Sina Theil and Caitríona O’Sullivan celebrate a number 1 single in the main Irish charts and also Irish Country charts with the first female released duet of the iconic song “The Fields of Athenry” to mark International Women’s Day week and St. Patrick’s Day.
“There’s a very powerful female story within this beautiful yet heartbreaking song; the story of a mother left alone to fight for her and her young children’s survival during the Great Famine of Ireland. A fate that, sadly, is still a reality for many women around the world today.”
“The Fields of Athenry” is available on all major download and streaming sites: linktr.ee/sinatheil
Caitríona O’Sullivan is a Tralee, Co. Kerry, native and a singer-songwriter and long standing judge of the Irish hit TV music show Glór Tíre. Furthermore, she's a musical director, music and Irish language teacher, author, wedding singer and choir conductor. Please follow her here:

@@djw1421 That's a very interesting point as Alan Clarke wrote in a book pointing out the option we had of 'siding' with the Germans for the Anglo-Saxons are Germanic, and Hitler didn't want to fight us. He thought we were bungling idiots, which we are, but we did prevent the Americans from speaking Japanese (which eludes them) since had we done so, the Russians would have been rapidly quashed and the USA would have stood alone. But either way... we lost, destroyed our Empire, crippled ourselves and didn't pay off war debts until 2006.

I have since my 20s listened to Irish music on and off. Athenry fills me up and makes me cry even in my now late years. I have no idea why. My late father was from East Wall Dublin and Ive always had an interest in the Irish/English history. I served in the RN with Irish guys ( and worked for Irish firms as a machine driver when I became a civvy in the 70s) and at one time our ship went to Derry and we were out on an exercise and put into a small coastal town ( cant remember the name) on the edge of Donegal and anchored off. I was lucky to have gotten ashore in the liberty boat with about 14 others and headed for the nearest pub. A great storm blew up. A force 10 gale. They couldnt get us off so we stayed in the pub where the locals fed us and kept us in the black stuff all night. It was a massive party everyone was steaming. They had music as well and I knew a few rebel songs and these old guys kept coming over and giving me a hug. I had one hell of a hang over next day when the boat came in to get us off. Ill never forget it but I was only just 17 at the time.

Two historic events that are not taught in my country of the UK. The HIghland Clearances in Scotland and The Great Famine in Ireland. Growing up as a child of Scotland in the 1970s, where even my local language of Doric was discouraged in school; I now understand why we were taught about other 'great' events. The two world wars and the industrial revolution. It's never too late to learn the shameful events.

    • @mfjdv2020

I understand your feelings. My family emigrated from Ireland to Lancashire in UK like so many other Irish, due to an Gorta Mór. I have never even been to Ireland, or had the chance to learn the Gaelic. But there is another shameful event: Cromwell's intended genocide of the Irish people. In England they even have statues of that murdering bastard, streets are named after him, there is even a portrait of him in their parliament. In Germany they at least have the inner decency not to have a portrait of Adolf Hitler in the Bundestag, or to have any streets named 'Adolf-Hitler-Strasse'.

Most beautiful song I’ve heard in a long while. Makes me think of an old photo I have that was taken in Dublin in the late 1800’s of my grandmother and great grandmother. As a teenager my grandmother and a girlfriend of hers later came to America by themselves, brave girls. They’ve all passed long ago but all things Irish make me tear up.

Love this rendition. I'm from Australia and I've loved this song since hearing the late Denis O'Keeffe perform it with accordionist Bernadette Zabawa (nee Conlon) at the Port Fairy Folk Festival about 30years ago.

*I couldn't find a video with lyrics, but alas:*
    "By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling...
"Michael, they have taken you away...
    For you stole Trevelyan's corn,
So the young might see the morn.
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay..."
Low lie the fields of Athenry,
Where once we watched the small free birds fly...
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing...
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry...
    By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling,
'Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free...
Against the famine and the crown
I rebelled; they cut me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity.'
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly...
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing...
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry...
    By a lonely harbour wall,
She watched the last star falling,
As that prison ship sailed out against the sky...
For she lived in hope and pray,
For her love in Botany Bay...
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry...
Low lie the fields of Athenry,
Where once we watched the small free birds fly...
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing...
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry..."
