If you follow your own plan and make the game you want it to be, the game will be legendary. We have seen what happens to games that bend to the pressure of expectations *ahem, cyberpunk, ahem*.
instead of sending death threats to dani, which pressures and makes him unmotivated, send him milk which speeds up karlson development by 99x, keeps dani healthy, and motivated
The people who send death threats, thinking it will help, are the same people who will complain that it's too expensive and shit on it to somehow 'prove' that it should be free and not worth the money. The game looks great and should be paid for. Good luck Dani!
Hey Dani, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you. Over the years, your videos have been a huge source of motivation for me. As someone learning game development, it wasn’t just your projects or Klarkson that inspired me, but the way you approached problem-solving with such positivity and humor. Your passion for what you do has always come through, and it’s been a big part of what kept me going when things got tough.I’m really grateful for all that you’ve shared with us. I know there’s been a lot of pressure around Klarkson, but I want you to know that, for me, it’s not about the game or any specific project-it’s about you. Watching your videos made me feel connected to someone who loves what they do, and that’s what mattered most.I hope you're doing well and that your passion for making games is still alive. Whether or not you continue sharing videos, just know that what you've already done has meant a lot to people like me. Thanks again, Dani. Wishing you all the best.
I feel so happy that Dani is defending himself- and also how his community is appreciative of him, which gives me lots of hope that this wont be a cyberpunk situation- (being forced into releasing the game to the point of death threats, and then getting accused for being lazy and making a bad game when they are forced to release it early)
@@dawne2780 yet, it was still released early, was insanely huge in terms of map size and content, and wasnt that bad of a game, but when expectations are this high, everyone will be disappointed no matter the outcome
Take all the time you need, Dani! You don't have to worry about letting us down, even what you had so far looked more than perfect! Maybe just taking a bit of time to sit back and *not* think or stress about the game for a little bit will help you start working on it again, one little thing at a time. At any rate, just hang in there, and keep being the awesome game dev we all know you are!
As a software engineer, I completely understand the pressure and the scale of the task to make a video game. The fact is, very few games, even Indie games with a single developer make it past being a "cool side project" for someone. One person can create a good concept, some good mechanics, or even an arcade-style game, but when it comes to fleshing out a game with a story and levels, and having the polish that people expect, that just normally isn't feasible to achieve with one person. You've done the hard part though. You've made the beginnings of a game which is truly unique, and you've done a stunning job at marketing that game, and clearly many people are willing to pay money for it. That's a fantastic opportunity to seek investment for it, and employ developers to help you realise your game. Having others work on it for you might seem like giving away your project, but bear in mind that anyone you employ will follow your own direction, and seeing progress occur on the game without having to make every single change yourself can be huge in terms of motivation and seeing finishing the game as a realisable goal. The Wikipedia article for Portal suggests that "no more than 10 people" worked on developing it over 2 years and 4 months. Given that may be a game of similar scope, it's worth bearing in mind how much needed to go into making it, and I would definitely say that would be infeasible with a single developer. Just having a couple of developers and an artist makes a huge difference. It's also important to put realistic constraints on what you want to be part of the game, what is out of scope, and to be very aware of feature creep. It's very easy to always want to improve something indefinitely before releasing, especially when it's your pride and joy, but no one ever releases a perfect game. Having deadlines and clear scope requirements are vital if you actually want to see something be released. You'll be very aware of most of the bugs present, but so long as you dial in the core mechanics, many people will very much enjoy the result. And lastly, just be careful what you sign on if seeking investment. Be careful not to give away creative control of your project. Investors may put deadlines in place, or other constraints. You may choose to go down a crowdfunding route, but I think this can also be dangerous to the integrity of your product if scope and deadlines are not strictly managed. Long story short, I think it would be a great decision to seek investment and hire some developers, and I think your fans would be very appreciative of such a decision. I think this route would allow Karlson to be much more than it ever could be with just yourself working on it, but whatever route you choose, I wish you best of luck with it.
