You missed one thing, those little things has a mark on it and all of those should be line up in the same direction of the little mark on it so it can run just in one directtion
Hey, been having some issues with mine not catching, ie spinning without cranking the motor.. it eventually catches, but is this something that can cause a catastrophic failure, or just electric start problems? I also have a kicker..
Hey man...Hope you don't mind I run a question by you as you seem very knowledgable. Just bought a used 2003 LTZ400. Was running fine and I went to change the oil/filter. Me being a dumbass and not having enough patience I thought the Starter Torque Limiter Cover was where the oil filter is behind. I didn't realize I was on the wrong side of the engine. :) Long story short I popped off the starter torque limiter cover and low and behold the torque limiter fell out. When I went to reinstall it I couldn't get the cover to sit flush. Not sure if I should lightly tap it with a rubber mallet or what. I tried using the 3 8mm bolts to pull it tight and snapped one of the holes on the cover. I've since ordered a new one but was wanting to know if it's safe to leave the ATV in neutral and still be able to roll it around? Currently I have the cover sitting on but don't have the limiter reinstalled. Also any tips on reassembly would be awesome. Thanks so much!
5 years later but i just did the exact same thing. Was indeed very difficult to get back on. On the off chance anyone reads this what worked for me was laying the bike on its side. Not sure why but it went right back in then.
hello , i am changing the cover only . question: if i move the flywheel while moving starter gears . will i have to check TDC or anything prior to putting cover back?
I know this was asked a year ago but someone else might have the same question today. The answer is NO you don't have to check a thing! When the starter motor turns it spins the idler gear which spins the large gear behind the flywheel; On the back of the flywheel is the starter clutch which works like a reverse Recluse (centrifugal clutch) the starter gear hub sits inside the clutch and all those roller bearings in the center of the starter clutch grab onto the starter gear hub which turns the crankshaft (motor). Once the motor starts the roller bearings are thrown away from the starter gear hub so it is no longer applying pressure to the hub. The starter motor along with the starter gear and idler gear doesn't spin while the motor is running so there is nothing to time. The only time the starter motor turns is when you push in the starter button. Also I have been racing 1.5-to-2-hour cross country races on a 2008 LTZ400 so I use my starter a lot and have yet to have any other starter issues than the starter cluch which I have replaced 4 in 16 years. Usually they will give you a warning like you hit the starter button and the starter spins but not the motor, you can try and start it several times and all at once it will catch and start. It is because those roller bearings in the clutch are not grabbing the starter gear hub and you better replace it soon or be prepared to push start it.
I’m wondering the same thing, Dustin Wickham whenever you went to push the start button was it slow to start? Like sometimes it would turn over (slower than usual) and other times it would bind up?

Was the issue you had a grinding noise when it's idling ?
