Eilean Donan Castle, Scotland - Ancestral home of the Clan MacRae, Eilean Donan Castle sits on the sea-loch at Dornie, at the point where three Scottish lochs meet. The massive walls and vast fireplace are familiar features of Scotland's fortified buildings, though the Gothic, leaded windows owe more to Victorian romanticism.
Today the Great Hall contains fine furniture, family portraits and Jacobite memorabilia including a lock of Bonnie Prince Charlie's hair. It is Scotland's most romantic and recognizable castle, but it is not entirely what it seems. Although the name Eilean Donan (island of Donan) was established in the 6th/7th century, and the island of Eilean Donan has been a fortified site for at least eight hundred years, the present building dates largely from the early 20th century.
Today's castle, which rose from the ruins of its predecessor, was rebuilt between 1912 and 1932 by Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap. You can explore almost every part of the Castle from the banqueting hall to the bedrooms and follow in the footsteps of many a warrior, from the Vikings to the Jacobites. If it looks familiar, the opening sequences of Hollywood's Highlander were shot here.

Looking out from the castle onto the Loch and the mountains is absolutely stunning. So vast and so still. Completely unspoilt. My girlfriend took a photo of this place and we framed it.
