I'm 80 and I've written my a*** off, publishing six excellent nonfiction books in the last seven years (and quite a few others before). A coupla things: (1) Read trash, you can learn a tremendous amount about what good writing sounds like from reading Robert B. Parker, Michael Connelly, Robert Crais, and many others. (2) Write stuff down. I wrote a book on sports and fitness training. I would come home exhausted from a six- or seven-hour training outing and scribble my blood-red thoughts, then expand and organize them later. Aha, a book chapter. An article. A post. "The best memory is not half so firm as faded ink." - Chinese saying. (3) Write crap. NOBODY IS WATCHING, and if they find it after you die, YOU WON'T CARE. (4) Write about stuff you give a damn about. Go for long walks and find the deepest innermost core of your heart.
i think of it as we're already going to fail no matter what we do. so we could try some crappy job and fail at it or we can persue our dreams. even if we still fail at it we're failing at something we enjoy vs failing from something you already weren't interested in. and if you honestly assess why something failed it gives you direction to make next attempt more likely to succeed

Maybe it is time that I face my fear and at least try directing a few shorts.

Great pep talk, Darius. Thank you. I have only made one film, so far. I have written two scripts, the first of which was produced and directed by someone else. That was a mistake. For the second script, I did all the work myself. I wasn't afraid. I was pissed off because the first was ruined by a so called professional. After seeing it, I realized I could do just as well on my own. The anger overruled the fear. It is a great motivator.
Since I was graduated in 2015, I have been working catering and retail jobs to pay my bills. I tried to do well interviews in the post production industry but no luck. Today, I lost my training job in the NHS due to bs complaints by staffs. Yes it is fear and lack of confidence. I have felt so much unhappiness and no change of environment not doing the career I was meant to do. Tomorrow, I have to start again. Thanks D4Darious.
My Girlfriend broke up with me today, because I was too afraid of too many things in my life. Thanks for video it shows that I’am not the only one with these Problems and motivated me to work against my fears
Thanks for making this. Your stuff is so well made. On a side note, for those afraid of failure, I actually did end up homeless for a while as an actor in LA, but it was because of a leaving an abusive relationship and losing my day job in one fell swoop. The worst thing that could happen happened and I'm still here, in fact in a better situation than I've even been in. If you fail, you can bounce back even stronger, having learned from your mistakes and become more resilient towards failure. Now, after spending a few years building a career in tech, I'm back to creating again (started by getting into streaming, now I'm back to acting, writing, costuming, filming, editing), perhaps one day making it my main thing again.
Absolutely! It goes even much deeper. Think about it: why don't politicians fear making a mistake that would negatively impact people's lives, but artists who want to create beauty feel so much fear baring their souls to the world. In an ideal world, it should be the opposite, but the 'algorithm' of this world is wired differently ...

I just honestly was really heavy into thinking about this lately. Thank you for your words and your wisdom. I just took my first step toward one of my goals and goodness is it crazy to think about constantly and I appreciate the push you gave me.
I really needed this, thank you! ADHD, creativity, anxiety and imposter syndrome are constantly at odds but I'm glad you're giving us a path to manage that.

I’m stress and drunk right now but this is like a Angel telling me just fucking shot, edit and repeat. Thanks man! I needed this.
Thanks for this! Your earlier videos advised me to start small. That helped me when I got approached to work on my first mini-documentary. Prior to that, I started doing short video profiles and building my way up to the mini-doc. Because I built those skills and started with, as you say, "small peaks," I was ready for that moment. When fear popped up, I was able to "look at the project from another angle" and get it done.
I literally went to Facebook to do my mind and play a video to pass the time… I’ve been feeling uninspired, and totally unable to create. A lot of the things you said in the video I relate to and understand. I’ve told myself some of these things before, but the way you broke it down and the video really helped. I’m starting right now with cleaning my room and creating my workstation. Tomorrow I’m going to start work… Little steps one by one Thank you
I've been one of the lucky ones to be starting my dream career at a young age. The time when being filled with naivety and overly optimism, people would strike me with all sorts of "Do you really think that's possible" but the simple answer of just keep doing it has now gotten me to a place where i currently sit with a song on Spotify with 1 million plays, thank you for bringing on with this topic!
I started recently to watch your videos and you gave me the energy and inspiration to just take my camera and make something, and today I finished editing my micro short, Thank you man, great job

