  • Today, I'm joined around the bar table by my good friend, Fr. Gregory Pine, to discuss "10 Minute Topics," based on suggestions from Pints with Aquinas patrons.
    So, sit back, and learn something. And maybe drink an adult beverage while you're at it!

      I have no beverages in my immediate vicinity. I have a liquid here, in as much as honey is a liquid, its a highly viscous liquid so to drink it would be gross.
      I like this speaking style as its like hearing prose, but with the accent its a bit difficult to understand.

    Kentucky is my birthplace and sometime home - there is no better bourbon than Woodford, and everyone here knows it. That said all the bourbons Fr. Pine mentioned are also quite good - especially Weller and McKenna.

      I'm looking at the two of you side by side there, and with your PwA banner in the background, and you speaking about whiskey and cigars all the time, and I'm thinking : man, one way to step it up there would be to add some post-processing decoration to that video presentation. Like a nice wood-like frame or something, and a nice, simple but stylish separator between the two of you. I'm sure that, if you asked, you'd have a dozen artsy Patreons ready to design something properly beautiful that would focus the look on your video (but I'm not one of them). Give it a thought ! I for one would watch even more intensely, if that's at all possible.

    I looked into the Lay order of Dominicans in the US and they seem to be quite progressive and social justice focused, which seems different from Fr. Pine and the men of the Thomas Institute. Any idea why that is? Or is my perception off?

      @salal98110 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pat- where do you get that idea? Just curious. I’m looking into it too, but see the opposite.

      @@salal98110 Well I found this website which has several Leftist priorities on their section on Justice and Peace:
      domlife.org/dominican-family/laity/
      But this website seems to be more conservative, so I'm not really sure.

      Ah, I see. One woman posted about a wide cornucopia of denominations and various prayer approaches, and Centering Prayer was listed by her as a Christian form of prayer. That is concerning.
      Here is the Western Province, and their document on prayer- a proper Catholic approach. This is what I am looking for; it seems the majority of the Order is unsullied by syncretism: oplaitywest.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/ContemplativePrayer.pdf

      @@salal98110 I saw centering prayer listed as well on one of their "spirituality" sections...very concerning indeed.

    Is it evidence of a disordered soul that I want to talk with Father Pine about whiskey more than about theology?

    • @bearistotle2820
      @bearistotle2820 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all! It is totally fine to talk about whiskey and other such pleasurable things. You can’t be expected to be 100% philosophical all the time.

    I have great admiration and respect for Fr. Pine and I believe he is truly knowledgeable on a variety of topics, however, I have to disagree with him on the topic of changes within the Dominican Rite. Fr. Augustine Thompson O.P has written an article on the 'Preconciliar Reforms of the Dominican Rite Liturgy 1950 - 1962 and 1962 - 1969' that describes in detail the substantial changes (some are good changes, some are not) with the Dominican Rite. The article is approximately 36 pages long and well worth the read and especially for those interested in Dominican spirituality. It discusses the reforms of Holy Week for the Rite, and changes within the rubrics to match the changes issued by John XXIII on the Roman Rite for 1965. Prayers that were obligatory became optional such as the Litany to the Blessed Virgin traditionally recited after Compline on Saturdays became optional and the prayer on Good Friday for the Jews was also changed to remove the word "perfidis" which meant 'unbelieving'. A shortening of the Office and also major calendar changes that affected both the Mass and the Offices. There are many more examples like this in the article. As I said, I greatly admire Fr. Pine but I have to respectfully disagree with him on the topic of changes within the Dominican Rite.
