  • Which Junk Silver Dime Is Best For Silver Stacking? Is a Stacking Stormtrooper video discussing why it is important to buy and own junk silver, or also known as constitutional silver, and which junk silver coin is best to own. When stacking silver, one should not only own pure silver bullion, but also junk silver, specifically Roosevelt and Mercury dimes. Junk silver are dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollars (Peace and Morgan) minted pre-1965. So, 1964 and older is what the stacking community refers to as "junk silver". Junk silver contains 90% silver. $1 face value of junk silver coins equals $1.40. There are a couple figures one can use to find the weight in silver. Multiply .715 (or .723 is another figure floating around) by the face value to get the weight in silver. This video discusses which dime, Mercury or Roosevelt is best to own.

    The advantage that Mercs have over Rosie’s is that there are NO Non-Silver Mercs, whereas all Rosie’s minted after 1964 are clad.
    When you see a Merc, there’s no need to check the date or the rim of the coin; you already KNOW it’s 90% Silver

      @Ronald Mitchell they may not necessarily weigh them out at an LCS as you are saying but it’s more or less just something to have in the back of your mind if you are trying to stack the most weight possible. If that is the case, you’re most likely going to want to stack Roosevelt’s that are in better shape with less wear.

    not sure if covered in comments since i did not read them all. my reasoning for preferring mercs over rosies is that i can tell in a heartbeat that ALL mercs are pre 65 and not clad. when buying or selling rosies, you need to look at the dates as well as the sides of the rosies to guarantee pre 65 status. much easier for a faster transaction. same with kennedy halfs, where i have been sold 40% kennedys mixed in with the 90% from local coin shops that use a coin counting machine when i have bought the whole box he had. fortunately since i have good relationships with these lcs's i was able to get a refund for the difference after getting home and checking all the dates. washington quarters have the same issue unless you have a keen eye looking at the sides of the coins. no issues like this at all with earlier versions of all us coins. i really like merc dimes, standing liberty quarters and franklin halfs for this reason. although the larger coin dates are much easier to read than the very small dates stamped on rosie dimes.

    I started my guardhouse dime box a long time ago and decided to make it a Roosevelt dime box specifically for the reasons you stated. My wife decided one year to buy me $50 face in silver dimes one Christmas (which is a great gift), turned out to be all Mercury dimes 😂. I now have a mixed guardhouse dime box that is still half empty.

      That is a good point. And you know what Id do if I caught a sneaky Rosie? Id grab it and yell at it, "How DARE you for trying to sneak in on the silver party!" and I would toss it against the ground and leave it there! Teach that coin a lesson!

    • @stacknandpackn6158
      @stacknandpackn6158 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is something to what you say. There is another flip side to that coin.(Pun intended) When I make large purchases ($100 face value or more) the weight comes into play. I have found that even tho post 64 can be overlooked the diff in weight between the same $ amount between the Rosies and Mercs/barb make up the loss. If you buy $100 face value of Mercs and $100 face value in Rosies the difference in silver weight make up for the loss if you miss a couple of 65 or newer. If your buying a smaller face value it doesn't take long to check dates. The most IMPORTANT part is ALL U.S. Junk is being counterfeited now and all should be checked.

    I'm a stacker so weight matters. 3 grams is a 1/10 of an ounce (almost...if you had enough digits on the scale it may have been closer). In all likelihood, you probably paid a little more for the Mercs as well as they usually come with a little premium. Thanks Stormy!

  • @Silverholic
    @Silverholic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Stormy! I know it's easier to purchase by using a multiple of face value but the best way to do it is agree on a price based on the silver weight. Just weight the coins, multiply by 0.9 and you know your silver content. Then multiply that by the price agreed on and you have exactly what you pay for.

      There are always people who will pay for something they "think" is worth more. Today is a perfect example of the illusion of "collector value" vs Silver value. Age does not necessarily make value. Rarity maybe, but not age. You can check with LCS, online dealers/brokers and they will NOT give you more money when it comes to Mercs. vs Rosie's. The opposite is the case. They will quote weight as the reason to pay you less. Then, will turn around an try to get suckers to pay more for the older coins. Since you are talking silver dimes that have the exact same weight and if they are the exact same cost, I could see choosing the Mercs. I wouldn't pay more for them based on age.

    • @TalkingBullion

    Have to disagree. I'll take Winged Liberty(Merc.) over a Rosie any day. Minimal difference in weight is easily made up for in numismatic value. That's the value of stacking constitutional...IT'S MORE THAN JUST SILVER AND COPPER!!! If your just wanting silver then buy pure silver. To refine the silver out is expensive. Do a video about that cost, and what refiners pay. Is a Winged Liberty worth 6 cents more than Rosie? YES!!! Just try to stay away from extremely slick ones, as they're being sold to you because you'll pay more than the refiners and it saves them shipping and time.

A slicked up no date barber quarter is like having worn shoes with broken laces and holes in them...lol..neaides I lov ethe way a ropps feels when the coins are so new they dont even move and the cap is tight on them like its ready to burst...my mercury dont do that...but at least I get em good enough to fill the tubes...lol

    I am totally in agreement on weight. Weight is every thing when it comes to silver, gold, gun powder, lead, backpacks, wives, and private parts. Collector value only has value to the collector. The 1 thing I would not agree with is the part of using silver in direct purchases. With recent recorded history pre WW2 we have had several hyper inflation scenarios as examples. I would predict that even with the hyper inflation that is going to happen with the U.S.D people will still use the dollar in trade. It would just be exchanging your silver/gold back into the fiat that is being accepted. The only way the U.S.D would not still be circulating would be the total replacement of the U.S. Government such as the Reich in Germany. With DictatorDon being cheered into power, this might be a possible outcome.