Then one day, I quit Engineering, start writing a story, realize I need to learn and get better. And boom, 4 years ago, I found this channel. Through your videos I decide on a camera, get an idea about filmmaking, learn how to shoot alone, learn how to study films. And now, as I’ve just finished shooting my second feature film and having trouble starting the editing process, I come across this video. Remembering that fear also existed 4 years ago. this is inspiring. For years I've wanted to spend time in nature, find the coolest spots and share that scenery with everyone else. I've put it off because cameras being expensive, not knowing camera knowledge, time restraints and I guess just the fear of not knowing what to exactly do. No more. I bought a semi-expensive camera (on the good ol credit card), i'm learning how to use it (without overwhelming myself) and I plan to simply go on a long scenic hike and record what I can find. Hopefully this is the beginning of something and at least i'll be doing what I love. thanks for this video
I've always had a fear of failure. I think it was initially caused by kids at school being relentless, making fun of me for things I worked hard to create. Over time, it deteriorated my passion for creating things. A year and a half ago, I finally decided to take acting lessons, and it was WAY out of my comfort zone, but after the fourth lesson, I thought it was fun! In the present day, I really want to write screenplays/scripts, but I am afraid that if I don't do it right or if I make mistakes, nobody will take me seriously. I just have to remember that practice is key and that failure is one of the best ways to learn how to become better at what I want to do. Sometimes it's easier said than done, but it's important to remember!
This is EXACTLY what I needed to hear right now. Im starting a channel and it’s going to follow my journey into becoming a full time freelancer. Sharing my experiences, lessons and showing the raw progression of me just figuring it out. I feel as though im headed into the unknown unprepared. But I got faith I’ll just learn it along the way. Ive been wanting to do this since I wS 13. 9 years later. TH-cam video community has taught me everything I know from becoming a film maker to becoming a video business. And I would love to offer that back to inspire people the way I got inspired. Knock on wood. Following your progression has been been amazing and it has inspired me to take the leap. Much Respect
This year I have not been podcasting after doing it for 2 years because of the fear of failing at it. I even interviewed someone with that exact fear, which is how I found out I had it. This video really helped to remind I just to go out there and get guests, and go through that fear. Same with TH-cam videos (not the channel I am commenting on) I started making less videos because I am afraid its not going to do well, I am afraid it won't be informative enough, and so in return I just stop trying in order to avoid that fear. Thanks a ton for sharing this video, I really needed to see it today.
Thank you Darious, I never really make comments on videos because I never would have much of anything interesting to say and I have extreme trauma with being ignored (among many other things) by parents and bullies throughout childhood but as of recently I have come to understand myself, my parents, and the world around me. I have made great change but you and your channel are among some of the only things that have kept me sane thru the years and I want to thank you even if you don't see this comment :) Fear does indeed kill art and I would also want you to know besides my therapist and friends and whatnot that you have made such an impact on my art and myself never quit d4 you are legit one of the most inspiring humans alive to me thank you for everything you put out into the world
This is so spot on. Great message. Has endless applications, but I instantly thought of public speaking. The only way to quiet the fear is to do it and keep doing it. The anxiety never completely goes away but it gets so much easier. Thanks for the video.
Concise and punchy while being almost obscenely inspirational. This will get some people to take steps today and it’s a brilliantly fun and artistic short in it’s own right. Good stuff.
You have no idea how much this video helps me right now. I've been dealing with this for a while. I've got a lot of ideas but never start them because I'm afraid to "waste" them or something since I know I'm an ant in the world of film and documentary making. It's time to actually make things, make people hate it, make mistakes and get good. Thank you man!
I'm glad Darious made this video.....it comes at a point in my life where I'm starting new adventures at the tender age of 🥁.....59😪 I have a business in the wings, a tv pilot I finished. Bro I followed you back in 2013 when I got out of the military. Great content. Then I fell off because of bills and the fear going homeless. I have a great job and can buy all the gear but that fear is real. I’ll start this time and not stop. I listen to everything you made. That fear killed me! Not this time.
All of your videos are just so high quality. The simplicity, animations, smoothness, camera/audio quality and colour are all mixed together, while having perfection help to make absolutely outstanding videos. Amazing work!
Great video. Love the animations! Reminds me of advice from Ray Bradbury: “The best hygiene for beginning writers or intermediate writers is to write a hell of a lot of short stories. If you can write one short story a week-it doesn’t matter what the quality is to start, but at least you’re practicing, and at the end of the year you have 52 short stories, and I defy you to write 52 bad ones. Can’t be done. At the end of 30 weeks or 40 weeks or at the end of the year, all of a sudden a story will come that’s just wonderful.”
Great video! We've all been there (or are there) at various points. Taking that first big step in getting started is often the "small" thing that's much bigger than we realize.
This one hit right in the nail for those starting to create brah brah! You are helping out many creators out there. Thanks for sharing your passion for filmmaking.
I love your content Darius! Great to see you back posting again :-) This topic happens to be near and dear to my heart right now as I'm working through a whole bunch of new skills that scare the hell out of me. Thanks for talking about it. It ain't easy but it is simple!

