The Maritime Line (Falmouth to Truro) ‘From the City to the Sea’ (17th June 2024)

Welcome to this railway video from Cornwall.
The Maritime Line ‘From the City to the Sea’ was filmed on Monday 17th June (Running Time 29 minutes 35 seconds).
The Maritime Line runs in the valley of the River Fal for 8 miles from Truro to Falmouth on the south coast of Cornwall.
I last visited this line around 40 years ago and was delighted to see how well supported it was with trains operating a much improved 30 minute service in both directions.
My journey began at the terminus of the line at Falmouth Docks Station which is both close to the docks themselves as well as to Pendennis Castle. I walked to the nearby station of Falmouth Town which opened in 1970.
The other intermediate stations on the line were at;
Penmere (Platform) - A very pretty station on the northern outskirts of Falmouth which has won numerous awards for its floral displays.
Penryn - The station has a 440 yard passing loop allowing 2 Class 150 DMU’s to operate on the branch for much of the day. It was installed in 2008 at a cost of nearly £5 million pounds. When constructing the loop a novel approach was adopted which avoided reopening the opposite platform along with the need to construct a footbridge. The formerly disused northern end of the existing platform was reinstated and called Platform 2 with an extension being added to the southern end which is now called Platform 1. The southbound and northbound trains cross over at this point (I explain more in the video).
Perranwell - This is the least used station on the line but still attracts in excess of 30,000 passengers annually. When the station first opened it was called ‘Perran’ but this was later extended to Perranwell to avoid confusion with nearby Penryn.
My journey ends on the Cornish Mainline at Truro Station.
The video ends with the GWR Cornishman service entering Platform 3 on its journey up country to London Paddington along with a Castle Cass 43 HST service on Platform 2 from Plymouth to Penzance.
