Aquaculture: Small-Scale Lobster Farm // Caluya Island, Philippines

  • Here is a nice example of a small-scale lobster farm. The farm is entirely constructed using native materials. The lobster cages are made of bamboo and covered with nets to protect the lobsters. The goal is to raise lobsters on a small scale with minimal investment, completely free of any artificial fertilizers and medications. There are only two batches of lobsters raised each year, with a six-month gap between them.
The farm is located in a shallow area near a deep channel, where there is a constant current flowing through the cages. This current helps to keep the water fresh and oxygenated, which is beneficial for the lobsters. They are exclusively fed with sea urchins that are collected from the nearby area, providing them with a natural and healthy diet.
One of the biggest challenges is obtaining lobster fingerlings at a fair price. In the Philippines, most lobster fingerlings are caught live from the oceans around the islands, making them seasonal. Additionally, ongoing overfishing and the destruction of natural habitats for lobsters have driven up the prices for these fingerlings.
The operation is run by local fishermen, and this is their first attempt at raising lobsters. There are still many unknowns and a lot to learn, but so far, it has been a surprisingly good start. The mortality rate in the first batch was less than 15%, and it seems that the lobsters are thriving well in their environment. This initiative not only supports local livelihoods but also promotes sustainable practices in aquaculture.

adding some shelters would reduce stress and help to avoid disturbance when moulting ;)
