Command hooks are very handy for storing long necklaces. Some closets have built-in hooks, too, which makes it easy to keep any expensive items out of sight.
Hey as someone who just graduated from college, and was an RA, here's two other thoughts: School Supplies -- index cards. Seriously make flash cards for studying! Also DON'T bring candles!!!!! I pretty much guarantee that they're not allowed. Bring reed diffusers -- they're cheap (try Marshall's/Target/TJ Maxx/HomeGoods), make the room smell good, and are another cute thing to add to the room :) (and/or a plug-in air freshner, but they can take up a precious outlet.)
something to keep in mind too is things to make you feel at home! for me, i go to college hours and hours away from where i live and the seasons are different. i missed silly things like in the fall when my mom would bake pie or our neighbors would give us pumpkin bread. so i got REALLY into buying scented products (candles, lotions, hand sanitizers) from places like bath and body works that would remind me of that.
Your school may have free printing in the library or the computer lab. If not, they may charge per print-out. Buying your own printer is handy because you will not have to go to the library every time you need to print. It's really a personal preference, but ask someone who goes to the school if printing is free or if it costs each time you print.
I leave for college in 21 days and this video really calmed my nerves about what to bring. This definitely helped me figure out what I am packing and I also went and downloaded the checklist app, and it is awesome!
Hey I'm just starting to watch TH-cam blogs, and I'm loving yours! I'm a senior in high school, with just two months left of school. Its going by so fast! It's been great getting to watch videos about how to be prepared for college, I was so nervous about all this stuff till I started watching videos on TH-cam, and yours and others have helped me so much, and now I can't wait!!
Yeah, if you think you are going to be writing a lot of papers and printing hand outs for different classes. I had one and it was awesome! It was very convenient and easier than running to different buildings with my flash drive to print stuff off.
At the beginning of the school year, when you don't have much work, keep your door open, have food, play music! Make your room look inviting, and people will wander in looking to hang out or make friends
I play softball, and I got noticed through tournaments. I met my college coach through my high school coach and he saw me play in clinics. It's all about putting yourself out there and making the connections! ;)
hey I'm 13 and I just wanted to tell you that I've watched a lot of your college videos and even though I'm not in high school yet it fells like you've been so helpful! haha it's just kinda nice to know what to expect in college. thanks for the videos :)
if you can't make it to a campus visit they usually have a "campus tour" on the school's website. Sometime's they'll have picture of the dorms. It's usually under "life on campus" or "housing"
I personally never lived in a dorm, but one thing I've heard from multiple people is to make sure you have a bag that won't get all gross to put all your shower stuff in if you need to transport it, and maybe include a really cheap pair of flip flops. You never know if the floor of the showers will be all gross or not.
it's extremely easy now because of cell phones, email and skype. imagine in the 80's when you went to college, you'd probably only call home once a month or something. it's extremely easy to keep in touch with your family in college but it's really up to the person in college on how often they want to contact their family.
Yes, because the cost adds if u print from the library so frequently and its time consuming to walk down there and/or wait for an available printer. Its more luxourious to bring one.
definitely only bring one shampoo/conditioner at a time! most schools have a little pharmacy/drugstore right on campus where you can pick up prescriptions and buy shampoo and that kind of stuff. also lots of people would take the city bus to the mall/grocery store that was only like a 5 minute ride away and buy all of their groceries/toiletries etc. there and then take the bus back to the dorms.
OH! Sorry haha but another thought! SCRAPBOOK PAPER FOR THE WALLS!! I did this to my room this past year and it was SOOO CUTE (I don't really like posters, but needed to cover the walls)! Go to a craft store and get sheets that match your other decor (bedspread, etc.). You might even find a pack of paper that's coordinated, rather than just individual sheets. There's a lot of scrapbook paper that has patterns, glitter, and are really adorable. Cheap way to add color to the walls :))
