Not saying you're doing this, but I've noticed that many reviewers seem somewhat bias against the Akai. It makes me wonder if the popularity of the Akai factors into that. I get it, it's always doper to have the less known item, especially if it is comparable or superior to the popular one. But, I don't want the cooler product, I want the better product. I would liken this situation to Bose. Audiophiles loathe Bose, they laugh at their product line and they make fun of their users. They claim the sound is boring, that it lacks personality. I was once told that Bose is too consistent. Ummm, what? But, in reality, they only dislike it because it's well-known. So, they will opt for more obscure options. I've played music my whole life, been around a lot of gear and other shit. Bose is a phenomenal brand. It is consistent, but I think it is robust. I get great bass from my Bose products. The highs are above average, the mids are perfect. The best feature?? DURABILITY. Anyway, do you think maybe you or others approach the Akai in the same way that audiophiles approach Bose Speakers? I love your vids, I'm a sub. Thank you.
Went from using the Akai mini to the Launchkey after I dropped my device on the floor. Couldn’t be happier with the change. The modulator is so much more practical on the Launchkey compared to the joystick of the Akai.
I LOVE how you also tell us about the flaws that you dislike about each of these. Many channels will just sugarcoat their reviews making it very hard to get an honest opinion on them. Thumbs up!
I think the sensitivity in the drum pads will depend on your style of music as well. Electronic music uses very loud and consistent beats, but if you play cinematic or orchestral percussion, every level of sensitivity counts because you want to have more control over the intensity (specially for risers and build ups).
I have been playing piano and guitar for many years but never into music recording or production. Your video of going to the cabin and showing what was in your bag and pulling out the Launchkey MINI along with this showing it has ARP, sold me. But for now being an amateur, GB works for me. Really appreciate a theme in your videos. What works for you. Launchkey Mini will be the one for me. What a great review. You've never hidden the fact that you're pro-launchkey, but you very fairly give the mpk its props with sincere reasoning behind them 👍 Can you tell me the instrument you were using to demonstrate? It was a lovely sound!
Happy this video came out! Glad I took the Launchkey at the end..you for sure were a big influence..maybe you could make some tutorials on how to make those dope stickers fit perfectly on your controllers hahah
I actually just purchased this same launchkey a couple days ago to try out a new midi prior to me even looking at any videos. Part of me making that purchase was because I experienced issues with the Akai Mini Mpk2 in the past as well as I was familiar with an older model launchkey that I used in school that I thoroughly enjoyed and got accustomed to using with both Logic and Ableton. Although I am not an Ableton user (only worked with it in school), seeing this video after my purchase gives me a lot on confidence in my choice of the Launchkey. Preciate it Taetro! Thank you for thoroughly comparing the two. 🙏🏾🫡
This is a great vid. I use Ableton but I still couldn't decide on Arturia Keylab Essential, Launchkey, or Oxygen Pro. I've wanted the essential for a while, but I've see a few people who've said the keys die after about a year and half. Think I'm gonna go with Launchkey. Thanks
This video helped me make my choice. Youve got really simple, informative content and you get straight to the point without trailing off. Hope you keep making videos on this stuff. Theres a lot of new diy people like me who could learn from these videos.
@@vitaag wow ten months ago! I ended up purchasing the Launchkey which really helped me out. I am currently using the Maschine mk3. Never thought I’d get this far. Thank you Taetro.
This is a very comprehensive comparison! Like you said in another video, it doesn't really matter what the tool is, as long as you are using it to make tunes... but both of these controllers are pretty amazing anyways. I have the Launchkey Mini - but I think i would have been pretty happy with the MPK Mini also really. (launchkey mini though is really made for Ableton live, which is my DAW so that's really why I got that)
I believe you can change the velocity curve with the software. But I love that the Launchkeys pads have velocity sensitivity. Launchpads don’t so this accompanying a Launchpad helps to get you the deep pad banks as well as you velocity sensitivity.
hey taetro.. just wanted to make a request not related to this. so i bought the launch key mini. So a mini controller is obviously different from a full sized one with smaller keys and just 25 keys. So playing it the traditional way is a bit hard. can you make a video on how to properly play mini controllers. eg finger positioning, building layers and all. its just a genuine thing cause if i try playing this the traditional way. my hands pain like anything. ps loving what you do btw!
I think you're supposed to use the small keyboard just to test sounds and set up settings in programs. I have a full size keyboard (launchkey 61) but now I want a small keyboard to have on my desk next to me as I test out sounds and using different programs. With the small keyboard you have to use the octave button to make it go up the keyboard or down so it's like a full size keyboard but you just have to use the octave buttons.
Even after 2 years, Its the best comparison video out there for these 2 devices. I bought the akai mpk. the simple reason is; I already have a full-size launchpad so I would always have enough pads for my drums.
