I work at an LGS and I think the fact that I had 4 MTG regulars get into Pokémon in the past 2 months alone says something. And I mean get into it as in investing in booster boxes and learning to play and show up to events. We cap out of Pokémon event nights every week but MTG commander nights stay at half the audience.
Right now. It has always been a huge opportunity. It is the largest TCG in the world, and has never had its products devalue like MTG, Metazoo, DBZ, and Flesh & Blood have. All their products jump by a minimum of 25% over 2 years, and most by 50% or more over 5 years. I don't see that happening with MTG Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow for 7-10 years to get to 25% to 50% increase unfortunately. Only Magic premium sets are worth investing in these days like Double Masters and their Remastered sets.
@sephon var I agree.. I'd probably add dominaria united to that category, due the the chase for original Legends, and Brothers War, being the first boxes with serial numbered cards in them.. I think the gamblers premium on those boxes long term will be strong.

@CloudLovesEgg yes 10 is a low number... It's wiser to invest the same money (that you bought for 10 boxes) into stocks, crypto or whatever and get a better return on investment. But if you're still braindead, go ahead and protect your 10 boxes which also costs more money and pray that buyers don't do bait and switch on you or mail lost. Anyways, on the other hand if you buy 100, 1000, 10000 boxes - that's a different story, you can actually get a great return number on these huge inventories and if you lose a few boxes to scammers, you will still be fine.
Open up a few cases of pokemon booster boxes and find out how hard it is to pull that ultra secret rare floppy taco. You won't exactly pull enough to get close to cover the costs of the booster boxes quite yet.
I think a lot of people like me waited to see what Charizard UPC was going to do and now that its easy to find at MSRP we have extra $$$ to spend and are spending it on boosters to keep sealed before Sword and Shield ends.
I agree with others, Rudy has been a bit of a noob (do we still use this word) when it comes to Pokémon, but we still love you 😋. If you look closely at the Pokémon company, they always tend to keep a close eye on how the fans are feeling. When all those scalpers came out, they printed more, when people got nervous of their printer buyout the just kept the numbers low, and what they really used it for was to be able and create specialty boxes with shiny cards, etc. When the market began feeling a bit too overstimulated, collectors like myself turned to just buying their favorite characters or psuedo-sets within the sets such as the "alt-art" cards. The alt-art cards are beautiful if you haven't check them out, they have awesome comic book or manga-style art as opposed to the anime-style so it gives them a more "artsy" sophisticated feel for the older players. Cheers Pokemon, 🥂 to another amazing year and hopefully you'all slow down a bit on the sets stuff too (which it seems like they are doing).
Rudy my man, imho Pokemon is doing well because all age brackets are interested. 6+ years are watching it, playing video games of it, and thus they also want to collect it. My kids love collecting them, they're better investors than dad this last 12 months.
The alternative art cards are just extremely rare and hard to pull in the last 12 months I have opened 3 to 500 packs not one alternative art my first TH-cam video I ever filmed of a pack of opening of Pokemon was actually the alternative art Tyranitar from Battle styles ironically and since then I have pulled a handful of secret rares and other cards but no alternative Arts whatsoever

@@robzombie3324 and I definitely agree with you a revised dual would definitely sell better check out some of the search results on eBay compared to Vintage Pokemon the mid to Upper tiers of magic completely blows Pokemon out of the water but there are always exceptions
@@robzombie3324 But unfortunately Pokemon's player and collector base is ten's of thousands of times larger then that of Magic the Gathering, and with what Hasbro is doing, the MTG base is shrinking due to fatigue and anger, while the Pokemon base just keeps growing due to the games and and new kids entering the collecting market. Magic could disappear over time if they do not correct the ship, yet it is likely impossible for Pokemon to collapse at this point. I collect both games, and my Pokemon cards are far outperforming the Magic Cards currently. Dual lands down 40% currently and dropping.
I would buy the boxes and hold them. In a year check the psa population of chase cards. It should give you an idea of its future growth. Too many 10 normally means slow or negative future growth.
I play Pokémon Rudy! Especially online. But my mind was blown by this Alt art price increase. I collect Sword and Shield series from the beginning and I check prices regularly to have an idea what is going on in my 'portfolio' and a few weeks ago some Pokémon TH-camr said something about those alt art price increases and holy cow, he was right. I immediately purchased Celebi V and Tyranitar V alt art and they are still creeping up. Gained 10% each approximately in a few weeks 😅 I also have a few other Alt arts for example Espeon V from Evolving skies. When I pulled that card from a pack a year ago it was worth close to 50 bucks. It is now at least 70€ and I see it many times being offered for 90€ even. That's a nice increase. Even a Blissey Alt art from Chilling Reign that I couldnt sell for 16€ is now going up towards 25€ lol I didn't sell it 😀.