I bought a semi-expensive camera (on the good ol credit card), i'm learning how to use it (without overwhelming myself) and I plan to simply go on a long scenic hike and record what I can find. Hopefully this is the beginning of something and at least i'll be doing what I love. thanks for this video
You're the GOAT of visual story telling Bruh Bruh. Keep'em rolling out if health and time obligations permit it!!!!!
Thanks man. I needed that. And damn, you made the bitter medicine go down smoothly with those sick motion graphics
Love this. JUST START! :)
Thank you Big Kev🤜🤛
Hit the nail on the head there. Much appreciated.
Darious, you are awesome! Thanks for everything!
Really needed to hear dis bruh... Thanks for putting this out in the world
This year I have not been podcasting after doing it for 2 years because of the fear of failing at it.
I literally jumped seeing the notif for this new video, within 38 seconds
Thank you Darious, I never really make comments on videos because I never would have much of anything interesting to say and I have extreme trauma with being ignored (among many other things) by parents and bullies throughout childhood but as of recently I have come to understand myself, my parents, and the world around me. I have made great change but you and your channel are among some of the only things that have kept me sane thru the years and I want to thank you even if you don't see this comment :) Fear does indeed kill art and I would also want you to know besides my therapist and friends and whatnot that you have made such an impact on my art and myself never quit d4 you are legit one of the most inspiring humans alive to me thank you for everything you put out into the world
Thank you for sharing your thoughts comment Expo!
Not what I expected this video to be, but so good dude!
This is so spot on. Great message. Has endless applications, but I instantly thought of public speaking. The only way to quiet the fear is to do it and keep doing it. The anxiety never completely goes away but it gets so much easier. Thanks for the video.
Well done. Engaging from the first frame to the last.
D stepped back and upped everything! Thanks for the message!
Thank you, brother, for that message. Encouraging and inspiring. Let's go!
Thank you for the no bullshit approach to conquering fear.
Welcome back!! Amazing video. Really inspiring. Hope you’re well, you look well 🙂
Holy crap this is extremely relevant. And I've known this for a while but sometimes you gotta be called out explicitly. JUST DO IT.
Your absence from Social Media allowed you to enhance your storytelling skills and animation. EXCELLENT !!!
Concise and punchy while being almost obscenely inspirational. This will get some people to take steps today and it’s a brilliantly fun and artistic short in it’s own right. Good stuff.
Always a pleasure, a new vid from D4Darius.
I love you man. I can't express how encouraging your videos are.
Videos like this really make a difference to people. Thank you.
Bro bro this is some profound stuff! Thanks for this
I'm glad Darious made this video.....it comes at a point in my life where I'm starting new adventures at the tender age of 🥁.....59😪 I have a business in the wings, a tv pilot I finished. I'm going to take a leap of faith. How many times do I have to hear this same speech, even from my Pastor. I got this. We got this!!!🙏🏾🤗💕
Thank you. I have a great fear of trying something new. This is exactly what I needed. New website coming next week. TY for your continued work.
Bro I followed you back in 2013 when I got out of the military. Great content. Then I fell off because of bills and the fear going homeless. I have a great job and can buy all the gear but that fear is real. I’ll start this time and not stop. I listen to everything you made. That fear killed me! Not this time.
This video is an actual masterpiece. TH-cam recommendations has been blessing me good lately.
The production value of this channel is... WOW!
All of your videos are just so high quality. The simplicity, animations, smoothness, camera/audio quality and colour are all mixed together, while having perfection help to make absolutely outstanding videos. Amazing work!
Thank you, Thank you. Adding to my playlist because i will definitely need to hear this repeatedly.
Loved the animation style!
Amen! Love the style. Love the content. Love the delivery ❤️ See you soon, brother!
Yo yo Piotr. Thank you Brutha.
Damn, I needed this so bad. Thank you bro, i really really appreciate it
Dude you really helped me just now with this video. I can’t tell you how important this video is
synchronicity - right place, right time, needed this!
Buddy, The Way put your video right in front of me today and I really needed it. At a bit of crossroads and your video help a lot. Once my podcast starts up next month I’d love to have you on.