@@Alieldinofficial”unnecessary” bro do u understand the fact that games that have large teams working on it take less time? dude if one dude who is terrible at models but is good at programming how do u expect the game to look good
The fact that this actually happens is making me so glad, working on a game is so hard sometimes, you subconsciously open the product and just sit there, even after literal weeks of just planning out what to do next
I make comics online and now I finally regaining a somewhat want to make them again, but I want to do others thing and that. Be glad that you can focus on a certain project and not just start so many at one point. Unless you do that but with games, because I am making an infiltration game yet I also want to make an open world crime game, yet I have to stay focused on one.
People need to calm down and let Dani do what he wants to do. Sending him death threats and making a big deal out of it isn't gonna make it better. Edit: (What have I done)
@@storm-_-6536 how do you know its a joke? Even if the death threats are just jokes death threats are never ever EVER excusable. If you truly believe that then you should probably go touch some grass
it has been 1 year, and I am happy that you get to relax and think through what you wanted to do, I hope for one of these dani2 videos at least but it is your choice of when you want to return back to the internet:)
The reason I like Dani's channel and his games is because he puts alot of his personality into them and I think many people that are waiting for the game are expecting your style and nothing more.
One thing I often do in any creative process is getting whatever is in my mind out of me, and THEN putting it in place. It helps me a lot in getting things done and, most importantly, to get myself in what I'm doing, since, with that, I'm not twisting myself in any way for the sake of fitting the concept I'm trying to present. And the coolest part is: I'd argue you can present what you want a lot more accurately by doing this then directly explaining your idea! I think I just described what art is :)
The thing is, we are all memers, we don't expect a gigantic game, we just need a game from the one and only Dani, just do your way and we will be happy
Its sounds more like he doubts himself which I 100% and it makes it impossible to work. There's this never ending cycle of it and what I try doing is just getting up to move and think. Time myself to do tasks without stopping, then taking a break, repeat.
You shouldn’t feel bad about disappointing us. What you’ve done is beyond most people’s ideas and expectations of a solo dev, and if you ever feel worried about it, just think about Battlefield 2042
Anxiety can cause someone to freeze up and not do the thing that they want to do. One way to help with this is to split the project into "bite-sized" chunks. When you decide to work on Karlson. Just choose ONE task to work on. That should be your only goal, doing the one small task you decided on. Don't worry about anything that comes after. Focus only on the small chunk. This approach helped me get over my anxiety lockups. I hope it can help you as well.
I do coding a lot, and this might actually help a lot! I do lockup because when making something like my dream game, it's hard to do things and then think about how it affects the lore, the functionality of the game, keeping the player engaged, and the big one; bugs. I'll try that "bite sized" strategy when my controllers get replaced. Thanks!
it's definitely a good idea for Dani to not see working on Karlson as working on this big project that practically his whole fan base has been waiting for for the longest time, because it creates a mental barrier that ends up being one of the biggest challenges of working on big assignments and projects. I think when he works on Karlson, he should do his best to perceive his work as simply completing individual, unrelated tasks. It may seem contradictory, but it is much less stressful to be able to look at the parts as just parts, and not parts *of a whole*.
I've always wanted to make games ever since I played my first level. After watching your "made in this amount of time" game dev videos I really felt like I could do it. Ever since ive been working on learning how to game dev and the lot, and watching your progress with karlson and other games of the like has really inspired me. With my little experience in the field I know its a lot of work, and i know that whenever it comes time to release karlson it will be how you want it to be, its your dream game, we're just coming on the ride with you -sincerely someone you inspired cheers :D
The Karlson bit was actually reasonable. I feel bad for you: receiving death threats for not developing a game is just insane. Keep up the good work man 😉!
Next devlog should be titled "F* everyone's expectations. Let's do this" and then you proceed to do whatever you want. Also, usually when I feel unmotivated, I find that throwing out the to-do list and working on what you feel like helps you get started.
What if when you think you've finished karlson, Billy just frickin transforms into a giga version of himself stronger than willy and drilly(if he becomes a canon boss) (and any other bosses that will be in karlson) and tells you he was the one who trapped karlson in the facility and was the one behind everything? That would be the world's biggest plot twist!
