  • It's back to June 1991 now and to Kensington Olympia, back when it had semaphore signalling and a signal box. Plenty of variety on this upload with Cross-Country workings hauled by class 47/8's while Trainload Freight workings are hauled by class 56, 59 & 60. A calss 47 light engine move plus classes 33 & a pair of 73 on engineers trains complete the picture. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

    This is the Kensington Olympia as I remember it best as I started taking photos of trains there from 1992 onwards and it was just a wonderful place with semaphore signalling along with the former Kensington South Main signal box and the class 47s on the InterCity service from Dover Western Docks to Manchester Piccadilly or the Sussex Scot service from Brighton to Glasgow Central. The D stock on the District Line brings back memories as on weekdays it was always a train of C69/C77 stock on the Olympia shuttle but on weekends it was usually a D78 stock. The buses passing along Hammersmith Road bring back memories with London United Metrobuses on route 27 and the Reading Transport Olympians on the former 'Goldline' X1 service alongside Routemasters on the crew-operated 9 and 10 routes. Only in 1993 was when the line was electrified with the third rail and colour-light signalling before the southbound platform was built in 1994. From 1994 it seemed weird seeing class 373 Eurostar EMUs passing Kensington Olympia on their way to and from the former North Pole Eurostar depot and in 1995 and 1996 it seemed even more weird seeing HSTs passing through Kensington Olympia on the short-lived express services from London Waterloo up to the likes of Manchester Piccadilly or Edinburgh Waverley. Thanks for this great memory!

      @@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus There's no freight traffic at all I'm afraid from the Island now, Sheerness Steelworks shut a long time along with the smaller industries that were rail served. There's more than enough businesses out there that could be rail served but its all on the road now.

    I remember being absolutely delighted when I discovered this train as I needed to get from Birmingham to Brighton and it meant I could go direct. We pulled into Olympia and where, after a long wait, we got shunted over to the other side as the replacement crew hadn't turned up! After another half hour or so we got shunted back to be told that the train was cancelled and my one train trip became, including tubes, five! I didn't rush to take that train again! 😬

    Used to drive the Brighton Manchester and Brighton Glasgow trains when I was a trainman at Brighton. ( whenever the opportunity arose obviously. ). Loved the W LER from Clapham to North Pole Jnc or Acton Wells via southwest sidings round the back of of old oak. Real London history, from the apartments by the river, where Michael Caine had a place( allegedly) to the rubbish strewn area under the westway , north of kenny where steptoe was filmed. Magic. And a subsidised meal in the P.O. canteen at Reading waiting for our back working. Genuinely happy days

I worked the South West Sidings pilot loco job, shunt stock about between South West Sidings, F sidings and Brent Yard to make up trains for the Euston blockade in around 1999/2000 time.....happy days indeed!

    Great Video - Kenny O has got to be one of my fav places on the network, although the freight traffic is now far reduced. It's great to see the signal box and I'm guessing the unused (?) platform prior to the development on that side. The station does appear in an episode of The Sweeney when some bad guys use it to avoid being followed by Regan and Carter.

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, at this time only the main platform was used although it was possible to get over the other side to film the trains. The sweeney episode you are thinking of was Selected Target.

      The platform on which Soi is standing was widened over the track in front of it. The episode of The Sweeney being referred to is in Series 3 which is about to be rerun on ITV4 at some point this week coming.

      GWR trains sometimes ran there. In fact, at one time, I think it was a Western Region station, before being transferred to the London Midland Region.

    • @robertbate5790
      @robertbate5790 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe Kensington was a joint line between the GWR and LSWR/SR. There was at one time an intensive freight interchange service between the companies. I'm not certain, but I think there was also a diversionary passenger agreement. This meant that train crews had occasional trips on each others lines to keep their route knowledge up to date. Similar arrangements existed elsewhere including Exeter, Weymouth, Yeovil ect.

    Certainly had a tidy up since this was taken.
    Seems very underused by today's standard although freight has dwindled by comparison as has the District line services.

    *NOW LET'S BE SERIOUS*
    It shows how much of an underused but valuable asset the west London line was compared to the heavy use made of it today
    For example, getting up north is much easier with regular southern trains providing a regular service allowing a change of train at Watford junction to a stream of northbound intercity services as opposed to 1-2 intercity trains per day in 1991 and Kensington Olympia is much better connected with access possible from many more parts of London and if no direct train is available one merely changes at shepherds bush or west brompton to reach Olympia quickly
