  • This is part of my 2020 seed starting series. I show you how to set up and use compressed peat pellet kits to start cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers. I discuss a no grow-light method and if you use grow-lights, how you can best use them. I also discuss when to start cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers indoors and why.

      Point 1. There is no point at all in using boiling water.. Absolutely no reason that is needed at all.
      Point 2: In most countries Peat Pellets are now Coco Coir pellets and no longer contain any peat.

      This is my first year using them, I got almost 100% germination. I got the 72 pellet tray and the 12. Put them on a heat mat in front of a window that gets sun 10 hours a day. It did great with corn, green beans, peas, a bunch of oregano, and an assortment of flowers. Also did a similar thing with actual peat pots and used sandwich bags to cover them.

    I love these. My taproots each grow through the netting without issue, but I also still cut the netting away. I imagine you’re supposed to anyway, it’s only there to hold the peat together before planting.

    Thank you for the video! First year for me in Ontario Canada with the peat pellets, newbie veggie gardener. Started last year with 2 containers for a few peppers and beans, (bought from nursery), they did well, now I have a raised bed for this year. I had a terrible year last year with fungus gnats which I think I inadvertently brought indoors with my plants. I used Miracle Grow soil and didn't know they're notorious for this. I'd put houseplants outside and re-potted them thinking I was doing a good thing, when I brought them back in for winter! Little did I know! So after researching I found these pellets. The boiling water is a good idea. I probably will try the larger ones next time round. It's only for me, so I don't need many. 👍

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Any outdoor bagged stuff most likely has fungus gnat eggs. I always make a sterile mix using boiling water and a starting mix. Good luck!

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you, I just wanted to add that last night I did the boiling water on the small peat pucks by Jiffy, I only did 6 for now. When I added the water the water turned dark immediately from the peat and they almost fell apart! The outside 'netting' isn't plastic or netting as I imagined, it's kinda fragile. Maybe I added too much water, but I fished them out as soon as they inflated and had to scrape up the peat from container after draining water, adding it back into each puck! Learning curve!

    starting seeds outdoors...its last week in April San Diego..50s nights 60s to 70s days.... The advice I got from the garden center was to open the top days, water once a day...then they agreed with me to close the cover nights and cover with a folded over blanket...

    I’m in zone 6b, I have all my hot peppers germinating In wet paper towels in baggies and in propagation tray, on top of a heat mat , I moved the seeds that germinated into jiffy peat pellets and have them in another propagation tray on top of a heat mat , they sprouted but haven’t yet sprouted in my peat pellets 😭😭😭😭😭
    I am doing 24 types of peppers and have 100 hot pepper plants I think I killed lol. I am HOPING since I started germinating them March 10 and it’s now April 1, that maybe by April 30 they will some plant exposed.
    I’ve got about 40 tomato plants which are doing great in peat pellets …

    Before I plant mine I put a piece of masking tape along the side and write with a sharpie what is in the cells but for me, I typically have a full row of the same or at least 2 of the same per row. You can draw a line also if you are splitting the row you get the idea.

      @Gary Pilarchik so you would recommend putting a young seedling in the sun? Just wondering, as this is my 2nd year gardening and last year (my first year) I was told not to do that and to always keep seedlings in the windowsill because they are too fragile for outdoors quite yet. I live in north Texas zone 8A. We are having sunny 50’s-60’s in the afternoon here. I will be starting my seeds this week indoors. I do have a grow light but it’s nothing fancy and I think I will just move them in and out in their dome.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well light is always important as without it they plants get leggy. Plants should germinate into light with 24 hours. But warmth is what speeds up germination and that is true. A house at 65 degrees is perfect for germination. Warmer is even better for peppers.

    • @mrs.t7254
      @mrs.t7254 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @mikenkarie good question! I believe you only water them when the soil on the top of the peat pots is dry. If you touch the soil and it sticks to your finger, then it still has moisture in it. I wouldn’t let them sit in water all the time. Once they absorb enough water that the tops of the soil is wet you can empty it if there is still a lot in there, but unless you’re using way too much water, they should just absorb all of it.
      Another way to tell if they are dry, is that the soil color will be lighter than when it is wet. And also heavier wet than dry.

    I start my cucumbers and squash in the small pellets every year. I put 2 seeds in each small pellet. You’ll have to up-pot within 2 weeks into a larger container. I start my seeds in front of my patio window, so that’s why I use these pellets. Trays take up a lot more space, and I find the small pellets to be very efficient in starting as many plants as possibly in a very small space compared to trays.

      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lamps are key. Let the tops of them dry as much as you can between watering. And if you just started.... on a day over freezing light some direct sun outdoors cleanse the tops. 30 minutes of sun help manage fungus but only if it is early at germination.

    • @teefawnzee
      @teefawnzee 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some ppl sow more than one seed in a cell/pod. When someone does this, they are just increasing the chance of something germinating. If they all germinate in that cell, that's great but chances are they're going to compete for root space/nutrients. So after germinating, you would need to thin or get rid of the other germinated seedlings that look weak or not as nice. It hurts to get thin, but it's in your plant's best interest 😭

    I just planted seeds in my pellets but the directions said to keep the tray out of direct sunlight? I’m confused,does that mean until they start to sprout up from the pellets then they can get direct sunlight from a window or outside? Thanks

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I dont know what it would say that to be honest. Once planted they need direct light or sun or they grow very poorly.

    I have a question to anyone who can answer I bought the jiffy one for my herbs such as chamomile rosemary lemon balm and peppermint. The directions say away from sunlight until germination but here it’s directly under light immediately after putting in your seeds. I’m so confused which one is correct ? I have them in little light with dome. I just planted about an hour ago and it’s my first time. Thanks !!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      IMO disregard the directions. That is because if you have them away from light, and miss getting them under the light, they get leggy. They are looking for light. So I error on having the light present. No harm.

    Should the pods continually have water around the bottom of them? Should they remain soaked or can you even have too much water?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you can have too much water. They need to dry a bit between watering and water should not sit in bottom 24/7.

      Depends on the timing and the weather outside. You might have to but can just drop them as is into a container and fill around the pellet.

    Gary, good morning. I've got these large peat pods growing beautifully. Tomatoes/peppers mainly. There are two plants in each pod. One in each corner. I'd like to split these large pods into two plants , and keep each. Are there any special considerations when doing this? I figure I will gently remove the netting and genyly roll the dirt out to separate the root systems. Can you offer advice or maybe do a 2 min video? Thanks brother. Big fan of your channel. Also in Md. Have a great day.

      Thanks. I am not growing in them but you idea works. For tomatoes if the are well spaced, you can cut the pod down the middle. Good luck. And thanks for watching