I as a fellow programmer understand the part of literally staring at a project knowing what to do but in actuality doing nothing. Hard to get back into it after breaks
I bet Karlson was another joke game Dani was going to make, but the hype got out of his hands and he felt like he needed to do a good game this time, but he is scared that he cant with people expectations At the time Dani mentioned 3D karlson for the first time he could barely code things, so he practiced coding with games like Muk and Crab Game Basically if Dani says he won't continue making Karlson i wont be upset because i know things got out of hands for him, and we as his fans should support him because making a good game isn't easy So lets have patience gang, wheteher Karlson is the best game of the century or not, Dani is working hard on it, making a game that we dont deserve honestly Thanks Dani for making really enjoyable games, that was really cool
I know this is really late, but I’m glad that you told us about this. I personally know the game will be good, regardless of how finished it is. Maybe, if you think it’s the right choice, you might want to hire another programmer. Just, don’t rush the game. Let’s all just let Dani develop a good game instead of pressuring him into something he can’t do.
No it’s longer for crab game and muck because of days of changing code and new content fixing bugs rewriting it all and play testing so I and thousands of others will respect his reasons and we won’t pressure him the game won’t be fun if you all pressure a person who codes alone and makes good games so please don’t say that to him because that can make him have more pressure and can make others annoyed like me I mean brainfood47 had a point of how to show that we care and we will wait so please don’t do this to a talented person I also agree with remand dicksons opinion it is rather straight to the point I like it
People need to understand that putting pressure on a developer or a creator weighs them down and make them unmotivated, sending death threats and hate comments and emails won't do anything but make things worse, making games are hard and Dani is just trying to be positive and is trying his best to finish it Anyways drink milk, hit billy and beat your willy👍 He broke the streak....i never thought this day would ever happen...
Dani, you probably won't see this, but if you do, please remember: Karlson is YOUR game. Make it however you want to. We, the Boners™️ promise you, that as long as you put your heart in it, we will appreciate it, no matter the result. I hope you find inspiration to have fun again in making Karlson. Cheers, A subscriber from the start
I've always felt like the reason Karlson hasn't come out all these years later is because it isn't the #1 most wishlisted in fact it fell to like #30 now i think
So, anyone ever wondered if Karlson has a father named Karldad that went to get milk but failed? Edit: Karlson lore, here we go Many years have passed since that day. A tragic day for two sons and a single chad father. The father, named Karldad one day went out to go get milk for his beloved son, named Karlson. But little do Karlson realize, that was the last time he saw his father, a journey to buy milk for his precious son but to never return. And now, Karlson have train for many years since his father's disappearance to buy mik. Many people who see him would nickname him, Karlson The Milkman. As Karlson was about to start his venture to buy milk for his brother, named Karlbrother, he was kidnapped by a school of robots, blocky and kinda thicc. And when he woke up, he was placed in a chamber to where he has to parkor and shoots gun blazing to nearby blocky robots enemy, to escape, get the milks, and go home to his brother, Karlbrother.

Hey Dani ! You might not see this, however, I want to tell you that because of your videos, I have gotten into game dev and programmation and I wanted to thank you for that. Thank you for the inspiration, the motivation and the funny memes. I really hope the best for you and your career as a game dev and a TH-camr.

dani, take your time with karlson, the pressure may seem great, and anticipations may be at an all time high, but no matter what you are able to over come the obstacle ahead. You have the power, and you have shown said power in your devlogs for the content. Whatever karlson already is, it's very good, we believe in you. The base for karlson you have layed out is almost perfect for the game you're building here, and whatever karlson becomes, I can guarantee with the amount of effort you are putting into it, it will be great.
Dani, that’s all people have been wanting for the past year. Just some news about the game, even though you haven’t worked on it; that’s at least news to us. So thank you :) Take your time with Karlson, we can wait to play it. Your mental health, and you enjoying the game making process and doing it for yourself is way more important :)
Hey Dani, here's a little advice, I can Imagine how busy you might be but if you work just on the mechanics and have someone make the maps (You don't need to suffer with baking lights) OR You could take a break from EVERYTHING (TH-cam etc,) for like as long as you need then start working on Karlson. Also don't worry, we know it is an indie game (Who is expecting a AAA game?) and will wait as long as you need.
yo guys i was watching some youtube and one of the ads was the karlson trailer and so i watched all of it rare occasion of intentionally not skipping an ad
Honestly since the first karlson video, I watched the devlogs because your enthusiasm and humor was really entertaining. Never thought the game will be the messiah of video games. It was just really fun to see someone excited about coding and game making. Do whatever you feel like Dani!
