676lb TQ @ 9.9:1 compression?? and iron heads?? hydraulic roller?? oval port heads?? what?? I built a 496 stroker with 10.7:1 compression, 248/256@ 50 .625 lift HR cam and Brodix heads not turning TQ numbers like that. sumpin weird there.
The #'s dont lie as far as the flow is concerened, but what are you really gaining from changing an exhaust valve from a 1.72 to a 1.88? I can see some porting to help things out, but does a bigger exhaust valve really do that much?
That's got to be a Solid Roller Cam making all those ponies especially with Iron heads.
You saved me waisting my money on 496 combination with Straubs custom camshaft and Afr 265 heads.
Close enough to say 700hp engine Id say! The fact it ran great for 10 yrs is saying something! Most that own old cars will never drive 10k mi in thier lifetime. AMazing... Mark are you in Texas these days?
Ive built many 327s in the last 45 yrs. They perform better with less than any of the sbChevy's.
How much power can be made with afr 265 and 290 heads without porting?
I want one.
What’s the purpose/benefit of cutting the counterweights down on a 454 steel crane
My buddie and me just finished 327 tunnel ram motor ,Hoping for 600 hp. Track 1s, 221 int. Port, big comp. Cam ,12 to 1 pistons H beam rods forged steel Std. Std. Crank, king race bearings 2 heavily modified 600s. MSD ignition with lockout. It seams to like a lot of advance, running 112 octane. Has excellent responce with modified carbs. I grew up when these engines were King at the drag strip.
I love that its a simple set up in a factory stock body car with a roll bar its not tubed or narrowed something the average guy can build and go out and run mid 10s consistently without alot of maintenance and braking every other week great job.
Well said! Too many believe you have to use forced induction to get 10s . This engine can be driven anywhere. Good ol basic BBC torque
I noticed the blocks you have are 2bolt blocks how much HP can you make reliable for 2 bolt block!!!
Lol. that dyno will give you a + 100 hp .even on golfcar 😃
Front end suspension compression and rebound is WAY OFF. Get that dialed in and stop that bouncing baby routine, guarantee your lap times improve.
I wouldn’t touch those cheapo heads.
weak
Says you. Lets see yours...were waiting
I have a chance to buy a 10068286 block. Is this a good block to build a 500 hp 454? Is the cam tunnel good in these blocks. ? Cylinder wall thickness good? Thanks
Mark just built me a 467 with that block . It made 600hp at 6200rpm and 602 torque at 4200 rpm’s . He likes those blocks by the way .
weighing tang up or tang down makes literally 0 difference.
I have 1967 427 049 heads 98 cc the 74 454 781 have 118 cc
Nice Mark!
When all in the world is right
What is your take on a gear drive timing set?
Did you state if it was a small or large journal crank?
Nice work fellas 👏
What a beast, it sounds perfect
Similar to my build
Back in 1998 I built a 12.5 ls7 454 short block and installed merlin 269 iron oval ports, everyone laughed at me when I removed the iron rec ports. 12.5 compression Merlin iron oval ports I ported. Ultradyne solid roller. 263 271 660 680 108 lobe sep installed at 103 Dart oval port 1050 Dom. On a stuska dyno it did 726 hp and 640 torque. Hp peak was 6800. Car went from 10.60 at 128 to 10 flat and 136. The good old days, I ran that engine for ten years on street and track.
Very impressive
Typical Chevy breaking down having problems and beat by a little small block red mustang LOL
WHere do you see anything breaking down the rest of us didnt.
On race engines I don't use exhaust seals no cut
I'm late to the party But I'm getting sick and tired of people discouraging others from wanting to use older steel heads. It makes me assume that they DID NOT have exposure at a young age to the older stuff. I'm about to pay $1500 on some 990 heads. The main reason is that because as a 16 year old I was blessed enough to ride in a gold class show car that had an LS7 in it(no kids..not an LS) It's about feeling some godd emotion to go along with the highs and lows of tinkering with these old.hot rods. Also, for anyone reading...PLEASE don't toss the steel heads out. Sell them to us ..or better yet...use them yourself. ..you won't regret it Thanks
More the keyboard builders post the more it is obvious they dont know jack. THis is a great street combo good torque curve can drive every day! Makes more torque than the GM 350hp cam too. Dont think anyone here is gonna teach mark anything haha
Great job on Videos always awesome. I would still like a real comparison with same valve diameter to have a real life gain on porting without changing the valve side or even and or, change valve with no porting and flow to see the gain. These are just suggestions I would like to start porting heads I watch videos but I think I would start with someone with experience by my side! Thanks again and keep doing your great job!
You need to be at a level of machinist understanding for this ! Great Job .
Exactly what I’m looking for in my dually!!!
Love it!!!!
I just picked up a clean set of 292’s for $200. They have good guides no rust pitting and passed the magnaflux inspection. They still have stock valves and don’t appear to have had any work done to them. Are these heads good candidates for a performance build?
Pretty amazing power and broad torque with a smallish cam and iron heads. I really didn’t think it would pull that high with only 315 cfm available at peak cam lift Very nice work I build a lot of strokers myself!
Thanks so much Mark! That is big power for a 467 and that small of cam...Wow!
just found you, subscribed
Doing fixes seem to be the standard thing with pro comp stuff consistency in the casting and machining is always nowhere defiantly better to pay for the US made heads if you don't wanna mess around for average results.
Curious why you only changed the cast guide on the intake and not the exhaust too? Usually the exhaust has more wear than the intake does.
Surprised that head with the core shift made it through Quality Control?
Are the exhaust seats hardened when you’re done?
This is a quarter mile, right ?
We're are you located and what's the cost to do a set of 781 heads.Nice work
How good are the 950bbc heads, trying to find Information but not successful, would love to know ,cc,chambers, and flow rates,ty rates
Do you still do iron bbc heads
Did he ever actually say what the compression ratio was on this engine
I picked up a set of 1971 820's about a year ago for 100 bucks. Had them checked, everything renewed for another 150, I have no extreme build, but about 450 Hp with about 425 -450 ft pounds of trq.
What was corrected altitude?