I bought a Japanese Tyranitar V Alt Art from the Single Strike expansion just because it looked incredible to me! And then it just kinda sat there price-wise, but it looks like it's slowly rising again haha!
@@mAcroFaze Yeh the Tyranitar surely is a nice card! I try to collect japanese Character Rares currently alongside completing some English Sw&sh sets 😁👍
I bought a Pokemon league deck and some other pokemon products like 2 weeks ago. I had been a magic player since 2014. I had "played" Pokemon as a kid but the cards either went through the washing machine or I sold them as a teen for magic. After watching stuff on how to actually play and seeing the products AND seeing the prices of their stuff it is just so so so SO much better than Magic. In 2020 / 2021 I sold lots of my magic cards on tcgplayer but I still have one or two commander decks and I did buy the surge foil Warhammer decks (I do play Warhammer Age of Sigmar but never ventured into 40k but I like the lore). At this point Pokemon looks much more exciting and of course it has some childhood / nostalgic value. The company seems good and loyal and makes genuinely good looking products. I don't think I'll ever sell off all of my magic cards but I definitely don't plan on buying much Magic. Although, Brothers war spoilers look AMAZING in my opinion. I was very surprised by the full spoilers. If that set was released in 2016 or before it would make such a fun standard set and add so many good fun unique new things for commander. I don't think it'll have the same impact today especially if they overprint it but at least it has lots of good looking cards.
I collect pokemon cards, and i think you are right, its just organic interest and people want the alt arts specifically because the artworks are crazy!
I dont play Pokemon or collect, but i really had to say the trainer boxes are much more attractive than the magic bundles.....You get boosters, several dices....and sleeves....much more than magic bundles...If HASBRO is to DUMB to listen to their playerbase they deserve to fall!!!!
I mean to be fair it would take an astronomically stupid mess up for pokemon to fail given the circumstances of the i.p. I mean its fricken pokemon, everyone and their grandma loves it, it sells to all age groups especially with the massive boom of pokemon youtubers that built up the past few years. They really dont need to do much of anything to navigate the storm just keep printing cards of an i.p. everyone loves. It would take a full on Kanye West or something to screw up that free money train.
For what it's worth, I've noticed that Pokémon is doing A LOT of ads on youtube for their TCG, especially for starter kits for new players and how there's a huge Pokémon community to join. I've never, EVER seen any other TCG do that, and I'm convinced it must have driven a LOT of new eyes on the game. Hell, I was almost tempted to pick up a box of that starter to get back into the game after being spammed of thos adds.
@@randomsanctum I'm on TH-cam multiple times a day, every single day and I've seen these days multiple times, its as if TH-cam ads were noy the same for everyone.
It also has to do with the fact that many adults have a nostalgia for Pokemon since it was the game of their childhood, and young kids are constantly becoming interested in Pokemon due to the games and their friends. It is hard to find anyone today who doesn't know what Pokemon is these days. Pokemon continues to grow every day with a larger fan base.

I think your right Rudy, a lot of these boxes at the edge of the pandemic were a bit lackluster but they were hard to get. It's because everything was sold out for a long time because of them moving printing locations. They opened there new place and printed everything to oblivion. Alt arts are ridiculously prices though in my opinion. Beautiful cards though usually
I agree with every single thing in this video EXCEPT 1 BIG THING! Please here me out. I open an insane amount of booster boxes and sealed product as well as store and stash back booster boxes. These alternate arts are EXTREMELY challenging to pull. I've seen sets were I've pulled an absurd amount of them back to back to back, but I've also seen box after box after box of not hitting these alternate arts. They are amazing cards, prices will go up, but the alt arts are very very rare to pull.
so glad i got out of pokemon a few years ago while it was still cheap to play, can't imagine playing now and days with how much some of the cards go for. i remember when full art shaymin was the chase card and it was only $100
My thought is this: --The boom in 20/21 made anybody who was sitting on old vintage sealed product feel like mastermind kings with crazy profit margins if they liquidated. --Collectors (especially new collectors) started to consider the thought of making sure they didn't miss that opportunity boat again and started collecting huge sealed collections, which at the time was (and still is) sword and shield sets. --With lots of collectors sitting on swsh set sealed product, there's less demand on the sealed market and more on the singles. All these people sitting on sealed product don't want to rip their product so they jump online and order up all their single alt arts. --This aligns right with what you are saying that there will be something that has to follow this: Sealed will start to rise or the singles will come back down. I think it will be that sealed creeps up.