4:37 This is the exact thing i've felt as a gamedev that's extremely hard to explain. There's just countless times where I open up my IDE and i just feel tired and unmotivated. The only solution to that which i've found is just working when you really feel like working on it and aren't pushing yourself to work on it.
@@yugajain5489 even if there aren't people pressuring you, people still do that. I'll take myself as a example of what i experienced : I made a game and it was going well but my passion for my game disappeared as i continue finishing the game. At the end i didn't finish it
Dang sorry to hear about the things you’ve been feeling and going through around karlson. hope you find your stride soon, looking forward to it whenever it’s finished :)
Dani -- you are not alone! Many of us can relate to starting a project, then opening the project file, messing with it for a few hours, but in the end changing nothing. Sucks that you have mounds of expectation on top of it. Your catch-22 that the longer you wait leading to larger expectations making you want to delay it further sounds really rough. I agree with everyone else when we say we support you tho i wish people could see how dificult it could be to do something you enjoy when people expect you to do something high and mighty while giving you a'lot of pressure thus not allowing you to do what you love.
@@kinghashbrown7998 I used to believe these death threats were real but now I just assume its a joke by edgy teenagers or a joke that the individual missed.
I swear every person who doesn't finish something always uses the "death threats" excuse. Even if you are getting those, oh well, everyone who is popular gets them. Just say that you would rather take a break or something rather than saying that you're getting death threats
Yo I feel that so hard, whenever someone TELLS me to work on something, I suddenly feel extremely unmotivated, idk what it is lol. Keep doing u dude, work on what you want to work on and don't let the internet bully you, or anyone in your life for that matter.
Dani I don't know how much this'll do to help with your anxiety about Karlson, but take all the time that you need. We will always be here to watch you talk what you create whether it's a Karlson devlog or a video about some random game you decide to make that has a weird name like Muck. For me at least, it is seeing whatever you create that makes me smile. There isn't a week that has gone by since I started watching your channel that I haven't thought about something you said that has made me laugh out loud. Seeing Dani talk about what you're doing with all your weird jokes is just that cool. Also seeing the impact that your games have had on the world, it is astounding seeing how many people you have touched! ...Not in a weird way though. I look forward to playing whatever you create. Karlson is a journey that we know will take time because it is not a small project. Take as much time as you need and with any game you want to make; you get better as a game developer the more you do too. We've all felt the feelings you have about Karlson before. So take as much time as you need because we will always be here to support you on your journey. And most important, remember to drink your milk, like a true bonner.
I feel like 8:35 is quite accurate in my case. 8) Take your time, Dani, you’re doing very well for yourself and you’ve got lots of people just here to support you on your journey.
Man, I'll be serious. One year ago I met your channel and it changed completely my point of view in gamedev or even in programming in general. I decided to do the things that I love to do and always wanted. So thank you Dani, and do your best. You're awesome.
Hey, Karlson looks like an absolutely great game that took so much time. Take as much time as you need. Hopefully you can look at all the pressure as a great reason to start working on the game! Love your videos, they always make my day! Good luck man!
Oh. That sucks, man. I'm sorry to hear that you are under this much pressure. I've actually stumbled across this channel last week, and of course I got really excited for that game as well. I guess that's just what happens you get when you are an epic gamer and an awesome content creator. I always wondered how you got the time to both develop those amazing works and produce videos with so much editing. For what I can see, you have a deep passion for Karlson. That fills me up with joy, because it is an amazing piece. I would never like to see that passion fade away, and I believe to be speaking for the whole community. We all know the quality of your work, we are not here to criticize anything. Take your time, man. As always, drink your milk and have fun. See ya!
Man, I feel you on the part where you talked about how you tell yourself what you wanna do and stuff. That's kinda happening with me on my small fan game, what I would recommend is to basically just do small parts of it through the day, make concepts, models, whatever. That's whats mainly helped me with making my game even if it is 100x smaller than Karlson. Either way dani, eventually Karlson will get done and it'll be the best day ever (also if your interested in my fan game, which I doubt you are but still, its a fan game of Ian Campbells bleed series, next month or so i'm going to have a trailer so if you are interested check that out when it comes out) That's all I got for you dani, thanks for reading this comment, and have a great day!

