    Edwin uses many Sanskrit terms. Here is a guide:
    Jnana Yoga - this is the yoga of study, thought, rational, deep study, and discourse.
    Karma Yoga - this is yoga of action, taking right actions, righteous action and following dharma and ethical actions based in the yoga belief system.
    Bhakti Yoga - this is the yoga of devotion. The practitioner has deep love and devotion for a form of God or Goddess, or even the Guru. Practices include rituals of worship, prayer, song, service, meditation on the deity, temple visits or home temple.
    Ashtanga Yoga - this is yoga as described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. This includes ethical concerns along with techniques and practices that include study, devotion, asana, pranayama, and meditation.
    Svadhyaya - this is study of traditional yoga texts. Edwin emphasises the importance of this to increase our knowledge, commitment and exploration in yoga and further to awaken Bhakti or devotion. Edwin places an emphasis on Bhakti as this is a transformational path he has practiced for 40 years.
    Saddhana - this is a term that means yoga practices and it encompasses across any and all yoga schools or categories. In the Yoga Sutras it is defined as having 3 parts, Tapas, Svadhyaya and Ishvara Pranidhana.
    Tapas - intense, generally sweat producing, or taxing yoga pracitces/sadhana. This “heating” aspect of the practices develops control of our senses and vitality as well as mental steadiness.
    Ishvara Pranidhana - this is devotion (bhakti) for God, for the source of yoga knowledge and illumination.
    The Bhagavad Gita - an important book on dharma, yoga, right action, devotion to Krishna and transformation of daily actions to yoga acts of devotion. It is part of the larger work The Mahabharata.
    The Bhagavatam ( also knows as Bhagavat Purana) - The stories (lilas) of young Krishna’s childhood in a cow herding village. Here he delighted and beguiled all those around him who did not know hist true identity as a God, future king, and conqueror of an unjust despot. His childhood pranks are elevated to great devotional revelations.

    I recently listened to Prof Bryant on Vedanta New York's page (during the commemoration of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Abhedananda). It was incredibly enlightening. He is a great speaker and so knowledgeable. Thanks for having him on your show!

    12:25 I like Professor Bryant but he's making false claims here. Advaita Vedanta has always been the most popular interpretation of the Upanishads. Other schools are of Vedanta are not as popular he claims.
    Also he claims that "Atman is eternally individual..". That's just not true. The Upanishadic sentence "Tat Tvam Asi" (That Thou Art) does not make sense if Atman is individual.

    • @maku8075
      @maku8075 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Advaita is not that much popular Adi Shankaracharya is popular not his philosophy the Kashmir shaiviates are very much opposed to Advaita and also the tantric and Shakti are also and then natural opposition The Vaishnavas are very much opposed to Advaita Vedanta.

    This is simply promoting phony yoga

    • @kikiflynn

      Why do you say phony?

    • @dharmayogaashram979
      @dharmayogaashram979 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kikiflynn Please just use logic and compassion. Since, factually, all of real Yoga is all about the Hindu religion; then the teachers of any aspect of Yoga are Hindus. Today's so-called "yoga teachers" are not only not Hindus but most actually deny the Hindu/Yoga connection. Of course, one who is teaching comparative religions is simply doing that. But for the professor to then sanction phony yoga studios and teachers is the height of ignorance.

      Are you actually aware of his personal spiritual yoga practice/sadhana? He is more than just an academic scholar. Don’t assume about people. Yes, many yoga studios are for business and physical exercise; but there is a gradual “Trojan horse” bridging for people… someone goes in for a stretch, later takes up more satvic lifestyle & vegetarian diet, and a year later they are on pilgrimage in holy Dhama :)