alt arts are an incredible combination of (relatively) rare + beautiful art. a home run for sure. will be interesting to see what the equivalent is in the upcoming scarlet/violet era, or if they continue alt arts
This has to do with how hard these alt arts are to pull. Have you seen the pull rates? It’s ridiculous, I’m switching my tactic from buying booster boxes to just buying the chase cards if It’s a alt art
The Pokemon singe prices are less attached to sealed product simply because the chances of pulling a desired single from a box are fuk and all :). It's not like the good old days of two Charizords per base set booster box.
Yes. You should be stocking up on these boxes, and that includes Crown Zenith which isn't out yet. (The final Sword and Shield set, and it's insane) I know you are the magic guy, but until Crimson and Violet base comes out, Pokemon is the stuff to buy.
Still good deals on alt art singles with LCS’s. I don’t even care if they move in the future, I bank on the sealed product to grow as opposed to singles
I'm going to guess we're seeing a bump in those singles because the final sets of sword and shield are coming out allowing people to finish collecting those special sets like the trainer gallery now... Not sure what will happen in the future, but like you said, if collectors/players are trying to complete things, game stores will realize they can buy and open boxes... Equilibrium will be found.
Most of the pokemon buyers are collectors. Alt arts are only 1 in 3 booster boxes. Buying boxes to get a few cards isn't worth the hassle and dealing with the bulk is obnoxious
Hello! Short time pokemon collector but BIG time in collecting / investing / over all knowlege. 1. Things to invest in RIGHT NOW THIS SECOND(AKA MODERN STUFF)!!!! Japanese Vmax Climax, a new high class set is coming out and these have already gone from 55-90$ in under 2 months because they are going out of print, 2. CHILLING REIGN, there is no way NO WAY that the blaizen alt art will stay the same amount, also the gold snorlax NOT THE MENTION IT HAS ALL THE LEGENDARY BRIDS IN ALT ART FOURM. 3. ( i hate to say this) Charizard UPC ( THE ONLY ACCEPTION TO THIS), is if u get them for 85-90$ and yes there are sites trying to get rid of these because the amount printed was unreal, 4. Japanese PT (alt art lugia) There is SO MUCH MORE MONEY IN JAPANESE POKEMON THEN ENG. Esp right now!! The 2 hottest sets that are out or getting pre ordered is PT (imma spell it wrong idgaf) pathagrim trigger. this set you want the Alt Art jugia, which a BGS 10 BLACK LABEL (10 in all 4 sub catagories) i believe fetched on ebay 8-9k!! 9K FOR A MODERN CARD why is this you ask? Oh its because pokemon japanese is seeing a massive shortage in printing runs and the distribs are not getting what they orderd, and these sets have some HOT HOT cards, another one i recoomend MAYBE going in on is High Class Vstar Uni (comes out dec 12) Now this is a high class set so it will be out for a long time until another High class is printed SO that my advices. do not buy this for investment on launch, please wait, The only reason i bought is because people WILL PAY 120$ A BOX AND IT BLOWS MY MIND. There are some other things i think investing can go along way but everyone knows eevee heros/evolving skies because of the umbreon. I dont have alot of money to play with so i DO NOT invest that much myself, But i watch the market every day and I am in over 10+ discords seeing what things to sell for and also i am a big seller myself on ebay/mercari/discord. Any questions on anything just drop below and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability :D
I work at a card store, on average pokemon sells the most, about 10,000 dollars a day. Then yu gi oh, about 1,000-5,000 a day. Then magic and all other card games at about 300-500 dollars a day.
Let's look at the facts. The Sword and Shield era is ending. We're going away from V cards to EX cards. These alt arts are probably never going to be reprinted, and if they will, it will be YEARS before they do. These art cards are basically a mini reserved list for Pokemon. And as time goes on, these perfect alternate art cards will go higher and higher. Magic needs to take some notes.

I tried to tell people to invest in Pokemon for over 10 year's. If people I know had listened to me, they would have had profited by 60-75%.
