I've been watching this series from the beginning. Ironically, I had a 468 built for dirt track racing in the early 2000's. So far, our engines are identical. The goal was to make the reciprocating assembly as light as possible, so as to come off peak RPM quickly when at the end of the straightaways. My crank is lightened, and the front half is internally balanced, but the back half has a mated weight plate to the crank. This allows for a very light, zero weight harmonic balancer, as well as a neutral balance flywheel (just incase I destroy a flywheel, just bolt on a new zero balance and go).
We didn't use factory GM rods, in fact, mine is a long rod motor, with a company that made 'pink' style rods... They've lasted for 20 years so far, under the rigors of dirt track racing.
I'm learning so much, that my engine builder spoke about, but didn't really elaborate like you do. Thanks for this series.
SMART and great attention to detail, not just a quickie rebuild, end results will be worth it when it hits the dyno. The GM 572 has the same power with many more cubes.

If this is the detailed level he goes to on his budget build, I can only imagine what he does on a high budget build.

Weak point BBC is rod bolts. SPS rod bolts used before ARP was around great job!!! Super and always got no rod bolts failure.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I allay thuoght the rist pin end needed to keep the square block on them for strength, , kool I’m learning, I’m going to be rebuilding one of my 454 truck motors, at some point, this is all good points to of reference , thanks BigAl California.
Just remember Buick rods take the weight of the bosses close to the big end!!!
Any reason to not use lighter rods with bolt only? Looks like a good way to shed weight, All the fancy rods are threaded upper. And shorter rod bolt.

Mark, I assume you source the virgin rods from GM and they the most recent gen VI version?
How did you setup your weighing station? Wouldnt the hanging height of the wrist pin affect the weight, and influence your bob weight? Thank you for the videos.
That's not important what's important is that all the rods are the same

GM has two rods for the big blocks. Thumb or thumb print and dimple rods. It's my understanding that the dimple rods came in the high performance engines and the thumb rods where standard performance.

Who runs a stock rod......labor and arp bolts cost as much as a new set of Scat 4340's......buy a balanced rotating assembly and still a budjet build

@@rustyschultz1118 still wont buy anything out of China. Quality control is poor on those rods and pre balanced rotating came unbalanced most of the times. Tons of people run stock rods on 7-800hp engines.