I'm a 15 year old girl from Germany and I just watched both parts.. Its 1.33 at night and I'm never going to go to college bc the system in Germany is a little bit different than in America.. But I love listening to you and hearing about all the experiences in your freshman year :) -3
Definitely bring a notebook, a planner, and your pen. For the most part, you will not have to bring your textbook(s). Professors may not even assign work in the textbook(s) for the first week or two. Don't bring your laptop on the first day as your professor may not allow laptops in his/her lecture.
My university is $47,000 dollars a year with room and board. And that is before books. But it really varies depending on the school. I know people who are getting their education very "cheap" for 20,000 a year. And if you go to a 2 year school ("community college") it is way way less expensive.
This is going to sound totally random, but my parents had me bring a tool kit, AND IM SO GLAD. At my school you have the option to loft your beds, but you have to assemble the loft yourself. I was the only person on my floor who had a hammer and screw driver and stuff. We actually ended up using the screw driver a lot during the year to fix a few things we had too! And I don't know if you mentioned lamps, but the lighting in my dorm was AWFUL. Hahaha.
I was really hoping you would go into detail about the practical amount of makeup and clothes you should bring. Could you please comment back or possibly do another video on it?
I know you got a ton of hate for it, but I know a lot of people would find it so helpful and comforting if you put your video about sororities back up :( I'm scared for rush and I'd love the advice!
Painter's tape works well to hang up posters and of course it doesn't rip of the paint because it is made not too. Ps these are really helpful. Thanks a lot Meghan =)
make sure when decorating you check your schools policies and what they dont allow. i know that my school doesnt allow christmas lights so just make sure :)
My freshman year I got the one room on campus with a wall of cork board. (just one). I think they all used to be like that (my dorm building was over 100 years old that year) and for some reason mine was the only one that they never changed.
could you do a dr. meghan "young temptations" video? like where you talk about the dangerous temptations (for instance, drugs, boys, partying, academics) of being young and naiive in high school and college?
awesome video, the only thing i would be careful about is command hooks, i had them in my dorm room and they ripped the paint off when i took them off the walls lol they're effective but a little tricky to get off of cheaply painted walls so it might be a good idea to practise using them beforehand :)
im only 13 but i already cant wait to go to college!!! i got to go down to my sisters college andstay with her for like 5 days and i loved it im so excited and i want my last year in middle school to be over and just want to skip right threw high school i hate the thought of having to wait. but i love your videos and i cant wait and you give really good tips:)
omg this could not have come at a better time! im getting ready for college right now (i leave in 2 weeks) and this really helped :) thanks dr. meghan!
my dorm isnt allowed to have christmas lights, and i guess it's something new since that was one of the number one causes of fires last year in dorms (yikes!) so definitely make sure you check with your school before buying any!!
I'm a senior in college (How the hell did that happenen) I called my freshman year roomate after watching this, I miss dorm, orientation, rush stuff so much! Enjoy every second, soon you'll be old like me and missing all of the "fun" stuff :)
I LOVE your college advice! please please make a job interview/job advice video if you do have a job experience (like what to wear on a job interview and stuff) :) that would be extremely helpful!
some books can be downloaded as torrents for free,i know it shouldnt be done but if you have no money to buy a book sometimes its better than no book at all
No i mean can you tell us tips on organizing your schedule, what you did etc. i.e. the choice to have no classes on tuesday or only classes at night...etc
I think buying used textbooks or renting them is becoming a thing of the past. Many books now have an access card that I believe is a digital copy of the book-someone correct me if I"m wrong- but the access card is single use so can't be resold or reused.
So... You just saved my life. I'm graduating in 6 days, and I've barely thought about dorm stuff. So I thank you immensely.
Command hooks are very handy for storing long necklaces. Some closets have built-in hooks, too, which makes it easy to keep any expensive items out of sight.
omg please never delete this video because when i go to college i do NOT want to forget this!!!
these videos are literally such lifesavers! I'm leaving for school in three weeks, and these have helped SO much!
I think you just broke your record of fast-talking! Aaaaand I LOVE IT!

