Building a Beekeeping Business from 6 Hives

Hi Im Jared Brubaker, I’ve had bees for 3-4 years but was a bee haver not a bee keeper because last winter all 5 of my colonies died. But im glad for the experience and now I’ve decided to take it serious and take it all the way to making money🤞I’ll sell bees until I can afford to make honey😁 Thankfully I can learn from the best on TH-cam like Bob Binnie, Kaymon Reynolds, Mike Palmer and others...

    I add a frame of brood and some resources to my nucs so that when they hatch out they have the wax of those youngsters to draw with, it saves time waiting for the queens own brood to hatch out, I also wax the plastic foundation of the new frames preferably with new white wax just to give them a start.

    Thanks, I bet those have exploded by now. I got ten new queens from Blue Ridge Honey (Bob Bennie) last month and they filled those ten nucs in just about 5 weeks. I did have drawn comb. I sold one and when I went to put it in an EZ nuc I decided I needed to keep the rest for myself. They were just doing so, well. They are in 8 frame hives now. And, now, I'm adding honey supers. I usually run ten frames but, a few years back I thought 8 frames would be easier to work. Not for me! You're right about honey. It takes a lot of effort. I have a 12 frame motorized extractor and it's taken my wife and I a couple days work to get 10-10 frame mediums into 5 gallon buckets. You really, need to selll some of those nucs if you can, it's a LOT of work to expand too fast.

    Hi Jared, I'm no hater here. Free advice. Learn how to grow your hives healthy first. You can't make bees without honey first. Let em build up really strong in the 5 frame nucs, add a second box. When it's full add a 3rd box. When it's bursting with bees and honey, then make your 5 frame splits strong. You will need healthy strong production hives first. Learn how to make good production hives first. Then grow your nucs/resource hives second. Make your splits from strong splits. The hives have to be able to make honey before they are split. Honey isn't a byproduct, it's the life of the hives and any operation. Splits are the byproduct of great hives. And splits are resources for production hives, and are best for making good splits, only after they are strong, and making honey themselves. You can't make money constantly feeding hives. The bees have to fend for themselves. Of course you need to feed the baby splits., and treat for varroa mites. Only til they have good capped brood, and a strong work force, and producing honey and abundant brood enough to split. You can reach out to me at thomasfarms@gmail.com . Ill be happy to share my number with you there, and I'd be happy to assist in any way I can. I'm from north Alabama myself. I'd like to see you succeed. Good luck, Richard

    Jared I think you will find if you cover your feeder bucket with another box and lid other robbing bees can’t get to them , the fact that they were leaking and bees could get to it started the robbing , lesson if you cover those buckets with box covers and lids problem solved ,also I think a lack of a nectar flow is why they were so hungry for it as well and yep they will rob the heck out of what ever they can find in times when nectar etc drys up or isn’t much around, bee keeping’s fun , and the bees are great teachers to shows we don’t know everything lol. Happy bee keeping .👍

    I'm pretty sure i did everything wrong first 7yrs, then after watching Kaymon and Bob and learning how to "take care of Gods bees", things really went from bad to best. So mention any problems yoi encounter and im sure i can tell you what not to do , lol. I try and share things that made major improvements for me and bees. One more game changer was Robs 18v OA instantvap, major improvement when i started treating for the varoa destructor (the invisible problem i didn't know every beekeeper faces). Bezt $500 ever spent. Now i think he has a newer version thats a little cheaper. If you dont have one and cant afford let your followers know and i bet we can chip in to get you one.

    Come on Jared, when you're starting out on a new business, you should always listen to anonymous commenters on the Internet, over some guy like Bob Binnie. I mean Bob only has 2000 colonies, in 7 states. He's got a bunch of full time employees, but anybody can do that. 😂😂😂😂 Bob is the man, as far as I'm concerned, and you're doing excellent. I hope when I get started, I can do as well as you are. Keep working those bees, and keep making these videos, you're helping guys like me.

    Check out bobs double hives or Ians steplers the power of 6s or mike Palmers videos With those methods you can make a bunch of honey and make nucs to sell at the same time . These methods share the field bees and grow fast as the bottom bees keep the top hive warm . IMHO if you are worried about them getting too big before you get back to them put a brood chamber underneath to give room to expand and reduce swarming then when they start to fill the bottom box and may start to lay in it and the weather is nice reverse them.

    • @JaredBeekeeping
      @JaredBeekeeping 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I do plan on doing both in the future but can’t get into honey big time until I have the building/equipment. I’m planning on making some honey this year.

      You can use your extra hone to make splits . If you arent ready for honey producton split split split Sell if you have too many . Or exreact you honey put it barrels and store it . Its a lot of work but it becomes routine

    Ha there's no such thing as bad comment helps grow your channel I finally sub today .. I've been watching you Sense you started. Look like hungry kind hearted person to me. Building your own equipment shows your hungry.. spring feed fondant or something inverted it's like night and day you be about at swarming right now . Last year you had problems with mating it's not going to be different this year.. those doubles won't work like that trust me I've got over hundred. Need to set up mating boxes in tall grass for best results. That reduces robbing. Almost need to start with both at the same time or bees don't work. Never take from one side give to the other. I'll teach you how to do queen right starter with that equipment later. Don't need to all that no queen starter thing

    Patience and timing is the game with bees. Everything takes two years.. and you're doing good. On the single second hive you watched.. when you see an empty frame as last and the frame next to it full of capped honey.. switch their places.. put the honey out and the empty in. The queen will go lay in it as soon as the bees clean it for eggs.. usually the next day. And those kind of doubles are great for comb drawing.. always use the top box for it and they will rarely draw drone comb. Patiently, don't put more than 2 at time. Mine are drawing two wax sheets in two days.. sometimes with eggs already in

    You do what YOU want to do. Don't take crap off of people online. Just block and roll!!! Selling bees is a great way to start. First off, you get a master class in bee husbandry which everything else depends on. Second, in New England, 5 frame overwintered nuts go for $200-250. 150-175 for nuts that have not been over wintered. So you can make a lot of capital quickly. Moving a lot of honey takes time to establish and like BB said, equipment intensive. .

I know the world if full of know it alls and people that have to say negative stuff but don’t let that stuff get you down! I really admire what you’re doing! And you should be proud of what you have accomplished I live in a remove high desert of Nevada .. But I find joy in watching others across the states keep bees as well … we all have different struggles