@Taetro thank you for this comparison/review. I feel a lil bit of buyers remorse after purchasing the MPK Mini MK3... My #1 issue is the need to use the mpk midi editor software for the unit to sync BPM with your DAW etc.. Its painful having to set it up every time before starting your session. I am not an Abelton user so I didn't go with the Launchkey Mini BUT the fact that it has 16 pads and transport controls on such a small unit along with introductory Abelton software may get me to at least try it out. I currently am using the Akai Fire controller alongside the mpk mk3 to have transport and pads and keys... ugh
i feel like back when I bought my first MIDI controller keys (2006) that aftertouch was a big selling point and I checked to be certain that mine had it. TodayI don't see aftertouch on any of the portable controllers that I like. I just purchased the Akai mk3 and I think it should really have aftertouch. It's an important feature to me and probably to a lot of other creators.
@@rokogizdic3527 As far as I can tell all of the Launchkey models have it except for the mini mk3. The AKAI definitely doesn't have it. the budget class of controllers don't have it probably bc the keys are cheaply manufactured for the most part

With this video you managed to get me, after thinking about it for a long time, not to buy an Akai keyboard but instead a launch key because of the Ableton integration, which I won't get on an MPK. I just want to press the pad and then twist the individually assigned knobs. If you have a tip for me why I should buy a machine Micro instead of an MPC Studio, that would be great!!! At the end of this video I will buy one of these Edit: I bought the launchkey as an Ableton user. And anyway, it's a clear winner other than the endless encoders. Hopefully Novation adds that in mk4
@@fatfreddyscat85 here is a quick review, since I bought the Arturia. The encoders absolutely useless. They are by far the worst. When turning them nothing happens or maybe something happens but in jumps so you have no accuracy. Sometimes they even went the wrong way. I'm not joking. This is a common problem. They have made some improvements. But even after that, I would say the encoders are useless. Too bad, because everything else was amazing :(

Hi, I'm just starting wit MPK on Ableton and the infinite knobs are not taking the position of the knob in Ableton (as you say at 7:30). What am I missing? Cheers
Thank you for this very thorough product comparison, for me it comes down to whether I want to go with Ableton DAW software. I'm an eLearning content developer and instructional designer so I am looking at how I can make my own background music and sound effects. I have to be super careful with not breaking copyrights when it comes to music and graphics. Another reason I also created my own illustration software.
Is your own Illustration software better than Inkscape or Krita(both free and open source)? Regarding music, you should try LMMS or MPC Beats, from Akaipro site.
I love the proper MPC style pads on the MPK MINI and the endless encoders, plus the joystick is perfect for my playing skill. I like to be able to adjust both at the same time, I got used to this with Roland keyboards... So I would simply add a LAUNCHPAD MINI MK3 to it and have all worlds. I'll then have MPC style pads for natural drumming and the LAUNCHPAD pads for triggering clips and recording, muting, soloing, etc, and then to play the more solid drum that doesn't require natural velocity. I then also get the transport buttons, but also endless encoders. This opinion is based on my liking for the MPC pads, and by the looks of it, I should be able to get CORX upgrades on the pads from MPCSTUFF to make then ultra-responsive and get those perfectly off-beat beats without them becoming offbeat offbeat beats lol... then meaning you have to do a 50% quantize to get it back close to the way you actually play it. Which is only import for boom-bap or lofi... but is necessary for odd percussion that can be used in any genre. Thanks for the vid!!!! If you use Ableton and only have enough for one thing, then the LAUNCHKEY MINI is the obvious choice. The thing I would miss about the pitch and mod wheel on LUANCHKEY mini is the fact you can put your finger directly at the value you want... you don't have to pull a wheel down... this can make it great for some precise automation creativity. If these companies could just include everything, that would be great
Hello Liam, I'm interested in the setup of MPK + Launchpad. from what I understood Launchpad mini doesn't give the possibility to record arm specific tracks in ableton, only mute-solo-stop them... Say for instance I have a Project with 8 midi tracks each with their macro knobs. Is it possible with the MPK+ Launchpad to press a couple of buttons on the launchpad and have full access to one of the midi tracks on the MPK?
@Taetro Out of all the controllers you've used, what's your personal favorite small midi controller? I'd also be interested in vs Arturia Minilab mkii. Thanks!
VERY helpful! Two questions. Does one model work better with Cakewalk by Bandlab? And does Launchkey have full velocity control like the Akai model has?
hi Taetro. I am still torn between these 2. I was going to purchase Akai after you suggested in another video "if you are not decided on DAW, just get Akai MPK". But now after doing more research I am leaning towards LAUNCHKEY MINI, as I dont mind learning Ableton. One question. does Launchkey have the function of how u make drum pads have the same bass level no matter how hard you press it? You mentioned Akai has this in this video, but didnt say nothing about Launchkey. Thanks!
