So the pet peeve about that guy who spends ages in confession... I've been that guy. After 15 years having not been to confession, and having not been to mass, but knowing that I needed to go to confession before going tpo mass... yeah I was that guy. I got there early and there was no one else waiting. When I walked out there were like 10 people glaring at me. I learned that lesson, but I also hope those people who glared confessed that next time. I'd just returned to the church! They should be rejoicing!

Thanks for reading my comment on the live stream, Matt! I asked specifically about Steubenville because I would really like to attend Franciscan. Luckily I'm not in debt now, only fearful of the debt that higher education in something I am becoming passionate about, like Catechesis, would incur, especially if I wind up discerning priesthood. Advice and prayers from commenters is absolutely welcome.

Pursue first the way that God is calling you to glorify Him with the gifts you’ve been given. Seek the kingdom and it will be provided! It’s hard not to let these fears paralyze you.
The Lord can handle money issues so easily vs. issues relating to your interior willingness to follow His will.
(I went to college and have upwards of 20,000 in student debt - I’m about to to in a 3 month live in with Benedictine nuns! I have no doubt that He will take care of it if I’m called to enter this order :)
Also, there are a bunch of different resources for paying off debt for religious vocations!

Matt, just wanted to let you know your channel was the gateway of my conversion to Catholicism. I was a Protestant who spent a lot of time watching Christian apologetics on TH-cam and my first encounter with Catholic thinking was your debate with Cameron bertruzzi on sola scriptura. From then on, my conversion to Catholicism took place solely through Catholic TH-cam channels, primarily yours. I didn’t know a single Catholic person in real life until I eventually started going to RCIA. God used TH-cam to make me Catholic. Never underestimate the power of your reach on internet to change people. You changed me, thank you. God bless

On the point of reading good books and having good converdstions: 1. I get it, yes it is better than youtube generally. 2. Some of us live in places that has almost no cathloics. I have only ever met two, one of whom converted to protestantism. I am not s catholic myself but your work on here has certainly help me walk to the edge of conversion.

On the pet peeve issue: as a choir member i understand if people don't feel comfortable singing the hymns (we love to have you all belt them out with us!), but what really gets me is the congregation not singing the Mass parts. Ok if you're visiting and don't know them, but regular parishioners, come on! It's an actual part of the liturgy!

When they talked about how they understood how men can leave their families, it really hit home for me. My dad left our family last year, and while I’m an adult, it absolutely shattered me. But hearing these men talk so candidly about their marriages and experiences and hearts helped me to not hate my own father as much. What he has done is evil, but I don’t hate him for it. From a young woman, thank you both so much for your openness to the Lord to make this podcast.

Matt, you're right, I got completely annoyed by first 25 minutes of you two complaining :) I don't know what was the purpose of this segment, maybe you just wanted to vent a bit, but in my opinion there is more negative fruit than positive one. Having watched a lot of your videos, I strongly believe you have a lot of charity and empathy, but in this video here I don't experience them (even though you both talk about these virtues and say many good things later - it seems very theoretical after boasting about the annoyances, looking down on others). As I said, this is not how I perceive you in general, this is my impression with a long beginning of this video. I hope it won't push back newcomers or "returners".
In one of previous videos you shared a short story of an old woman, who kissed the floor several times after the Holy Communion got dropped. That was beautiful. Also the talk you did with Jacob Imam about what touches you in old latin mass (rather than ranting about pope and cardinals) - I talked with my cousin-priest, how touching and beautiful this video was. I think the examples of goodness and beauty (shout out to Dostoevsky!) are much more worth the time than sharing annoyances. (you acknowledge that at the beginning of the 3rd hour of this conversation)
I feel that many of your uplifting interlocutors (ie. fr. Mark-Mary, fr. Angelus, fr. Boniface, sr. Miriam, bishop Joseph, Peter Kreeft) try to quench complains or find some little good bit out of it instead of joining the "train". And it fits with attitudes of many saints. I know I myself often go too much into empty complaining and criticizing others without charity, so I know it's difficult to balance everything, and I appreciate even more people who can speak about the Truth with love - like it is said in 1 Thessalonians 5:19 - without "quenching the Spirit".
Regarding phones, I have a dumb phone and I wouldn't say that other people react positively. I guess they either think I'm a bit late with the world (and they don't care) or they treat it as an inconvenience for THEM (because they'd rather text me through messenger/facebook/whatsapp than send an e-mail or SMS). And I think we're already in times, where not having a smartphone is a social exclusion. In Europe many services require authorization through an app (even though they could have used e-mail and phone number). Many groups or activities are connected through whatsapp only (not even mentioning facebook-only groups). Some work or charity events are coordinated through more sophisticated apps - there is a point in that, the logistics go smoother, but you won't be able to participate when you don't have a phone. I experience this exclusion often, it comes with the choice of a dumb phone.
    God bless you!