_"Psst! Psst! Hey, kid!! Yeah, you over there! With the binder backpack! Are you looking for a huge opportunity in luxury cardboard?! I got something that's perfect for you! Hear me out . . . Pokemon! Yes, Pokemon! Those babies continuously go to the moon, it's a continuous state of spiking, I tell you. Buy 'em, throw 'em in the bathroom, get rich. So, are you interested? Let's talk. Come here in the dark alley, I'm not allowed inside the LGS anymore."_
Should have made this video on Evolving skies in the summer!
Easiest 100% in my life.
@I Love Monkeys that's an awfully low number lol. 1,000 or more is better.
@CloudLovesEgg but hey, whatever floats your happy boat I suppose.
Open up a few cases of pokemon booster boxes and find out how hard it is to pull that ultra secret rare floppy taco.
You won't exactly pull enough to get close to cover the costs of the booster boxes quite yet.
Appreciate the content this is the kind of videos people need! Keep it up!
Love when Rudy pulls the Pokédex out
I think a lot of people like me waited to see what Charizard UPC was going to do and now that its easy to find at MSRP we have extra $$$ to spend and are spending it on boosters to keep sealed before Sword and Shield ends.
You seriously need to change your buying strategy (type of Pokemon products you've been buying)...
Just to be clear, I am not talking about new product, I'm talking about Reserved list stuff.
No one plays with Charizard, everyone that wants to play Vintage plays with Black Lotus. This perfectly encapsulates the fundamental difference between the games
Only an idiot would deny reality.
How liquid is Pokemon? Buy an EX/GD vintage Pokemon card and try to sell it and then do the same with a EX/GD Revised Dual. See which one sells faster.
stay mad
@@robzombie3324 no one is mad here...
Gotta love the pokemans
Just realized Rudy looks like an adult version of Anthony LaRusso from Cobra Kai.
There's a pretty widespread hype train going on for alt arts at the moment. All the influencers are on board.
This is going to become a Pokémon channel now.
rudys pokemon openings are the best!
Currently Evolving skies Umbreon vmax alt is avg $500+ raw and 1k+ in psa10
Yeah, and its japanese variant from Eevee heroes 1300-1400 dollars raw and over 2k in psa10. Crazy.
@@veronikamajerova4564 yea thats crazy
Rudy, because alt arts are really special, hard to pull and the future of these cards is looking bright like a taco.
Great video. I wish you did more pokemon videos
Are Elite Trainer boxes rise in prices as well?
Sandaconda v alt art is next 😂
Good thing i pulled two of them 😂
For what it's worth, I've noticed that Pokémon is doing A LOT of ads on youtube for their TCG, especially for starter kits for new players and how there's a huge Pokémon community to join.
I've never, EVER seen any other TCG do that, and I'm convinced it must have driven a LOT of new eyes on the game. Hell, I was almost tempted to pick up a box of that starter to get back into the game after being spammed of thos adds.
I'm on TH-cam multiple times a day, every single day, and I've never seen a single Pokemon ad.
@@sephonvar2129 true enough, pokemon is now a pretty old ip, ond that is starting to see its first generation of fans hit their middle age with more disposable income.
I have a number of friends who have been buying up these new sets of alt art cards for a while now it may just be supply shortage finally really dying up the market
I think your right Rudy, a lot of these boxes at the edge of the pandemic were a bit lackluster but they were hard to get. They got reprinted like hell, buttttttt the chase cards were really good and still very hard to get. So it won't recalibrate as much as you think cuz the print run is done. I think.
I’m here almost in March and damn you were right 😅
Just found you with this video, and I appreciate your Pokémon investing analysis. Liked and subscribed!
This was good. You should do more Pokémon videos
Shiiiiit. I was hopeing people wouldn’t notice, I’ve bought up about 20 bgs/psa 10 alt arts, and about 70 raw alts as I saw this happening about 18 months ago. When a card is 1/2000 chance to pull, you know it’s going to be expensive.
Rudy continues to ignore the disaster of Seance being mappable
Metapoo on the decline?
We wont be hearing about Metazoo until he needs to pump and dump the next set
Seance is currently competing with evolving skies!
Careful, Mike will respond here with one of his numerous fake accounts to call you a liar.
Rudy. Come on man. It’s me. I’ve been increasing my positions as much as a can. Don’t sleep on chilling Reign. I know you didn’t.
i miss when pokemon boxes were 80-90 each, i hope the big money bags people dont take a look at the pokemon market and ruin it for the fans of the game like myself
The eye of Rudy is upon pokemon.
