    The peat pellets have a fine netting on the outside that remains and don’t decompose in the ground by the end of the season ...

      The netting also impedes root growth. I always remove the netting before transplanting.

      To add to both of your points (which I totally agree with) last year, after my seedlings emerged, i up planted them and surrounded them with moist soil. Many of my plants died and when I went to empty out the pots, and surrounding soil was moist and the entirety of the expanded pellet was dry as a bone...which of course killed my plants.

    MG Scott, thank you and great point with making sure you identify the cells and orient the tray. It also helps with determining the germination rate. I thought you already started your pepper plants, no? Thank you the education on how most seeds are hydrophobic. I initially had my seeds in a moistened paper towel and placed that inside a plastic container. The issue that I had was that I had it on top of the heat mat; and based on this video, I realized that the seeds probably dried out which is why I had a poor germination rate. Thank you very much

    I buy the pellets on Amazon a big bag of 100. The nursery also has them cheep in bulk. After years if different systems, I've stuck with this one. No the netting doesn't break down but haven't seen a problem with that.

  • @stevefromthegarden1135

    I started with the Jiffy pellets years ago and it's a system that still works. For starting basil, the peat pellets have worked better than starting them in a seed starting mix in plug trays. Write the plant name on a small piece of masking or painters tape and put that on the top edge of the tray. Making a grid on paper is a good idea especially when there are multiple varieties within the row.

      When you go to transplanting them or up potting them, do you remove the netting around them? I found the roots didn’t grow through it? I also found that the plants didn’t do as good when transplanted as others grown without the netting around them. Why do you think that might have been?

    • @stevefromthegarden1135
      @stevefromthegarden1135 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CuriousinNY I have found the roots will start growing through the netting but when I pot them up into my 4" square pots, I remove the netting. It only takes a few seconds to remove it and then you know the roots won't be restricted. If I do see the roots growing through, I will pot them up right away.

    Last year I used the coco pellets and they really don't expand enough to fill the squares. They are horrible, maybe that is why he never showed them at the end. The peat pellets work much better, but still are not good in my opinion.
    What I have learned works best is buying big blocks of coco, the size of a large brick. After hydrating the coco I mix 50% coco and 50% compost. Then I add pearlite, or you could use vermiculite. I prefer pearlite because it drains better.
    The reason this mix is far superior to pure coco is obviously the nutrients. You won't have to add nutrients to this mix and you can let the starter plants stay in the container longer to develop strong roots.

    Hi Scott. 2 weeks ago I finally found Lavender seeds. It says to put in fridge/freezer for 2 weeks.
    I have my own worm casting
    I was going to mix up some potting soil with a bit of casting, Coco coir & perlite. I was looking here to see if you had a Lavender seed video , I stopped at this video. I went on Amazon and found a bag of 36 Jiffy refill pellets for $4. And 1 day delivery.. So I bought 6 bags lol.
    My question is should I sterilize these? If so how do I do it. And do you have a video on Lavender seeds?
    This is my first time with Lavender and those pellets.
    Thank you for all the hard work you do to help us. Cheers from Toronto 🤗

    Hey Gardner Scott
    How high should I place my grow lights above my trays? In general in average

    • @psykedude
      @psykedude 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grow lights should generally be as close as possible without burning the leaves. This usually means a few inches above the plants, raise the lights as the seedlings grow.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In general, 3-4 inches is good, but it depends on the lights. If they generate heat they should be high enough that they don't burn leaves.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Much of the decision comes with experience. Make note of the color difference between dry, moist, and wet peat. When I'm concerned the pellets are too wet I'll squeeze one and see how much water seeps out.

    Once tomato and pepper seedlings emerge from the peat pellets how soon do they need to be transplanted either outside, or into a bigger container inside?

    • @lumpinator
      @lumpinator 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      there's no strict rule for that. for the first 2-4 weeks the seelings can live off of the seed's given nutrients. after that you should either start fertilizing them with liquid fertilizer (water soluble, plant available nutriets at lower concentrations, aming for smaller numbers than 5-5-5 N-P-K) or transplant them into richer soil or potting mix. before you transplant them, they should at least show their first set of true leaves. when you're keeping them in the small cells for a longer time you should transplant them when you see roots coming out at the bottom. that's an indication of the plants soon getting root bound.

    Another gardner uses boiling water as he says he will kill any remote chance of disease...is that necessary? I'm using the big jiffy pellets for tomatoes and am interested in how often i will need to rewater them during 8 weeks

    • @lumpinator
      @lumpinator 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      coco coir is basically inert, so with that there's no need to sterilize it. in regular peat there's often fungus gnats around but in the compressed form i can't imagine that. as long as the plastic dome is on top you won't need to water for at least a couple of days. once the seeds have germinated and you remove the cover you'll have to look at least once a day if they're still moist. with cells: if the top is dry, water from the bottem. with pellets it's quite the same but because of their larger open surface they dry out a bit more quickly. just lift a pellet up that looks dry and if it's pretty light, water. don't let neither the cells nor the pellets sit in water!

    • @pd6569
      @pd6569 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pellets should be sterile, but if you are starting your operation indoors, it would not hurt to use boiling water.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't had any issues with the compressed pellets and don't see a need to use boiling water, but it doesn't hurt if you are concerned about fungus gnat eggs. You'll need to water to keep the pellets moist which depends on your humidity levels.