If I’m being honest I would have to agree. I think the thing that is coming across strongly lately is that Matt has grown weary of a lot that pertains to this kind of work and maybe it’s bleeding into other facets of faith life. A number of his videos have involved wanting to leave the internet, have other people run his social media accounts so he isn’t as affected by the negative discourse, etc. He’s expressed being peeved by excessive Catholic publications, among other things. ALL of this is completely understandable. Unfortunately his work in ministry is completely based on connecting with his audience and publishing his own writings so this has come across lately as if (forgive me) that he would prefer that his audience watch the videos and buy the books and become a patron but he’d prefer not to engage with us in these ways because he dislikes it. I do empathize with understanding that the internet is a profoundly negative environment and that it’s ideal to disconnect but there’s just a bit of discord in the message of: I’m removing myself from the internet and getting a dumb phone because it’s best for my mental health but please subscribe/become a patron/check out my book. I pray that this doesn’t come across as uncharitable because PWA was instrumental to my conversion and I have been supporting the Fradds for a long time and do want the absolute best for Matt and his family.
Fwiw, I struggle with this in my own profession of nursing, which I chose specifically for the sake of learning to participate in works of mercy. It’s difficult to want to stay connected, to show up everyday for the abuse. I definitely don’t always want to speak to others and give of myself. Just wanted to add this, because I sympathize with the feeling…

I'd like to radically change my technology habits after listening to this great discussion on smartphones... our society's on the wrong track and needs to reverse, it IS possible! Reminds me of tobacco - late 1950s 4/5 adults in UK smoked, it was unsocial not to... we know the myriad harms of smartphones and social media but we're in denial, using each other as excuses for not setting it right.

I read Father Calloway’s devotion to St Joseph. I can definitely understand the criticisms presented in this discussion, but Father Calloway did a wonderful job. He has a strong devotion to Jesus and Mary and in no way wants to distract anyone from our Lord and Blessed Mother. I enjoyed the devotion and do think it’s worth it. We could use more men like him; wholly committed to serving Christ and wholly devoted to our Blessed Mother.

Such a thoughtful and inspiring conversation.. up to about the 1 hour mark. Is comparing families who are generously and heroically open to Divine Providence, to people who would let their children play on train tracks (and thus, a new God-created soul to being hit by a train) really the standard of this show?! Sure, there are legitimate reasons for NFP and certainly it can be a cross which perhaps is not recognised, but the uncharitable attitude towards large families so ingrained in our culture and increasingly common in the Church today seems to me a far bigger problem.

Just to correct the facts about Paris and France - home country and hometown for me :
    - It's more like 10 seminarians every year (not "like one every 5 years" as Sam said). Is it enough ? No. Is it a lot less than before ? Yes.
    - The FSSP Chartres pilgrimage which I have done multiple times myself : yes there is a great strong devout youth, but also there are many people in those ranks who dismiss the current pope, put the second Vatican council and the new mass under question, and scorn "novus ordo" catholics. Granted, there are many more of those at the counter-pilgrimage FROM Chartres TO Paris organized by SSPX. But still, the youth in the ranks of the Chartres pilgrimage sometimes isn't all exemplary either, especially what regards ecclesial communion and filial obedience to the Holy Father - I was like that myself for a while as well.
And then re traditional mass Guzman says "Keep true to what you love.". This doesn't sit right with me on its own without a mention of obedience and finial submission to Christ, the Church and the Pope. Where's ecclesial communion in all this ? So yeah, I'd have liked Matt to have Sam expand on all that.