Thank you WOTC for selling Pokemon to the right company to protect its legacy
That's not what happened, WOTC had license to print the cards but Nintendo Japan knew it could do better for the international brand and intellectual property so they ended the license agreement.
Lol wotc had no say in the matter
@@mindlightwave Thanks for clarifying that, I was wrong in how I worded that. All I'm saying is I'm glad how Pokemon turned out.
@@devoted2thaentertainment207 you worded it as if you didn't know what happened at all, and that's because you clearly didn't lol. Can't backtrack from that.

I bought this house in Florida and it came with a whole bathroom full of Pokemon cards. Are these worth anything?
No way to know. Create an auction with blurry pictures and let Reddit sort it out.
Psa is running grading specials and sword and shield is closing out. So now these are moving into collections who want all the alt arts, and stonk-dogs are buying them up to grade and flip.
It's because everything was sold out for a long time because of them moving printing locations. They opened there new place and printed everything to oblivion. Alt arts are ridiculously prices though in my opinion. Beautiful cards though usually
alt arts are also very tough to pull
How long before Rudy changes his youtube name to Base Set Investments?
This is now a Pokemon channel?
I agree with every single thing in this video EXCEPT 1 BIG THING! Please here me out. I open an insane amount of booster boxes and sealed product as well as store and stash back booster boxes. These alternate arts are EXTREMELY challenging to pull. I've seen sets were I've pulled an absurd amount of them back to back to back, but I've also seen box after box after box of not hitting these alternate arts. They are amazing cards, prices will go up, but the alt arts are very very rare to pull.
so glad i got out of pokemon a few years ago while it was still cheap to play, can't imagine playing now and days with how much some of the cards go for. i remember when full art shaymin was the chase card and it was only $100
My thought is this:
--The boom in 20/21 made anybody who was sitting on old vintage sealed product feel like mastermind kings with crazy profit margins if they liquidated.
Didn't we all switch over to pokemon after the 30th announcement?
Honestly---I've bought MTG since 2001 and am completely divested. Not one card or booster. I really believe they did it--they went too far.
Wait until he sees japanese Pokemon card prices pumping. ^^
alt arts are an incredible combination of (relatively) rare + beautiful art. a home run for sure. will be interesting to see what the equivalent is in the upcoming scarlet/violet era, or if they continue alt arts
What do you think about Silver Tempest?
This has to do with how hard these alt arts are to pull. Have you seen the pull rates? It’s ridiculous, I’m switching my tactic from buying booster boxes to just buying the chase cards if It’s a alt art
Where do you buy booster boxes
Pokémon over a 10 year period sealed destroys mtg also this happens when a block ends and we have a new Pokémon block coming
All that money MTG collectors/investors just acquired has to be reinvested somewhere.
The Pokemon singe prices are less attached to sealed product simply because the chances of pulling a desired single from a box are fuk and all :). It's not like the good old days of two Charizords per base set booster box.
Silver tempest is about to drop.....get in on it!
The alt arts are 1 per case Rudy. Pokémon pull rates for those alt arts are like 1/250 packs
back to this video at the end of January 2023 and this video is unbelievably on the money.
Yes. You should be stocking up on these boxes, and that includes Crown Zenith which isn't out yet. (The final Sword and Shield set, and it's insane)
I know you are the magic guy, but until Crimson and Violet base comes out, Pokemon is the stuff to buy.
I think MTG investors are jumping ship to Pokémon
Rudy keeps coming back because he's willing to say "it was never worth thirty thousand"
Cards and boxes going up what a concept maybe wotc can learn something from them.
No, Hasbro is to greedy to learn from the most popular and successful TCG in existence.
I've learned to buy pallets of Pokemon! =D
Most of the pokemon buyers are collectors. Alt arts are only 1 in 3 booster boxes. Buying boxes to get a few cards isn't worth the hassle and dealing with the bulk is obnoxious
Pokémon is my best performing asset
Just bought a case of CR for $500 last week
Crown royal awesome
I chase those psa 10 "Pokémon center" promos....stand up comedian Pikachu is baller as hell.
Once scarlet and violet sets start coming out sword and shield are just going to start going up. Evolving skies will be around $500 by next year
As much as I would love to see more of certain sets or products I understand overprinting kills too much of the value and makes it less desirable.
I like all those sets long term. Although I expect most of them to be reprinted.
I love your videos Rudy!
