Add to the list! What else can Protestants accept? And yes, yes, you as a Catholic think they should accept it all, but what I'm asking is what should they have no trouble accepting. There are many things that needlessly divide Protestants and Catholics. I offered 7 such things in the vid above. Would love your take!

Your purgatory talk you can also justify or proof with scripture that there is purgatory is Matthew 5:25,"Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny." And you know they are not talking about hell because it says you WILL get out. And we k ow that in Hell you do not come out of there

Purgatory as "final sanctification". Unless they believe that you keep on sinning in heaven and Jesus just covers your sin (would anyone really defend that), then they have to believe that you will no longer sin in heaven. And yet they believe (rightly in almost all cases) that you are a sinner right up to the moment of death. So what happens? Final Sanctification. Which is final purification. Which apparently God provides as one last favor ( you certainly don't purify yourself). Thus they should accept this basic element of the doctrine if not a few other elements (and there are very few to which we are obligated). And as for one of those other elements - the pain (however it is understood)- is it really hard to believe this sort of "healing" might not involve something "painful". Natural analogy #1 - Parent about to put some medicine on a wound of their child: "now this is going to hurt a little". #2 - For those who have had serious massage - as the professional massage therapists say - this is "good pain". It hurts but you feel much better afterwards.

CS Lewis said that you have to get to know your own tradition before you can get to know other ones. Because you need a reference point from which to understand things.
I think a lot of Protestants are fairly clueless as to their own traditions. So it doesn’t really help to mix and match traditions into a Frankenstein church with no real understanding as to why your church rejected something in the first place. Perhaps it’s better to encourage Protestants to really dig deep into their own theologians and understand why they believe what they do about Catholic practices. If Catholicism is right, then there’s nothing to fear.

    Matt,
I’m not sure if this is something you do on your channel but I thought I’d ask anyway. As a former Calvinist and one who is looking more into Orthodoxy and Catholicism, I was utterly shocked by the amount of heresies embedded within Calvinist doctrine. These heresies are monothelitism, monoenergism, and nestorianism. What was also equally surprising to me is that some Protestants even accept the sixth ecumenical council despite being at odds with their belief of monergistic salvation. While Calvinism is one theological school which really centralizes monergism, I believe it is present in all Protestant denominations.
So....with that being said...it would be very interesting and helpful if you went through the councils with Cameron and your audience. These are all things every Christian should believe, but as you get further into the council you quickly discover that Protestantism does not withstand these orthodox councils. You have done this before when you stated that Protestants should be able to call Mary “Theotokos,” yet many respond with Nestorian ideas of Christ’s two natures. The councils are essential to the faith and are the best evidence to show that the church cannot be the church with only sola scriptura.

Hey, great question! It's based on premise that "Nothing unclean may enter Heaven" (Rev 21,27). Now we enter Heaven if we have been justified, our sins forgiven. But when you sin, you not only cause the evil of the sin itself, but also habituate your soul to sin. It's like if you steal a bike; the guy may forgive you, but you still have to give back the bike. 1 Cor 3,15 talks about having your works tested and the unworthy fragments burnt or purged away. Our Lord Himself speaks of purgatory as a prison where you have to pay your debt (Matt 5,23-26).

Salvation is therefore a process according to Scripture, not one-time event and not by faith alone as wrongly taught by Reformers. Sanctification is the work God (1 Thes 5:23, 2 Thes. 2:13) but we are not simply passive but work together with His grace (Rom. 8:28, 1 Cor. 15:10, Phil. 2:12). I'm a protestant (reformed Presbyterian) and do not want to become catholic, but I'm so broken over the divide in the Church, especially in the ever-increasing division and chaos in the world. We're all at Christ's table. There's a lot of value in the traditions and disciplines of the catholic church that many protestants could benefit from, and I think vice versa. I often ask Catholic co-workers and friends what the meaning is behind making the sign of the cross, doing Hail Marys, or having statues of Saints in their homes, and all I get is blank stares and “I don’t know” or “I just do it because I’m Catholic and that’s what we do.” 🤷🏽‍♂️

