All Aboard ‘The Dartmouth Steam Railway’ - 25th June 2024
Hello Everyone and welcome to this new video:
‘All Aboard The Dartmouth Steam Railway’.
Recorded on Tuesday 25th June 2024.
Running Time 26 minutes.
In this video I will be travelling along one of the finest steam railways in the country.
The scenery along this picturesque line is breathtaking from the splendour of English Riviera coastline through to the picture-postcard view across the River Dart to the maritime port of Dartmouth.
The journey from Paignton to Kingswear is almost 7 miles long and opened on 10th August 1864. Isambard Kingdom Brunel had originally intended to take the railway to Dartmouth. This would have required a bridge to take the railway across the River Dart about a mile and a half upstream at Greenway. However, the admiralty objected and so the railway was taken to Kingswear on the opposite side of the River Dart. The solution was to use a floating bridge in the form of a chain ferry to take passengers to and from Dartmouth.
A railway station had already been built at Dartmouth but the station never had a railway in the first place, no tracks, nothing! Today, it operates as a restaurant/ bistro, but railway and riverboat tickets can still be purchased from an adjacent kiosk.
To this day there are two ferry’s in operation carrying both passengers and vehicles along with a foot passenger ferry carrying passengers between Kingswear Station and Dartmouth which is included in the price of the train ticket.
I thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip. The railway has some fascinating rolling stock and it is easy to see why thousands of tourists and railway enthusiasts visit the railway every year.
Thanks very much for watching.

Lovely video. While I have not ridden on a train on this line I have walked along its route from Paignton to Brixham - and I saw the train running back and forth along the track. I read that there used to be a spur out to Brixham at one stage - but that it's been removed. You had lovely weather - that whole coast is a beautiful example of the English/West Country seaside. It's a pity that the train no longer stops at Greenway - as that is where you alight for access to the Greenway Estate - owned for many years by Agatha Christie.

With climate change growing apace, we can expect further breaches of the line in the Dawlish area. It would make sense to extend the line through to Bere Alston and thus to Plymouth. @@PhilipJenkins-v1b Thanks Philip and I do so agree with you. Having just the one means of access from Exeter along the Exe Estuary through Starcross to Dawlish & Teignmouth is a risky strategy as any problems along this stretch of line has major implications for the route through to Paignton/Torquay, Plymouth, and the whole of Cornwall as we saw at first hand back in 2014. There is no doubt that reopening the former PD&SWJR route from Exeter to Plymouth via Okehampton would be prohibitively expensive but given the success of the reopened Okehampton to Exeter line there would seem to be a sound commercial and economic business case for extending the route to the west of Okehampton at some stage in the future. Nice video, I was there in 2023 great station. I must say I don't like these monstrous tower structures for lifts, but why doesn't the railway just build a wooden structure across the rails at platform height for disabled people at the far west end of the platforms? The line is unlikely to be extended and only DMUs use it, so why not just build a wooden stucture at platform height across the rails? If they ever did reopen the line westwards it could easily be taken down. This way it wouldn't alter the look of the station compared to a lift arrangement like at Dawlish, and would enable disabled people to see the things of interest on the other platform. John

@@jeanpalmer141 Thanks Jean and I’m glad you enjoyed the video. It was great to go back to Okehampton Station after so many years and to see it looking so well presented and welcoming. The line is certainly performing above expectations with the latest ORR figures for 2023/24 showing annual passenger numbers having exceeded 300k. Much as I would like to see the line extended to the west I agree with you that this seems very unlikely in view of the work that would be required to bring the Meldon Viaduct up to standard. Perhaps more likely in the short to medium term would be to reopen the 5 mile stretch from Bere Alston to Tavistock which has seen a number of feasibility studies over recent years. However, this project seems to have fallen by the wayside, at least for the time being, with the recent change of government. I completely agree with your thoughts about footbridges. During my visit to Cornwall back in June I saw preparations to remove the Victorian footbridge at St Erth Station and there are also a number of similar accessible structures being installed here in Scotland, the most recent being at Dumfries Station. I guess it reflects the age we live in but it does seem a shame that a compromise can’t be reached so that our railway stations can be accessible to everyone without the need to remove some of the beautiful Victorian structures that are so much a part of our railway history. My aim was to record the GWR Class 150 Sprinter at each of the 9 stations along the Tamar Valley Line as well as capturing it crossing the magnificent Calstock Viaduct. It was a challenging video to plan and film given that trains only operate once every 2 hours along the route so timing was critical as I moved between each of the locations. The result was a video that is packed with so many memories from childhood journeys along the line. I am so pleased you enjoyed watching it.

@@Sam_Green____4114 Hi Sam, this was my first visit back to the area after about 30 years away so it is a difficult call to make. The line has always been well supported by locals as the Bere Peninsula in particular is difficult to access by road. Patronage is less than the other branch lines in Cornwall such as Looe, Falmouth, St Ives and Newquay given that they are all major tourism destinations. The Tamar Valley has always been a hidden gem and was a favourite destination of mine when living in the area. Very enjoyable documentary! This railway line is a masterpiece. I am very grateful to the many workers who built it in the first instance and to the campaign group who saved it when threatened with closure. However I do feel very concerned nowadays about the future of this line. I started commuting on this late about 15 years, when living in Settle and working in West Yorkshire but since 2022 many commuters have stopped using this line...and it is not just because of the effect of the lockdown and new working from home arrangements. From talking to fellow passengers and other rural residents, the changes to the T&C of the Dales railcard have discouraged many people from using it in the morning. It's a real shame. I am often the only person waiting on the platform at Kirkby Stephen and on the first coach. Northern Rail are penalising commuters and the local rail user group doesn't seem to be as effective as it was? First train from Carlisle to Leeds should be full of people going to work, to college, going to hospital appointments in Bradford/Leeds but instead it's painfully empty. Well done for the documentary on Settle - beautiful place!

The S&C line has a very proud history and I have thoroughly enjoyed recording videos at many of the stations along the line over the past couple of years. I recently returned to the Westcountry for a holiday after leaving the area around 25 years ago and was absolutely blown away by the large numbers of passengers using the railways in Devon & Cornwall, particularly on the branch lines to Looe, Falmouth and St Ives. The frequency of trains on these routes were very good and I have often thought that running additional services on the S&C line might help attract more passengers, particularly tourists during peak season.