What a time to be alive, we are finally out of the loop. Communities are no doubt a pain, crab game got way bigger than expected and that made Dani's following grow, but that doesn't mean we as subscribers are entitled to get him to work for us, we gotta accept Dani will work on the game at his own pace, he will update it the way he wants and with the mechanics he wants. We all know there will be some mechanics people will not enjoy as much or changes to be desired for those who are not able to manage it, but to quote a certain game that would fit all of this dilemma "This is his story and you are not part of it".
I would literally crunched and eat all of those death threats just to make dani POST onr singular video that i could tear up in joy how dani is finally back😢

ok, I don't know if anyone has pointed this out, but HOW does he manage to keep such a straight face while saying "Its at the point where I am getting death messages in my inbox"
Hey man , I'm a 3d designer , I'm 26 and I've been working on games for 5 years. I know exactly what you're saying. Being pressured into completing your project that you're passionate about just takes away your passion , it can be quite dangerous. Here's hoping people will be nicer to you
From limited experience as a beginning game dev: it's actually really hard to continue a project that you set down for maybe 2 months, don't even mention a YEAR! It's really hard to remember what you were doing, 'cause you have to work on a train of thought (that might just be me due to my ADHD). But trying to remember where you left off is really hard.
Dani working on Karlson is like Valve working on HL2: Episode 3 or straight up Half-Life 3. Too high of an expectation and scared of it being bad and not meeting the expectation
I'll be honest, even if whatever comes of Karlson does turn out as a "failure", for whatever definition of the term people want to use, I'd still be looking forward to a follow-up video from you about things you learned during the process and things you learned from the end result
Good luck Dani, I cant imagine being in your shoes. Just take your time and do what you want. I understand game dev is hard, I've been doing it for 7 years, and I never finished or released a project. You have a great fan base, maybe advertise a patreon in a video as an alternative to devlogs.
note to self: keep expectations on Karlson low... "its just crab game, but with story and maybe baked lights" ...does that work? also if you want karlson, don't send death treats to the ONLY person making the game.
@@dhruvagarwal4477 Lights cooked in the oven at 180° C for 25 minutes. Kidding, obviously. They're lights that aren't dynamic (i.e. don't move), so they're "baked" into the level textures themselves while making a game, this way your computer doesn't have to calculate exactly how the light is working while you're playing the game. Less calculation = more FPS. Baked lighting also tends to look better than simpler dynamic lighting.
yea the amonut of people are concerned about the game and not him and then ask "where is dani?" and they really dont know he quit because of them giving him back lash
Hey Dani, I think streaming while working on Karlson would help. The chat keeps you motivated. And you can actively talk about what your doing so you don’t get side tracked. You don’t even have to show what your working on in case you want to keep that for a video. Just your webcam and a chat box.
Maybe he can make like, the try not to laugh while he is working on karlson, like they don't see what he is doing but he sees the chat and the videos donated, they can be videos memes anything.
This is actually a very interesting method to try, I second this if he wouldn't mind streaming, don't even have to be talking all the time either since the donations with videos would keep everything active
Take your time with Karlson, you’ve made 2 of the biggest steam games in the past year. As a unity game developer myself I totally get the opening a project and just sitting there not getting anywhere on it.
Stumbled upon this video and as someone who loves all of your work and being someone who Works in game dev.. Please take all the time you need. People have short attention span and they whislisted the game and probably kind of *wait for it* but in the background. I feel the reason why people ask you whenever you go is because they just *remembered* they are *waiting* for it so I dont think it's malicious. When it comes to people making threats - fuck you. This is what kills the best developers and creativity - pressure where it DOES NOT need to be. No one should rush you. I think this game will be the best if you will enjoy making it. I hope you had fun with other titles you made because they were amazing and I know for sure that Karlson will be amazing only if you will want to work on it - then the magic happens. I get something like that as an ADHD person (not saying you are or diagnosing someone) pretty often and I feel the struggle. Just please focus on your own pace and I just know that when the time comes, you will nail it :DD And drink milk, it'll help
Thing about motivation is like reading when you were a kid, do it on your own you enjoy it and you feel productive, you get told to do it once, then you throw the book in rage and burn it to hell
If we don’t start treating Dani right we ain’t ever getting Karlson.