I am protestant and let me say first that I love Matt Fradd!! He is my brother in Christ.Watch his videos all the time. He is doing important work. Love his heart! As a protestant I don't have a problem with some of these. Some I do, some I have questions about. Here we go....From my understanding of the Bible, Christ died for my sin and the sin of the world. He paid the price, He redeemed my soul. All I have to do is accept this beautiful, FREE gift by acknowledging my sin and my need for a Savior, ask Him into my heart to reign as Lord. I am saved (as we protestants say) but I am not perfect or sinless. But, after salvation the sanctification begins. That is what the rest of my days on this Earth consist of. He is continually sanctifying me. But, when I die I will still be a sinful person. My question for Matt is, the Bible says Jesus' blood is sufficient to forgive my sin, so why does something else need to happen after I die before I go to heaven? Your analogy about cleaning up before you go into someone's home seems to me that we as Christians are not truly covered by the blood of THE LAMB- The ULTIMATE sacrifice for our sins.
Another question is about praying the rosary. I don't have a problem with holding the rosary. I think it's beautiful, those kind of things are very nice, just like making the sign of the cross, I think it is good. I think protestants need much more of this kind of thing. But, when you were talking about it helping you to pray because you are not very good at it or you are bored, I kinda winced at that. I believe praying and seeking God is part of our sacrifice and daily dying to ourselves, especially when we don't feel like it. (I am not saying this happens with me everyday but it is the goal all day long) The rosary making it easier would seem that one may just be going through the motions or even fulfilling an obligation to get prayer in everyday. I LOVE praying God's word back to Him and I love the idea of praying prayers that great people before us prayed. I love praying anything I feel praises God. But, for most protestants it seems like when the priest tells you to go and pray a certain number of hail Marys, that you are trying to pay for your own sin...that if you don't, you won't be forgiven. Protestants believe (as you probably know) that Jesus sent THE Helper, the Holy Spirit and He makes intercession for us.
This deals with another question about praying to Saints or asking them to pray for us...why would we do that when we can go straight to the Lord ourselves? Hebrews 4:16 says, Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Sometimes we don't know how to pray and the Bible says in Romans 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
I have always been confused when my mother-in-law prays to a certain Saint because she lost something and he is over lost things.... To a protestant it looks like others are elevated to the level of God. I know you said they are not and I believe your heart. I am not sure all Catholics believe the same. it is almost like they are superstitious.
I have to say one thing to Cameron....are you really a protestant if you've never heard of Rick Warren????? Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!
I hope all this comes across the way I meant it to....kind.... and in search of truth always. Thank you for your videos!!!

    • @libbycatherine
      @libbycatherine 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My understanding of praying to the saints is that it's like asking a friend to pray for you on this side of heaven. My problem with this is that prayer is a way for us to communicate with the Lord. Nowhere does the Bible say it can be used to communicate with each other. It's an act of worship, and should only be directed to Him as such. As a kid I'd ask the Lord to pass on a message to my great grandma after she passed, not the other way around!
As a fellow protestant on this channel, your points are spot-on.
But some day all these things will be sorted out by God himself and we will understand and be one body without divisions. The former things will have passed, and I think right worship will be clear.
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. I'm convinced that applies to Catholics and Protestants alike. Not all protestants are born again however, neither Catholics. The wind blows where it pleases (John 3:8).

Scripture says God saves us through faith (Eph. 2:8) and through Sanctification (2 Thes. 2:13). Salvation is therefore a process according to Scripture, not one-time event and not by faith alone as wrongly taught by Reformers.
Scripture nowhere says that born again comes through saying "sinner prayer". Scripture does relate baptism with newness of life (Rom. 6:4)

Glory to Jesus Christ! ... a different interpretation of (6:27), the direction of the sign of the cross ... In the earliest centuries, when everyone was under Roman rule, they did things culturally in the Greek way, (Eastern), so everyone made the sign of the cross from right to left. The order was according to the words said, which in Greek would have been ... "and of the Holy Spirit"..., as we do in English now. When the church was finally accepted in Rome, and Latin became the common language, the wording became "... and of the Spirit Holy..." (Try it in Latin... and in most Latin-based languages, this still holds, except I think French.) The point is, in most cultures, the right-hand side is equated with the holy, the good, the 'right', and the left-hand side is equated with evil, the bad,... you get the point. So when the word "holy" was said, you're touching your right shoulder. It became the norm, when all Catholic countries prayed in Latin. When the vernacular was encouraged, (Vat II), the form of movement remained the point of unity, whether or not the words swapped back. In the Eastern Churches, they still did the Greek way. (Ukrainian, too -- My background.)

