It can be discouraging. But, people do not just watch for the highs - they also watch for the lows and feel like they are going on this journey as well. We all also learn from these things. I hope to go from 7 to around 20 this year. I always tune in and watch!
Jared, before putting an effort, and splitting them again please sit down and think about : here we NEVER put more than 50 hives (normally 30)in a single location UNLESS there is a huge crop cultivation you need to pollinate. .Bees travel a certain distance, and there is a maximum amount of nectare and pollen per hectares. If you put more bees than the amount that can feed by themselves in a certain area, they will struggle to grow in numbers so they will not be ready for overwintering So, my little suggestion is that you take some of those hives, and establish another location on the opposite part of your homestead or elsewhere at a reasonable distance ( at least 3 miles)
Thanks for the advice man, I’ve actually got permission for a yard for honey production 5 miles away that I plan on expanding to this year or next. But right now all my hives are Nucs so I can probably keep higher numbers?

Looks like we both are in the same boat ..I too lost more hives in my first winter than I thought I would ..however I learned some very valuable lessons .. for me I believe or I now know that I split way to late and also I didn’t feed enough pre winter to sustain those I had starve out ..I’ll do a much better job this year ..as will you ..!! Keep at it man! It’s a numbers game, don’t be discouraged. A month from now you’ll be wishing you had more drawn comb, just to keep the survivors from swarming lol. The cows knocking them over freed up those combs, and because of that, you can be reasonably sure they didn’t die from a brood disease. Might be time to think about securing more yards too. The carrying capacity for any given spot might not be as high as we’d expect. For example it turns out I have a commercial beekeeper neighbor by the home yard and didn’t know until recently. Good luck this year I’m willing to bet you’re going to have a ton of bees!

Don’t get discouraged man. Bob Bonnie has been bigger into carnolians. It took me 4 years to get to 50 hives and I haven’t even counted dead outs. I’ve heard 20% is the norm. During inspections I’ve learned to just look for the signs of a queen instead of searching until I find her. I’m hoping you make this a business also so I’m rooting for ya! Never ceases to amaze me how helpful and down to earth beekeepers are! Keep it up bro!

30 is not bad for such an aggressive split, keep feeding and build a plan. Use some to build others like brood factories, having so many in one spot means they won’t have enough natural forage to build fast, so artificial stimulation will be needed if you want to grow them and not just survive.
Beekeeping isn't easy. You can keep growing your colonies and hopefully leaning from your mistakes. A lot milder weather down there than here in Canada. I would definitely recommend only having a maximum of 50 in a bee yard. Fall feeding and medicating a must!!!
I feel your worry I started with 1 and caught 4 swarms from it and made splits up till august and ended with 16 and 1 from my dad but thank God I have just lost 1 for now??? We will see. I been laying the sugar water and sugar to mine every warm day. Im excited to see how you do!
Here in Australia pushing 35. I think its possible to get 10 from 1 hive in a year and thats from wise keepers. Constant feeding brood boosting supplements and sugar syrup for comb production. If i had a walk in freezer with stickys "extracted" frames for expanding nucs with good laying queens i can see the potential of 10 hives from one in a year.
Sometimes beekeeping will break your heart. I’ve been beekeeping for 15 years in Savannah, TN and lost several small clusters to that cold weather this year. They just couldn’t move to the food.
Yo, bee dude up in Ohio. Based on what I can see, you're in a forested area without a huge amount of forage. Looks also to me like way too colonies in one place. Splitting them too fast before they've grown and established. And lastly, with colonies of the size I can see, they all need a thick set of sugar bricks over them to get thru the winter. A frame or two of honey is essentially nothing. Especially to one side. They're starving out. And or dying from small numbers and can't keep warm. When I set up smaller ones for winter if I have them, it's not in brood box. End of season I move all the brood if any, into 6 frame nuc boxes. 3/4 pine. Full 8 lb frames of honey on the outers. If there are a few more frames of brood, I have bottomless addition 6 frame boxes to go on the first. Remove all the empty redundant frames. Making these as compact as possible.. Warm and toasty. Any slots left open in the upper tier, fill with honey. If you haven't got the honey, have ready so very heavy syrup, like 1:2, and fill drawn comb with it. Then on top of that apartment, add a 2-1/2 rim spacer with 3/4 vent holes covered with mesh. Fill it with 2+inch sugar bricks. Toss the lid on. Once mine are past robbing season in the fall I leave the entrance about 3". Easier to clean the dead out. And don't forget to keep the snow off if any. If the entrance is closed from snow, they're dead in 24hrs. Biggest issue we have now is these warm spells. Laying starts waaay to early. Then is crashes cold. Remember, "Winter" for them starts when the food is gone. And is over when the the Silver Maples, Dandelions and Snow Drops are blooming. Up here in Dayton, that's 5-6 months without forage. So for smaller colonies, you need to lay up solid stores for them. And be prepared to add more. Just my observations. Jon's Got Hives.

Last year I started with 3 colonies coming out of winter..bought 1.. grew up to 15...thought I'd hit my target of 45....then a bear wiped out 12...after all damage was fully accounted for, down to 1.... sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Just pick up and move forward from where you are.

Im fixing to do a few double screen board splits, i noticed capped drone so hopefully by the time new queen is born and ready to fly/mate it will work.....i hope. Double screen split last year qas successful but it was 1st week of March.
Id rotate some of the weak hives to the strong hives spots, like bob Binnie does on his latest video, it will gain the field force. I forgot that trick and will probably do that first then in a few week start double screen board splits.

And electric fence is real cheap way to keep animals out, just 4 post, one or two strands wire and a solar fence shocker
