- In a new interview with ‘Vulture,’ Mariah Carey opens up about her ‘extremely uncomfortable’ appearance on ‘The Ellen Degeneres Show’ back in 2008, when the TV personality tried to offset rumors that the singer was pregnant by having her drink champagne. The clip recently resurfaced on Twitter amidst an ongoing investigation of the show following allegations that it’s a ‘toxic’ workplace environment.

Disgusting. Ellen didn't care about Mariah she just wanted to be the first talk show to talk about a baby. Mariah clearly didn't want to talk about it. The worst part is that Mariah then had a miscarriage a week later. Not saying that Ellen caused it but if Ellen hadn't outed her pregnancy to the world Mariah would have been able to deal with the loss of her baby privately.

As someone who has struggled with infertility and miscarriage, I would have broken down right there on camera pregnant or not! Mariah Carey is soo strong to have stayed so calm and collected. I have a bigger respect for her then I had before❤️.

Maybe they thought Mariah was in on it or the simple fact that Ellen was making it into a joke. Or maybe they were uncomfortable also and laughed uncomfortably, nervous laughter. I don’t know but it was incredibly wrong of Ellen to do that, along with all the other things like this she does. No empathy.

Crowd mentality. They may have missed the meanness of the joke (it’s very subtle) and followed cues from everyone around them and the fact Mariah was still smiling.
Usually these shows are very scripted and fake. The audience is told when to clap, laugh, cheer or boo. So they were probably told to do so by the Ellen crew.
Of course the invasiveness and pressure is bad. But to me the phrase, “Lets toast/celebrate if you’re not pregnant” is soooo cringey and cruel! She couldn’t know what Mariah’s plans were at the time, or what she was going through, so that’s such a dangerously loaded thing to say. What if she’d just found out she couldn’t have children?

People aren't seeing how manipulative this actually was. She wanted an answer, and came up with a fool proof way to get an answer. And if Mariah actually went through and drank with Ellen to make it look like she isn't, she'd be found out later on anyway and get ousted for drinking while pregnant. We're blessed with one beautiful son, but can't conceive after an emergency hysterectomy at 30, people asking "Wy do you only have one child," or "You better hurry and have another before it's too late" are hurtful and something you should never ask a women. You never know the impact of that question. Also, sidenote what if Mariah Carey had an unknown issue with alcohol , that's unacceptable behavior on live TV especially.
I think it's unfair too. Like, people thought that I would be fun to hang out with until I told them that I cannot drink. I can be fun and not need alcohol to make me that way. I just take medications that would kill me if I add alcohol to the mix.

I've had a miscarriage and I know when/if I get pregnant again I'll be very careful about who and how much I tell. I know Ellen doesn't have kids and has never had or lost a pregnancy, but she knows how to talk about it. She should have asked Mariah backstage if she was willing to talk about it on air or when they planned her episode.
If she did this to me I hope I would have said something like "I am, but I clearly didn't want anyone to know until I knew we were in the clear. You had no right to take that from me. Move to the next segment and don't mention it again." so hopefully I could do some damage control and stop ber from pulling something like that again.

Imagine if someone is actively trying to be pregnant and just can't, and then somebody makes you do a toast on "Not being pregnant". That is so evil, like what do you know what is going on in their life ? You can't just make a toast like that. As a Radiology nurse, we can't do x-rays on pregnant women, and we have to ask them if they are or not, and the way we ask has to be extremly careful, you can't just ask in any way as it could trigger their sadness over the fact that they maybe want to be pregnant but just can't.
It makes me sad that she’s only trending (number one in the U.K.) for her down moments.