Is the novation worth getting if i dont use ableton? Considering both of these and am leaning more towards the novation, but if its only worth it in conjunction with ableton then ill get the akai
I've just ordered NOVATION LAUNCHKEY MINI mk3, I wanted Akai mk3 for a long time, the decision was pretty spontaneous. I really love making beats and genres like dubstep, dnb etc. And for me 8 drum pads would be not enough, 16 pads on launchkey would be better, because I like using also toms, crashes, ride, open/closed hihats, kick and snare of course also. This is one of the main reasons. Second - I like mod/pitch controls more in launchkey, they are more precise(but to be honest I didn't used them before a lot, but maybe I will, as a beginner with a not a lot of experience) Third - launchkey has transport control(play, record) and maybe I will find it really useful, judging from TAETRO's words. Also I use Ableton now(trial) and better integration, I think, is also a plus( but maybe I will stay with Ableton or go to Bitwig, I liked it also for it's, might be funny, ability to use "redo" normally(Ctrl+Shift+Z), which is for some reason is not available on ableton ) About knobs, I didn't really used them much, so it's not so important to me right now, I think restricted ones on launchpad should also do the job.

Can you use a midi controller and just an iPad Pro. Or do I need a desktop as well.
Thanks for the info about with the Loop! Novation Launchkey
What is the microphone arm you are using? Looks very good. I am Japanese. I'm sorry if the text is strange.
Novation fan here 💪 I love my Launchkey mini mk3 🥳🥳 and my Launchpad X 👍
so for beginner which one would you suggest?
Good morning Boss good looking out with the lesson thanks stay blessed
Do u have a detailed tutorial of using Launchkey and Ableton for beginners?
I'm just gonna wait for Arthuria Minilab Mk3
@Taetro Out of all the controllers you've used, what's your personal favorite small midi controller?
I'd also be interested in vs Arturia Minilab mkii. Thanks!
Long awaited comparison is here!!
heck yeahhh
Awesome vid, thanks Taetro! :) I think it's time for me to get rid of my old Arturia minilab and go for the Launchkey.
This channel is very helpful, many thanks!
Thanks man!
Was waiting for this so much!
hope you enjoy!
@@Taetro yes I will!
lemme buy it first!
Most probably Launchkey is outta stocks!
VERY helpful! Two questions. Does one model work better with Cakewalk by Bandlab? And does Launchkey have full velocity control like the Akai model has?
Love this man you inspired me greatly thank you so much
PS love the name taetro for life
Which one is more “plug and play friendly” with FL studio 20?
same, that last point will probably confirm my decision xD
AllGoodRonny both
Thanks!
Great video thanks for your clear explanations
Hello, at 8:49 how could I get that sound? Thank You
Is the novation worth getting if i dont use ableton? Considering both of these and am leaning more towards the novation, but if its only worth it in conjunction with ableton then ill get the akai
Same here
Nice vid always love your comparisons👍🏻
how did you personalise the launchkey pretty cool
great vid, seems like a great humble guy. subbed :)
Which one is your go to mini when recording, writing etc...
Second - I like mod/pitch controls more in launchkey, they are more precise(but to be honest I didn't used them before a lot, but maybe I will, as a beginner with a not a lot of experience)
Third - launchkey has transport control(play, record) and maybe I will find it really useful, judging from TAETRO's words. Also I use Ableton now(trial) and better integration, I think, is also a plus( but maybe I will stay with Ableton or go to Bitwig, I liked it also for it's, might be funny, ability to use "redo" normally(Ctrl+Shift+Z), which is for some reason is not available on ableton )
About knobs, I didn't really used them much, so it's not so important to me right now, I think restricted ones on launchpad should also do the job.
Excellent review! Very informative! What mic are you using in this video?
can you jump forward >> and backward
What pluging you’re using in this video? It sounds so good. (The virtual instrument I mean just to be clear)
Oh my god. It's been 3 months and no response. I NEED to find out myself. :(
I'd also like to know :)
@@FOGoticus did u find anything
@@MTCypher Sadly nope....
great video as always
I really think that the arturia is way better but I really like the pads of the Akai, I'm stock. For looping live wich one is the best ?
That segue into the title card / logo was great.
haha thank you!!
As a new creator this vids are very helpful man, thanks!
appreciate you! thanks for watching :)
Is there a “rate” button for the pads on the Novation?
I’m getting the Novation Launchkey Mk3 mai la because of the pads and the integration with ableton live
which of these two have the best synchronization with Fl studio?
what app are you using for launchkey mini