Having to maneouvre to the priest's line of communion to receive on the tongue because I can never trust that the laypeople who act as eucharistic ministers have been properly instructed. As to kneeling, I never have at a Novus Ordo, just standing and receiving on the tongue from the priest usually makes the most sense.

In ancient Greece, the word Meek was used to describe the unwaivering loyalty and unflinching behavior of a horse while its master was fighting in war. I believe meekness is misunderstood today; it is not about being gentle and pious, but rather unwavering loyal to Jesus even to the point of death (ie The Apostles, Martyrs).

Have any else gone to a novus ordo mass in a different language besides English? Last week the priest came to me after after mass with the comment that the choir was too loud and that was expected of a Latino mass. There is passion in the Spanish speaking masses I do not see in the English speaking masses.

I feel like all these “pet peeves” are more of just opportunities to grow in humility. This is what God has been showing me in my life as I’ve been praying and seeking Him more- so please don’t think I’m being judgmental. Because complaining/“venting” is a weakness of mine. When you look at these pet peeves as an opportunity to grow in humility (and maybe just pray for that person instead of judging) it can make you holier. When you just complain about it and judge people, I’d say it has the opposite effect.

Anyone else slightly annoyed at their comments about NFP. We have up using NFP 5 years ago because it was so stressful to try to track my crazy PCOS cycle. It put way more stress on me than it did my husband. One night I threw the charts away and it has helped my mental health so much to not have a constant reminder that my body doesn’t work correctly. They make it sound like if a person just trusts God and doesn’t use NFP they are dumb and selfish. I’m not dumb. I know how babies are made. We also aren’t selfish. We aren’t having sex every waking minute without knowledge of the consequences. I would rethink that bit

About the confession line pet peeve, as a former teacher of 6th-8th graders, who were starting to ask real questions about the faith, I disagree with this one. My students were forced to go twice a year in a confession assembly line where 100 kids had to go, and be done, penace prayers included in a half hour. So the kids were often forced to go to confession quickly, in an open space, in front of their peers. (There were about 5 priests dotted around the pews.) Their peers could over hear and also see how long they took. This didn't give the priest time to do much besides say things like, "Try not to get angry," with no guidance, advice, or counsel. My students would leave confession and say that they didn't find themselves lighter after, that they didn't find it valuable. I tried to describe what confession could be like when done outside of a five minute window. I would never hold someone in confession a long time against them. They deserve a beautiful confession experience, not an assembly line.

I have always had this very emotional reaction to the whole "it is a grave sin to deny your husband sex without a good reason" bit. It is something that brings shame and anxiety to me. I have had very traumatic (and to be clear I do not mean sexual assault or rape) sexual experiences from when I was a teen up until marriage (using sex in place of where I needed love). The way culture shapes us to view sex from tv, music, media, and porn...the expectations that go along with it are extremely dangerous and life altering. It has taken a lot of healing and growing in my spiritual life to determine that. Being in a marriage with a spouse who has no interest in making sex a holy act or growing in holiness together (or practicing NFP, instead wanting to sterilize) has made our marriage so broken and pushed us so far away from one another, there has been infidelity. So, to reiterate, hearing "it is a grave sin to deny your husband sex without a very good reason" really punches me in the gut... because I am unsure of what the church considers a "good reason" but I am praying the Lord takes it case by case.

I am so sorry for your extreme hurt in the past. I can relate to some of that trauma I am sure. Maybe someone who is more qualified than I can respond to your main point, but I just wanted to offer, as a person who has gone through trauma, that this will certainly apply itself to your unique situation. Also the fact that your husband is being unfaithful-- that in itself is a huge issue and if you are not safe in the marriage that is very good grounds to deny your husband in that regard. The trauma you may be going through, the lack of safety--whether this be emotionally or physically, is a very "good reason".

