  • Many early EMUs: 2-BIL, 2-HAL, 4-BUF, 4-COR, 5-BEL, 6-PUL.
Mostly filmed around Redhill, Merstham, Earlswood, East Croydon, Clapham Junction and Waterloo with some late steam around Salisbury.
This is the hi-res version with corrected captions.

A superb piece of Archive and pleased that film of the unsung 4Lav units is shown they were never really in the limelight on the Brighton Line of course as they mainly did the stopping services I believe and I do have a couple of slides of them . Well done!

Rare & excellent footage. Thanks for uploading. My experience of the Southern in the 50's & 60's was on the Hastings line where first the Schools class & later the Thumpers took us on our annual hols.......It used to break my heart returning home from Hastings knowing I had to go back to school.

Thanks for the memories. I spent many happy hours spotting at Clapham Junction when a pupil at Emanuel School just up the road in Battersea Rise. Had a cab ride up and down the Kenny Belle platform on 82029. Happy boy!

Lovely Classic iconic footage of British Rail from the 1960s .
Great Video ❤️Long before I were born in July of 1973 time .
Would love to be transported back to these times long before Privatisation that accured in 1993 time to Today's generation of Locomotion and Rails that are a complete mess now.
Love this Archival footage with Steam power still operating on the Main line, Beautiful Locomotion albeit Steam or Diesel power ❤️❤️❤️

I worked on the Southern at Southern House and Battersea Park during this Period travelling from Norbury and later Lewes, and remember the Newhaven Boat Train often had a big green Peak Class Diesel Locomotive on it. How I miss those lovely old EMUs, and how little I appreciated them, I suppose I thought they‘d be around forever, the green Livery always looked more the part than that drab corporate BR Livery of the 70‘s. Thank you brought back fond Memories.

Peter J Hillier You are fortunate to have seen a Peak on the Southern as I don’t ever recall seeing one.
I was born ‘64 and by the time I was old enough to notice most of the “good stuff” had already gone. Happy days

@@johnoxlade I believe that the peaks used to cover the Newhaven Harbour to Stirling motorail working.

Like the details. The arrow of indecision on the tanks cab sheet at Waterloo. Cheeky cleaner

Splendid film, thank you. 1 min, 40 secs into the film we see 2 BIL sets leaving Redhill, to the back in the Post Office bay platform it looks like a BTH Class 15 at the head of some vans. Can anyone shed any light on this working as no 15's where allocated to the S Region? Was the van train destined for Eastern Region? Any information would be nice.

Has that hymek driver dropped a bollock at 2.55. Looks like all the signals at the end of the platform are on. Perhaps the trains not as fitted as he thought

@@jerryuk93 thanks for that, you’re quite right. I never saw redhill with semaphore. All colour lights on gantry there when I was going through it. Next signal protects junction at earslswood and isn’t far, just by Loco and the coal stage. So he has plenty of room

      1. No need to be a douche about it.
      2. Actually, it was British Rail from 1965.