Yeah
What a heartfelt comment that Dani probably didn't even read
You don't need a couple of developers, just an artist is enough. Having multiple programmers is unnecessary.
That a very touching pile of words you got there
@@Alieldinofficial”unnecessary” bro do u understand the fact that games that have large teams working on it take less time? dude if one dude who is terrible at models but is good at programming how do u expect the game to look good

Been having problems with starting passionate web projects. I think you've perhaps helped me too, thanks!

As Karlson was about to start his venture to buy milk for his brother, named Karlbrother, he was kidnapped by a school of robots, blocky and kinda thicc. Dani : *doesn’t accept to do the “that was really cool” meme*
Me : *Visible Confusion*
He's probably getting sick of it, it's very repetitive
Let that guy rest he looks like he is very tired
bro need a break he deserves
My man just needs a break c'mon
Y’all acting like doing the meme is a lot of effort lol all he has to do is record himself saying “wow, that was really cool” lmao
I would literally crunched and eat all of those death threats just to make dani POST onr singular video that i could tear up in joy how dani is finally back😢
“The expectations are very high”
Well, it is infact the 12th most wishlisted game on Steam..
@Halit efe Öztürk True and he is only developer
Man I do not care if you take years or even a decade to finish this game, all i know is you inspired me to become a literal game developer i have finished so many games i know this is cringe but no matter what keep working dont think about anything keep going until you finish this masterpiece even if its bad its ok man atleast you're free but no matter what you have to keep going bro. i'll be waiting. We will be waiting for karlson.
Can you send me a link to the games
ok, I don't know if anyone has pointed this out, but HOW does he manage to keep such a straight face while saying "Its at the point where I am getting death messages in my inbox"

Dude, that stalling out right when you sit down to get started is the reason I almost failed every course last semester.
Dani working on Karlson is like Valve working on HL2: Episode 3 or straight up Half-Life 3. Too high of an expectation and scared of it being bad and not meeting the expectation
Damn you made a good comparision.
I'll be honest, even if whatever comes of Karlson does turn out as a "failure", for whatever definition of the term people want to use, I'd still be looking forward to a follow-up video from you about things you learned during the process and things you learned from the end result
No matter what game it is, i will play it and will be in my heart. Anyways it's gonna release next year probably on Feb 30 or year 69420
ok
me too
if it is a complete piece of shit i wouldn't care i would still enjoy it cus ,multiplayer
Good luck Dani, I cant imagine being in your shoes. Just take your time and do what you want. I understand game dev is hard, I've been doing it for 7 years, and I never finished or released a project.
You have a great fan base, maybe advertise a patreon in a video as an alternative to devlogs.
0:14 I saw you’ve got a steam support message from Jeremy on the first muck video
A wise man once said: "Fear of a failing is stoopid, failing is a part of life that you can learn from it" -Herbert ._.

note to self: keep expectations on Karlson low...
"its just crab game, but with story and maybe baked lights"
...does that work?
also if you want karlson, don't send death treats to the ONLY person making the game.
What are baked lights?
@@dhruvagarwal4477 Lights cooked in the oven at 180° C for 25 minutes.
Kidding, obviously. They're lights that aren't dynamic (i.e. don't move), so they're "baked" into the level textures themselves while making a game, this way your computer doesn't have to calculate exactly how the light is working while you're playing the game. Less calculation = more FPS. Baked lighting also tends to look better than simpler dynamic lighting.
I miss Dani being on the internet, I think we all miss him...
yea the amonut of people are concerned about the game and not him and then ask "where is dani?" and they really dont know he quit because of them giving him back lash
Dani, you can take all the time u want to finish karlson. I think you are doing great and as long as you are happy i am happy!
Or ask help from fans
Thats kind of creepy ngl

Just please focus on your own pace and I just know that when the time comes, you will nail it :DD
And drink milk, it'll help
10:58 bless you Danny
Thing about motivation is like reading when you were a kid, do it on your own you enjoy it and you feel productive, you get told to do it once, then you throw the book in rage and burn it to hell