    • @elizabethschmitz5435
      @elizabethschmitz5435 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, speaking for women who have gone through or are going through abuse(physical violence, Sexual betrayal or abuse etc.), this can be a very painful topic and this needs to be strongly iterated: that if you are currently unsafe for whatever reason, you can --of course--morally deny your husband.

    • @clairemeanslight8627
      @clairemeanslight8627 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Delphia Lucania my husband is Catholic…it has nothing to do with that. The point is that men these days are taught by our culture that porn is a normal part of becoming a man and along with that comes expectations and being treated as an object in sex.
I did not suffer abuse of any kind, I was just a victim of the culture who told me that sex was a normal part of a relationship. I had low self esteem and was easily manipulated. I married my husband when I did not have the faith I do now and we have grown apart.

I have been struggling with whether to receive kneeling or not. I want to receive our Blessed Lord as reverently as I can, but it is awkward when there is a line of people behind you. I have also struggled with it because I don’t want to make a scene or become a focal point that draws people’s attention away from the sacrament. It’s not usually good to just do whatever everyone else is doing, but in this case my challenge is not wanting to bring any focus on myself.

Don't give into that voice. The Catholic Church exists to worship Our Lord and to be a sign of contradiction when necessary. The fact that you feel pressure from others to honor Our Lord LESS at Mass tells me you're in the wrong parish and it is not good for your soul. You should look for a local Latin Mass where everyone receives kneeling, like all Catholics did for many centuries. :)

Dear Matt, if you read this I have one objection to something in this conversation. 1. your comments on the novus ordo were a bit bizarre, firstly greatly praising it, then speaking of it in adjectives that sounded high-handededly and harshly dismissive. 2. i don't know where on earth these traditionalists get the gaul and authority to speak also publically against the Mass. eg. I like latin Mass too, but dissing and disparaging the other Holy Mass amazes me, novus ordo done well is perfect in the eyes of many others (and these comments to us sound arbitrary, snobby and self-important to a level that astounds) and I've heard it from others, and it astounds me, the arrogance of it, and on what and whose authority. I wonder also if you don't idolise beauty more than Christ in these comments, I don't know. I wonder also if you are not guilty of some kind of sin in speaking this way, slandering and undermining faith in the Mass. Anycase, the comments were so contradictory, the message I got was that even a reformed novus ordo Mass, with latin, good music, reverence, was banale, sloppy !!! Dude, be careful how you speak of Christ's holy Mass, as if you are the last arbiter on what is ok... I don't agree with Francis' solution, decision, not at all... but I'm not sure JPII or Benedict would not cringe at hearing you speak that way, they'd fear to pronounce this way themselves... you guys need to repent of this, no ? I'm not sure, but I'm not sure why it astounds me hearing such comments. Go reform the novus ordo first, then you can speak in this amazing way....

Gentlemen, I must begin by saying I'm a fan of the both of you. However, I am utterly disappointed in your common stance on standing to receive Our Lord at the Novus Ordo. I have not nor will not ever understand the discrepancies between the way Jesus is handled in the TLM and NO. We don't kneel at a Latin Mass to receive Jesus because we are at a Latin Mass. We kneel because we are receiving Jesus. Unless you wish to argue that Jesus is somehow different in the Eucharist of a NO Mass (Which I assume you couldn't possibly believe...) then please, always kneel to receive Our Lord. Do not pay heed to what is going on around you. Keep your gaze fixed on His presence. In essence, get over yourselves.

Matt injecting a random comment about his hatred of "transgender ideology" (i'd like to see him define that without invoking random stories of child re-assignment as in the past, which most people are against and is illegal in most places) right in the middle of a discourse about "love your enemy and your neighbour because they are often the same person" shows how far we still have to come in the Church today in practicing what we preach.
People, who are NOT EVEN CATHOLIC, believing the wrong thing is a much, much smaller problem than people DOING the wrong thing, especially those people who ARE Catholic. Spending the next 50 years worrying about some people choosing to wear a suit instead of a dress because it helps them cope with their lives while saying nothing about hundreds of thousands of sex abuse cases that were covered up in France in the last 50 years would be an exercise in moral panic of the stupidest order.