My sense is that the sign of the cross is something protestants, historically, chose not to do in order to distinguish themselves from Catholics. I haven't researched it, so that may be wrong. But as a protestant myself, I've never heard any teaching against the sign of the cross. It was just simply something we didn't do. I see absolutely no reason protestants can't do it if they feel compelled to. I practice meditation to prepare my mind for prayer. I am on my knees for both but have slightly different hand positions for each. None of that is strictly necessary. But it works for me. It facilitates the practice, so I chose to make it a habit.

6.5/7. But then again, I am an Anglican, with a great respect for some aspects of Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox theology and practice. I pray the Jesus prayer, and do the Rosary.
I believe that all churches who believe in the Real Presence in the Eucharist, e.g. Orthodox, Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican & Methodist, can work on ironing out their differences... and accept a small spectrum of dogma, within certain limits... to achieve full communion. (Not those churches who have embraced post-modernist moral relativism though mind.) E.g. most of the reasons for the North-South schism instigated by Luther (& Calivin & Zwingli) were misunderstandings... and also the Solas and faith vs. works are also often misunderstood. Faith leads to Works, and Faith without Works highlights either false or skin-deep 'faith'. Also faith and belief are not one and the same.

That’s very interesting to me! I grew up evangelical, had a period of doubt that I’m still wrestling with where I was attending a non-denominational evangelical church on and off, but I feel this growing call to the Catholic Church. The sacraments, the traditions, and the Eucharist appeal to me but I am not sure whether I will join, because I feel that I will lose much of my own faith tradition, like the beautiful Protestant hymns. I have a vision that I may marry a Catholic man, God willing.

On the use of icons/images and sacramentals, Christ is the 'Logos' and the Ikonos or Image of the unseen God who became Incarnate, just justly sanctified all things to be used fir the glory of God. I'm sure Matt could have expanded on that to explain why gestures (kneeling, orans, etc), the use of prayer beads and scripture (as in a book form, rather than oral-mental), use of icons and incense, are all 'just' as long as these are used in a manner to glorify God.

Hi Matt, a question on the concept of Purgatory that you brought up. At face value, it doesn't seem that Purgatory is actually ordered toward the pragmatic "straightening out" of the sinner but is punishment as a function of justice.
    1) E.g. Baptism remits all temporal punishment, but it'd be a stretch to say that if an adult convert died *immediately* after his Baptism that he would be totally free from all attachment to sin, all defects, all vicious habits, etc.; however they would not have to endure Purgatory for any of the sins that they had committed pre-Baptism.
    2) Purgatory is a place of punishment and healing; one does not receive any additional graces or merit there. So, it does not seem that one would there receive anything to remove vices (by the addition of the contrary virtues) or the breaking of these inordinate attachments as such things have no penal aspect.
    Thoughts on this?

If you start to have peace because you have the beads that’s idolatry as well but as a reminder or guidance for prayer is great. Like the vids. Thanks y’all.

  • @el-sig2249
    @el-sig2249 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Wow! It's terrible theology for Ratzinger to say that purgatory is some kind of instant sanctification! 😳 The Church may not have a dogmatic definition on the doctrine but the Magisterium is clear and the cult of the saints (their mystical experiences) bears clear witness.
The Ratzinger proposal suggests that the lifelong process of sanctification (which is completed in purgatory) is somehow skipped to the end. This ignores the role of free will which must be fully exercised without the burden of any attachments to sin. This is how Grace makes the soul perfect and worthy for Heaven.
At Fatima our Lady spoke of different time periods for souls in purgatory. You can take that to the bank!

    • @sillybearss

To my understanding, it is possible. Not encouraged, but possible. The catholic one would have to get an exception from the parish (or something in the same line) and then both have to promise that they will educate their children under catholic beliefs. Not sure about the children's baptism though.
The difficult part would probably be in deciding which church to go to, since the 2 might go to different churches. This may confuse the children and be a challenge to all of their faiths.
      All in all, it's possible.