I haven't even started my senior year of High School yet, but I've already made my college packing checklist and this has been really helpful!

I feel so relived that I fell upon these video's! I'm going to college in August and I didn't know where to start thank you!
I play softball, and I got noticed through tournaments. I met my college coach through my high school coach and he saw me play in clinics. It's all about putting yourself out there and making the connections! ;)

I'm only 14 but I seriously get so excited when u make a new dr. Meghan video
im leaving for my freshman year in 22 days and just rewatched all your college advice videos! so helpful :)
I personally never lived in a dorm, but one thing I've heard from multiple people is to make sure you have a bag that won't get all gross to put all your shower stuff in if you need to transport it, and maybe include a really cheap pair of flip flops. I am 11 in middle school and im OBSESSED with watching college videos

If you do have to use tape, you can use painter's tape. That doesn't damage the wall.

Could you do a video about studying tips/ finding the balance between having fun and getting serious with school work?
Definitely bring a notebook, a planner, and your pen. For the most part, you will not have to bring your textbook(s). Professors may not even assign work in the textbook(s) for the first week or two. You talk so fast haha but such good advice!
omigosh is that a tide to-go pen in the background??? THAT THING SAVED MY BUTT SO MANY TIMES. Best thing ever.
can you talk more about how you'll be decorating your college apartment? I'm moving in mine in 2 weeks and would love to see your ideas!
college seemed SO scary but thanks to this series, it seems way easier. thanks so much :)
I was really hoping you would go into detail about the practical amount of makeup and clothes you should bring. Could you please comment back or possibly do another video on it?
I'm 13 and I watched this video because your personality makes me happy and im going to a music camp where we are staying in dorms :)
I know you got a ton of hate for it, but I know a lot of people would find it so helpful and comforting if you put your video about sororities back up :( I'm scared for rush and I'd love the advice!
my junior year is only almost over but i've been watching your old college videos because i've been itching to leave
Im Australian and we dont even have college here, and I have still watched all and every Dr Meghan college advice video haha.
i'm not going to college yet, but i still love your Dr. Meghan videos
Painter's tape works well to hang up posters and of course it doesn't rip of the paint because it is made not too.
Ps these are really helpful. Thanks a lot Meghan =)

Just go for a campus visit and they'll show all the dorm styles you wanna see. At least at my school they did that.
YOURE MAKING ME SO EXCITED FOR COLLEGE! i love you meghan! You really inspire me alot!
awesome video, the only thing i would be careful about is command hooks, i had them in my dorm room and they ripped the paint off when i took them off the walls lol they're effective but a little tricky to get off of cheaply painted walls so it might be a good idea to practise using them beforehand :)
These videos are SO helpful! I'm going to college in fall and these make me feel so prepared. Thanks! :)
These are so helpful because I go to college August 20th and I was so worried if I was bringing the right stuff.
If you want to put up posters you can use sticky tacks c: Its like a gum/putty you put on the walls.
I'm not even going to uni but I just love watching your dr Meghan videos!x
I wish I would have known about slugbooks when I started college, now that Im starting grad school it would have saved me tons of money!!
Can you do a dr.meghan video about writing college essays, like how long to make them, what to include, stuff like that.
im only 13 but i already cant wait to go to college!!! i got to go down to my sisters college andstay with her for like 5 days and i loved it im so excited and i want my last year in middle school to be over and just want to skip right threw high school i hate the thought of having to wait. but i love your videos and i cant wait and you give really good tips:)
Depends on where you go, it could be just about $100 per semester all the way to about $15,000 per semester.
I live in Iceland and I am currently in university and i live at home but I love watching these
Can you make a video on like little things to remember for college? Like what to put in your shower caddy...Things for your desk etc.etc..?
omg this could not have come at a better time! im getting ready for college right now (i leave in 2 weeks) and this really helped :) thanks dr. meghan!
I use poster puddy for my room! It looks like gum but its not! It doesnt peel off the paint! :)
my dorm isnt allowed to have christmas lights, and i guess it's something new since that was one of the number one causes of fires last year in dorms (yikes!) so definitely make sure you check with your school before buying any!!
this is SO SO helpful! I'm heading to college in the middle of august, and this makes me feel more prepared! thanks meghan! :)
I'd be careful with Command Hooks though because my dorm actually prefers tacks/small screws. We are not allowed Command Hooks
some books can be downloaded as torrents for free,i know it shouldnt be done but if you have no money to buy a book sometimes its better than no book at all
I'm 13 and watching these just because they are entertaining and will probably help me in the future! :)
This may seem out of topic, but could you do healthy snacks for school, college etc, it will really help!
I'm almost 14 and I love these videos and I follow all of ur awesome advice.. KEEP ROCKING!!!!
Do a video about social life of college... getting into organizations/greek life!
Thank you so much for these videos! I'm moving into college in about a week! So excited but also nervous!

No i mean can you tell us tips on organizing your schedule, what you did etc. i.e. the choice to have no classes on tuesday or only classes at night...etc
At my school, you can rent text books for a semester, which is honestly the best thing ever
my comforter that i got for my dorm is supposed to come in the mail tomorrow!!! I'm so excited!
its from target
I think she means about classes, how you organized for your classes(backpack, binder etc..) If not, then nevermind.
The same thing happened to me with textbooks! It was incredibly frustrating having them insist that all of my textbooks had arrived when they hadn't!
Great video Meghan! I am 13 but I watched both parts till the end!! Absalutely love your videos ❤
Do a video on how you dressed in college and how to dress nice for school

Meghan! Omg ur meetup in san fran is next weekend!!!! Ladddddy I'm not going to be there!!!!!! Oh my goodness and I've been requesting this forever!
I think buying used textbooks or renting them is becoming a thing of the past. Many books now have an access card that I believe is a digital copy of the book-someone correct me if I"m wrong- but the access card is single use so can't be resold or reused.
at my school they let you use painters tape to hang things up too :D
Can you please make a video of all the beauty products/ toiletries that you brought freshman year?
