As my friend would often say, Jack Tramiel would "pinch a quarter so hard that the eagle on it would start screaming"! Jack's approach worked early on but he was mostly dealing with engineers who ( sadly ) did not understand the value of their own works. Executives, on the other hand, overvalue their importance so Jack's cut-throat demands would make them cry rivers over the pittance they perceived to be getting. Knowing that Sega would never accept his terms, Jack was probably trying to figure out a way to gather info about Sega's plans so he could later undermine them. Sega was much more nimble than most of his competitors and was able to avoid falling into his traps. I'm sure that Jack thought that the Panther\Jaguar projects would turn things around by being early with next-gen hardware since it was already too late to make a dent against Sega and Nintendo. Hardware wise, the Jaguar would have a remarkable price to performance value similar to the Atari ST computers but Jack somehow was not aware that consoles do not sell on hardware specs alone the way that personal computers often do. You can have a Commodore 64 commercial with William Shatner extolling how many amazing hardware features are available and never once mention any programs that work on it, and that commercial will work perfectly fine and sell a boat load of systems. Do the same thing for a game console and you are doomed. Players love better hardware but they won't pull the trigger unless they see games, lots of games, and games that are better than what they currently play.
Jack never understood the market. He understand business from a perspective that didn't exist in gaming. Cars? Yeah back then it was horsepower and an easy metric to sell.
Tramiel's buyout of Atari was strange because he wanted to do home computers while the world saw Atari as a video game company. At a minimum, he should have used a different brand name (Amiga?) while using Atari as a development and manufacturing resource. This would be similar to HP Omen. Or Cadillac, Lincoln, Infiniti, or Lexus.
I really appreciate your videos, you really dig deep down into the history and really do your research. Thank you for these videos and a good retrospective on each console and games you talk about.
It amazes me how much collaboration these companies where doing, sometimes I wonder what the gaming world would have been like had these deals gone through, like, what other interesting consoles could have been?
What they should have done too, was attempt to acquire Atari, that way they could have made updates of those very games for Sega, while being able to distribute the old versions of the games too.
Look, you can never be sure how things would’ve turned out. But one thing I do know: you don’t want to trust anything you love to the Tramiels. Period.
Wow I had no idea that Sega and Atari were ever in talks. It only makes sense that they were though with how dominant Nintendo was. I like that you correctly stated that the 16-bit era did have indeed the greatest console war of all time. The Sega Genesis definitely left its Mark and sold really well although the Super Nintendo did ultimately still beat them. Both systems had some great games and generally pretty solid controllers although the Super Nintendo controller was definitely better, but yeah great games and just a lot of fun
Mega Drive/Genesis six button controller is my personal fave. It's still my personal fave controller ever all these years later. I do think the SNES controller is better than the standard three button Mega Drive controller, though.
A wood grain MD/Genesis would be a sin against God. I've always hated the wood grain look on the 2600. They make me think the 2600 should smell like when you visit the house of your great aunt who smokes all the time.
I was there during the biggest gaming feud of the century and it was almost like civil war with friends and siblings arguing over which was better, Sega, or Nintendo - just like sports teams being favored over the other. I was a Nintendo fan then and to this day and proud of it. I was the original Captain Nintendo winning the first gaming contest of Nintendo in the late 80's when I was just a kid. Without Nintendo there would be no Legend of Zelda, no Castlevania, not even Super Mario! Nintendoes what Sega could not! ;)
I have a hot take: I never liked anything on Atari 2600 except Mario Bros. My dad had one when I was little but I would've rather played with Ninja Turtles than play with squares that make annoying boot sounds 🐢
Ok..... I'll give this video a shot. But if that "woodgrain" Genesis in the thumbnail doesn't actually exist and happens to be fake lying misleading clickbait like her husband does I'm gone. Let's see.
Yep. Dishonest. How can you take youtubers who use clickbait photos seriously? Same reason I unsubbed from Top Hat Gaming. If they don't respect you, you can't respect them. Sorry, fellas. Do better.
"Everything coming up Milhouse" got an audible laugh out of me

Atari Genesis: a necessity for gracious living.
Excellent timing with that Vince McMahon clip!
I went from an Atari 2600 to a Sega Genesis in the late 80's. Theyre still my 2 favorite consoles 👍
I'm a SEGA kid, I love SEGA, this could happen only in a alternate universe. But I am interested. Thanks for sharing 👍

Honestly the hard work I would have never known about the wars of the councils and I live in the west.. Thank you for your hard work
I can’t imagine sonic being less detailed if Atari distributed the game

Epic history of the great sega genesis
That was Stephen Dorff in the Sega Master System commercial.
Considering the mess Tramiel made of Atari's console division, I'm glad he didn't get the chance to screw up the Genesis as well.
Another Great video. very interesting. You must do alot of research. I'll be waiting for your next video. God Bless and take care.
I think I love this women. I can listen to her talking about video games forever. 😊
Good times were had in the 1980s....good times....
It amazes me how much collaboration these companies where doing, sometimes I wonder what the gaming world would have been like had these deals gone through, like, what other interesting consoles could have been?
Thanks! As always, excellent content not found anywhere else!
Always interesting and informative K.
Keep up the good work lass and, as always, stay safe!
Timeless.

So two times Atari had a chance to turn their selves around but blew it
This is awesome
I already heard about the backstory about Atari & Nintendo 😌
Unlike the story about Atari & Sega... 😶
Genesis was having flimsy design . All Atari had excellent design build like a tank. I wonder how Genesis will look redesigned by Atari
Look, you can never be sure how things would’ve turned out. But one thing I do know: you don’t want to trust anything you love to the Tramiels. Period.
Wow. She’s great 😊
Blimey what's Note Gallagher doing in your video at 2.23?
RIP potential necessity for gracious living 🙏

I thought David Rosen founded the whole of Sega, not just its North America division.

Atari shot themselves in the foot almost as many times as the packers did in their playoff game against Detroit tonight.
Does she not answer questions any more at the end of videos?

So what if Apple bought Nintendo in the 90s? Would the iPod look different? You should cover that.
And what if Microsoft bought Sony in the 90's?
I just unnotified everything then renotified. TH-cam wasn't telling me you was uploading.

@@dongeraci8599 It's obviously a mockup of what could have been. I'll bet you somebody somewhere has crafted a custom woodgrain console though.
I don't think those were "fake thumbnails" per-se; but rather, "mock-ups". Part of it could be in line with British Humour!
Lol lies
