    Loved your video! You explained everything very clearly. What is the best type of fabric to use for the body and collar of the happi coat? Also, what if I don’t have a serger or overlock machine, what do you suggest?

    • @loreneono3821

      My favorite to use is cotton since it is easiest to use. Poly cotton too but little stiff. I've had good result with 100% polyester but you must be sure to cut on true grain (you can check my video on finding true grain: tear across the grain and be sure to layer carefully without skewing. I stay away from rayon...not worth the trouble. I made a nice one in a silk print. My friend has "clean finished" the collar band by sewing a long edge to the neck edge, then turn the other long edge under 3/8", press the long edge, then encase the previously seen seam and whip stitch.

    Are there written instructions/pattern for the Hapi Coat as well as how much fabric is required?

    • @yurikoono8690
      @yurikoono8690 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can order the written instructions by sending $5 check (payable to Hawaii's Plantation Village) and SASE to: 1661 Kaweloka Street, Pearl City, HI 96782. You don't really need the written instructions, but it can be helpful. For contrast happi, the print fabric needed is 60" length. You'll need solid contrast fabric 1yd. long. You must use seam tape (sold in package) to stabilize the arm area.

      Sorry, this pattern was created as a visual guide to a class I taught. I don't have an electronic payment account. All checks are donated to Hawaii's Plantation Village, a non-profit organization that preserves the history of the Sugar Plantation Immigrants.

    I want to make this happi coat but the print on the fabric goes one way. How do I cut out the material on a one way printed fabric?

    • @yurikoono8690
      @yurikoono8690 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lois, you have 2 options: if the design is not that noticeable, I just cut it as usual and have the front going up and the back going down. But if the design is really noticeable (like figures, or big cranes that look obviously upside down), then I add a seam to the shoulder: cut 2 pieces 30 1/2" long; reverse one piece so that front AND back both face up. Join with 1/2 seam. Press. Now that you have a 60" piece, continue to cut out the happi per instruction sheet. I've done it a few times, but in general, I avoid very obviously one-way prints.
      This is a very versatile pattern. For contrasting sleeves, I've cut the body only (13" across) from the main print, and then cut the "sleeve" from another print, following the dimensions on the pattern.
      I hope this helps

      @@yurikoono8690 Thank you. I was thinking I had to have 2 pieces of fabric making sure the one for the back is flipped. And I would have to drop the pattern 1/2" so that there will be a seam at the top (shoulder seam going down to the sleeve). Now all I have to do is receive the pattern from you folks. I am anxiously awaiting for the pattern and instructions to arrive.

    If ordering this pattern (through the above mentioned address, right?), does it come with adult and kid sizes? Could one make the sleeves a bit 'wider' so this looks more like a haori than a hapi?

    • @loreneono3821
      @loreneono3821 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pattern is for adult medium to large...also includes size small which could fit a child size 14, maybe. The sleeve is quite wide...since it's all based on measuring, you can easily adapt it and design it to fit your needs. Cut it out of an old sheet and try it out until you get your desired look. The pattern just has the same info as the video.

    Because the fabric is folded, does this mean that I can only use fabrics without nap? Thank you!

    • @loreneono2252
      @loreneono2252 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      (1) If your fabric has nap, your side seam will be going opposite direction and will not look good. You can create a shoulder seam and make a pattern for front and back, and cut separately. (2) For directional print fabrics, it's OK having the front go one way and the back print going upside down as long as the print is busy enough and not too noticeable (I've done it many times and no one notices).
