looking for married filing jointly and the spouse has a job. Do I consider their job as the "lower paying job"? And calculate the same as your last example? P.S. this was super helpful in understanding what this form is about.
No need to apologize! You are correct, you would do the same thing I showed in the last example. If your spouse's income is lower than yours you would find theirs in the rows and yours in the columns.
Thank you for the step by step! My husband doesn’t work and we have 2 dependents. Should I be claiming married filing jointly? Or married separately? Should I be entering any information in the extra withholding section?
@annierivera1789 you're very welcome! You can still file as MFJ. If you choose to put MFS on this form more money will be withheld. Extra withholding is to take into account any additional income...from a second job, business, etc.
Thank you so much! However, what if both spouses make the same with no dependents but one of them have stocks (not me who is filling out this form) what step 2 option should I go for? "C" and let him account for his stocks?
Oooh, nice curve ball! You can check the box at the top that indicates you make the same amount and then let him account for his stock sales/Dividends in part 4.
Thank you for this! struggling with this right now... I feel lost with this info lol my job only took out $175 fed taxes 😵💫 // I'm married filing jointly with 2 kids... what should I be putting on my W4 to make them take out more Fed taxes??
@mercedesperez93 it sounds like you have MFJ marked and both of your children on your W4. If your spouse works you'll also need to fill out line 4c using the chart.
Hey I am still struggling. My spouse and I both work, but my spouse makes more money than I do. We don't have any kids, how would I go about completing this? thank you
Hi thank you for this video. I'm curious to know what would be best in your opinion. My wife and I curently work as a 1099 LCSW therapist and taxes is not taken out but we are both in school working on doctorate degrees and when it comes times to file taxes due to our 1099 we have certain expenses that we can write off which lowers what we typically owe. Because our income as 1099 fluxates it's hard to determine what we would make at the end of the year. This fall I will be accpeting a faculty position and countining to see client as a 1099 but I am curious to know when filling out this W-4 form is there anything we should do to help offset the 1099 issue that we face of always having to owe? Or I guess do you have any advice at all?
It may not be a DIY project. You and your wife need to be making estimated tax payments. I cover how to do that for 2024 in this video - th-cam.com/video/5Lto1Yg_Pcg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qs2j1MZmaGUUKPsv
thank you for the video! however, do you mind explaining how i would go about filling out my w4, my part time job will be making very little money compare to my husband, and he claims both of our kids. Therefore, how would I fill out my w4 correctly?
Hello! Thank you for sharing. When you are married filing jointly and 1 dependent 16 but will be 17 by Dec 31. Both spouses work, husband makes more. Do we both fill out our W-4 exact same and also how about the state taxes? 😊
Only one of you should claim the dependent. Since they will be 17 by December first you'll qualify for the $500 credit vs. $2k. Your W4s will look different, don't forget line 4c! States have their own version of the W4 ☺️.
My husband and I have 2 dependents and are recently married. We plan to file married filing jointly. He is claiming $2000 in his and I am claiming $2000 on mine. is this accurate? or should we have selected 2(c) and not put anything? I am a bit confused. We are in SC and also have state tax to figure out as well. Thanks,
Good Afternoon, I noticed that my job is not deducting any federal taxes. I'm not claiming an exemption, my wife and I both work, I have 3 dependents under 17, and she has 1 over 17. on my paystub, next to federal it says "married filing jointly" however no monies are being deducted. What am I doing wrong?
There are a few things that could be going on. Do you have all 3 of your children listed on your W-4? This could be the reason. Also, if your income from this job is ~$30,000 that could be the reason. If you do have all 3 of your children on your W-4 check in with your wife to make sure she doesn't also have them on hers. Otherwise you'll end up owing next Spring.
@pbemusicgroup if your spouse does not have all 3 you're fine. So if you make close to $46,000 I believe with 3 children you won't have withholding however with you and your spouse having income you will likely want to fill out 4c and ao will she.
My husband already claimed both my children as dependents when he filled out his w-4. I just got hired at my second job that’s only about 8-16 hours a month. At my other job I claimed 0. I’m so lost on how to fill out this form.
So my husband and I both work and make the same amount of money, no dependents and no other income and dividends….so do we just check box 2c, sign and date?
Thank you so much for this video. I am confused about 4c. I just got a part time job and will be making less than a quarter of what my husband makes. The table calculations came out to be $241. Should I have that taken out of my check every pay period?
It should be divided by the amount of pay periods you have left in the year and divided by that amount. For example of you have 10 paychecks left it would be $241/10 - $24.10 on 4c.
Hello, I was a little confused and would like some clarification. I would like to reduce the amount of taxes withheld from my paycheck (more net each pay day). Married filling jointly and my spouse only receives SS and Retirement income. We are empty nesters. Where on the W4 should i be focused on? I think I understand how to adjust additional taxes for my side job which by the way does not take any taxes.. I would just use the chart and divide by the remaining pay periods... It is the 1st question in my reply that I am confused about. Please advise and thank you..
So if I get a job in the middle of the year and fill out 4c with the calculations for the rest of the pay periods in that year does that mean I should update my W-4 and line 4c again at the beginning of next year? (Hope that question makes sense)
Yes, and yes your question makes sense! You will do 4c to make sure you have enough withheld for this year and change it in January so you don't have way too much withheld in 2025.
If I dont fill out extra in 4c and we have no dependents, married filing jointly will I not see any tax come out of my ck untill I make the $29,000 since we take the standard deduction?
So I went part time because of childcare issues, and my wife is full time nurse, after I went part time I am getting nothing taken out for federal. Is that supposed to happen? She gets all federal taken out of hers, and we do have 1 child under 4. Suggestions on if I need to redo my W4 and how to fill that out if I want taxes taken out of check?
If your part time income is less than ~25k that is why no taxes are being taken out. Make sure you fill out line 4c and that your child is only on 1 of your W4s. Best wishes to you and your wife balancing marriage, work, and parenthood!
Im working for a company im claiming 0 dependants, married filing jointly i don't have any extra deductible of any kind i did my w4 twice for my job, they keep telling me i need to put in 4c what i want them to take out, im so confused, its going to be 6 months and they still haven't taken out federal taxes, what am I doing wrong or they doing wrong im over it. They're correct if you want taxes taken out. Does your spouse have income? You'll use that amount and your income to fill out the chart I used in this video.
